SJI Community Foundation

Here’s a note from Susan Matthews, Executive Director of the San Juan Island Community Foundation…

sjicf-logoWere you at the County Fair this year?

If so, you probably saw the Community Foundation’s booth inside the main building where we posted pictures of some islanders you may have recognized. Each person was quoted as saying something like: “I work here… and I give here” – or “This is our home… and we give here” – or “My business is here… and I give here”.

These people, and so many more just like them, are the heart and soul of your Community Foundation. Our vision statement says, in part, that we strive to “provide donors a focused approach to giving, empowering them to get involved with the causes they support and to have a more significant impact on their community.” Kind of a high-falutin’ way of saying: We help you share your good fortune and good will with others less fortunate – or support causes that maintain or improve the quality of our special island life.

To make sure our guidance to donors and volunteers is accurate, effective, and up-to-date, we recently undertook a three-month intensive study of community needs.

We didn’t do this by ourselves. Through a series of both public communications and personal invitations, we encouraged representatives of island organizations, non-profits, government, and individual members of the broad island community to become involved. That resulted in 128 islanders volunteering their time to attend several of the 28 total meetings addressing 8 different areas of concern. The goal was to identify the most pressing needs and, as a diverse yet cohesive group of community members, develop strategies to meet those needs.

OK, that’s done. So, what now? Continue Reading

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor

Last week the County Council announced that they will not be putting the proposed greenhouse regulations on the Council agenda. While it doesn’t mean the Council has dropped the issue for good, this is still good news. I choose to see it as an indication that the Council listened to islanders’ concerns about over-regulation without proof of substantive problems. For this, I thank the Council.

While the debate around the issue was contentious, I believe it was useful for shedding light on a host of local agricultural issues. For one, more people are now aware that the County has Right to Farm provisions (Land Use 18.30.050) currently on the books, and more now recognize that farm diversification, greenhouses and other contemporary farming tools are necessary for extending the growing season and making farms viable.

Isn’t it high-time to reconsider the importance of saving farms and supporting farmers? These issues are critical to many; to our hardworking farmers, but also to consumers, open-space advocates, environmental sustainability, food security, and preserving the rural character of the San Juans. Let’s continue to watch for and support local compliance with Right to Farm laws, and preserving farmland priorities in our community.

Mayor appoints Small as youth representative on arts commission. One position remains open.

Mayor Carrie Lacher is pleased to announce the appointment of Fiona Small to the Friday Harbor Arts Commission (FHAC). Small, a recent graduate of Spring Street International School, was selected to fill the youth representative position on the commission. She brings experience in performing arts, fine arts, photography, and writing.

“This position is an opportunity to introduce the next generation to public service, as well as to inject a youthful perspective into the public art process,” said Mayor Lacher. The youth commissioner serves a one-year term as a contributing but non-voting member of the commission.

The FHAC continues to seek one individual to complete a commission term ending December 31, 2015. This is a voting position. Applicants may choose to include examples of their art or experience.

Application review will continue until the position is filled. For specifics on the responsibilities of the commission, applicants are advised to review the ordinance and policies posted under “Arts Commission” in the Agenda tab at the Town of Friday Harbor web site: www.fridayharbor.org.

Deriving his inspirations from organic forms, Tom’s works soar in their spaces and speak in quiet tones. Having worked in stone, wood and cast glass, he allows each particular medium to have a unique presence.

Tom’s juxtapositions of glass and basalt, water and granite, wood and gold speak with the confidence of form that we know as distinctly Tom Small.

The gallery will have approximately 15 new pieces, indoor and outdoor piece, wood, stone, steel, glass… large and small!

And yes there will be an opening reception on Saturday, October 3, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Please join us. The show runs October 3rd through 24th.

ICOM Public Safety Dispatch Interconnect

Posted October 1, 2015 at 5:48 am by

County-LogoThe San Juan County Sheriff’s Department and County Council will celebrate a new level of security for County residents as it completes the Sheriff’s dispatch center’s connection with the Island County Emergency Services Command Center (ICOM). With the completion of extensive equipment and communication systems updates the two systems will be completely compatible and capable of backing each other up on a moment’s notice.

“Should we have a communications or equipment failure in our dispatch center, calls can instantly be routed to ICOM and their personnel will be able to temporarily dispatch fire, emergency medical and law enforcement resources seamlessly,” said Sheriff Ron Krebs.

System updates were begun in the San Juan County Enhanced 911 dispatch center in late 2013, after the Sheriff’s office received a grant to replace obsolete equipment. The program was expanded when the failure of a CenturyLink underwater cable showed the vulnerability of both the 911 dispatch and government telecommunications systems.

“We saw it as absolutely as a life safety issue and made it a budget priority,” said County Council Chair Bob Jarman. Continue Reading

FARM-PARADE-2015-banner

Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade, Chili Cook-Off And Seed Program, this Saturday, October 3rd.

Fall has arrived and the Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade is just around the corner! The fifth annual parade will leave the Fairgrounds at 2:30 PM on October third, turn down Argyle and Spring Streets and head toward the Farmers Market at Brickworks.

Past parades have featured horses, farm trucks, goats and calves on leash, chickens in wagons, tractors, rolling bamboo groves, and plenty of just plain supporters of local food and farms.

This year’s parade theme is “Let my People Grow!” According to Roger Ellison, parade organizer, “Farmers and gardeners are fired up. I expect to see some rolling greenhouses, scarecrows, and pitchforks in the parade this year.”

Follow the parade to Brickworks for the Chili Cook-Off, which starts at 4:00 PM and features live music, fresh-pressed cider and of course some really good chili. For dessert, members of San Juan Island Grange #966 will be selling pies to raise money for a new deck at the Grange Hall.

Cap your day off with a 7:00 PM showing of the film Seeds of Time, presented by the Tragedy of the Commons Documentary Series, at the San Juan Island Grange Hall. Thor Hanson will be there with his book The Triumph of Seeds, and the Grange will be showing off its 2016 Seed Project and selling more pies.
