Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Community Thanksgiving Dinner Has Something For Everyone

Fall is in the air and we’re putting out the call for volunteers for the 20th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. We welcome veterans of Thanksgivings past and brand new volunteers.

We need lots of volunteer pie bakers this year. You can bring a homemade pie or a store-bought pie for our dessert table. Bring your pie to the Mullis Center on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day or when you come to the dinner on Thanksgiving day.

We still need volunteers to roast one of the pre-seasoned, oven-ready turkeys, to be served on Thanksgiving Day. You pick it up at the Mullis Center on Wednesday between 3PM and 6PM and put it in the oven at your home on Thanksgiving Day to bring hot and ready to serve at the dinner. There’s even a note attached with the weight of the turkey and recommended cooking time.

As for the jobs on Thanksgiving Day, we have a variety of things that need doing from dishwashing to serving pie.  The shifts are 1 hour so you are limited only by how much time you want to spend helping or dining on Thanksgiving Day.  Some people come in for an hour or two and some come for the whole day. It is basically organized chaos but lots of fun. Continue Reading

Lumi Verdugo – Clay speaks to me

Posted November 1, 2018 at 5:50 am by

Verdugo’s Jail – Contributed photo

The body of work of almost 56 years expresses Lumi’s joy in experimenting with glazes, firing and Raku pottery. At the exhibition Lumi Verdugo: Of My Hands 1962-2018 now at the San Juan Islands Museum of Art (SJIMA) visitors can discover the varied faces of clay works, including the use of local island clay.

When in her exhibit, most experience a sense of peace and calm and respite from busy lives, exactly as Verdugo intended.

Educated in Chile and having taught at Lakeside School in Seattle, Verdugo has made Friday Harbor home since 2001. She has built her dream studio and creates a wide range of drawings and ceramics.

Upstairs, in the workshop area, a film of Verdugo’s talk opening the exhibition explains the use of heat, smoke and firing in fascinating detail. The tape runs in a loop, so you can walk in at any time and catch the presentation.

Prevention Survey

Posted November 1, 2018 at 5:42 am by

The Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative (CPWI) Community Survey is an anonymous annual statewide survey administered by all of the CPWI coalitions in Washington state. The Community Survey captures our local San Juan Island attitudes about teen alcohol and drug use, as well as prevention programming. This data helps to inform our coalition’s strategies, as well as the state strategies.

This is an annual requirement for our San Juan Island Prevention Coalition funding, but more importantly, knowing the opinion of our community helps us to make informed decisions, and to help us better communicate the prevention work to the community.

County Seeks Participation Updating HSTP

Posted November 1, 2018 at 5:38 am by

Over the next two months, San Juan County Health & Community Services is undertaking a process to update its Coordinated Human Services Transportation Plan (HSTP) originally created in 2010 and then updated in 2014.

The HSTP was developed to address the transportation needs of the elderly, people with disabilities, and low income populations in accordance with the criteria of the Washington State Department of Transportation. Following the creation of this plan, San Juan County has coordinated and developed innovative community transportation programs to meet the needs of our geographically isolated rural County, the most successful of which has been the Transportation Voucher Program.

One component of updating the plan is gathering community input. There are two ways to participate and provide your input and experience with specialized transportation in San Juan County. The first way is to take our community survey by clicking the following link: Continue Reading
