Dick Wade “passes the torch” to Eric Fusare for the very successful carpet & upholstery cleaning business – Tim Dustrude photo

The time has actually gone by pretty quickly” Dick Wade said as he reflected on the last 22 years that he and his wife Mary have owned and operated Windjammer Janitorial. But effective on July 1st, ownership has now passed to Eric and Nancy Fusare.

Dick and Mary bought the company from Glen Gullickson who founded it back in 1980, and there are still current customers today who were some of Glen’s originals back then. “It’s been a great business and we’ve had customers for our entire 22 years, and even become good friends with some of them” he said. “We want to thank everyone for all their support over the years, and we want to make sure no one is taken by surprise by this change. In Eric, I think we’ve found someone with the same work ethic and dedication to customer service which will ensure a smooth transition for everyone.

They will hang on to the janitorial side of the business – Eric and Nancy are only taking the Carpet and Upholstery side.

Eric has been an island resident for 25 years and as you probably already know, has worked at Marketplace grocery store for the last 20. He recently took some classes and completed a certification for professional carpet cleaning, so your carpet will be in good hands. The name of the business will change from “Windjammer Janitorial” to “Windjammer Carpet Cleaning”, but other than that, not much else will change. The phone number will still be 378-4902.

Asked what is next, Dick said “I’m gonna trade in my carpet wand for maybe a golf club or a fishing pole.

Friday Harbor 4th of July Parade - Tamara Weaver photo

Friday Harbor 4th of July Parade – Tamara Weaver photo

Minnie Knych asked if I would share this with you about Flag Etiquette for the parade…

According to United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1, Section 9:
“When the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Citizens of other countries present should stand at attention. All such conduct toward the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes.”

Friday Harbor’s movie theater is 100 years old this year – Tim Dustrude photo

In light of the theme of this year’s July 4th parade being “Hooray For Hollywood”, it is a treat to share this story with you…

by Scott Rasmussen, Special to the Update

The movie house built by Peter Kirk 100 years ago in the heart of town remains a top draw for entertainment largely because the man who’s owned it for the last three-decades-plus knows his limitations.

Aaron King and Jerry Alhadeff - Scott Rasmussen photo

Aaron King and Jerry Alhadeff – Scott Rasmussen photo

More to the point, Jerry Alhadeff has made a winning formula out of partnering with others whose artistic sensibilities are (how should we say?) more “well-rounded”and relying on them to pick the films, run the show and keep him in the loop.

Though not a silent partner by any means (he’s a stickler about maintenance), he knows where his strengths lie. He’s also gotta’ thing for Hershey Bars, but that’s another story.

My kind of film would be James Bond,” Alhadeff said. “If it were up to me I’d probably run one everyday. But I don’t think that would go over very well.

No, probably not. But he gets that. And, thank you, Aaron King.

The 4th of July spotlight will shine brightly this year on the Palace Theater, the name that Kirk’s 100-year-old movie house goes by today, as Friday Harbor honors the 100th anniversary of the Spring Street theater in its annual Independence Day parade. In tribute to the venerable cinematic showcase, which years ago doubled as a performing arts center as well, the theme of the 2015 parade is dubbed, “Hooray for Hollywood.

As the parade’s grand marshal, Alhadeff will be in the lead of that always lively, colorful, quirky procession. But he’s quick to credit the contributions of others in helping the theater weather the ups and downs of the entertainment industry and roll with the changes (the Palace jettisoned film reels and went digital about four years ago).

Featuring “first-run” films 365 days a year on either of two screens, the movie house, which boasts a 9-seat private viewing box as well, is what it is today in large part because of the magnetism, tenacity and “vision” one person in particular, Alhadeff said, the late Ray Kinnaman. Grateful-Dead-50-Tanglewood

Don’t forget – this music festival is happening this weekend…

Over the July 4th weekend, there will be live music and a local simulcast of the Grateful Dead’s 50th Anniversary performance from Chicago. The core 4 remaining members of the band have adamantly stated this is the last time they will ever play together as “The Grateful Dead.” Many of us tried every possible avenue other than $10,000 scalper prices to get tickets to these shows with no success, so we decided the next best thing would be to enjoy the shows together in a welcoming and beautiful setting.

Although we are asking for donations to cover expenses (porta-potties, garbage, propane, etc), we are looking to donate any proceeds above that to a local cause. We are leaning towards the Family Resource Center and their program for assisting chemotherapy treatment patients with ferry fares.

There isn’t a definite schedule yet, but we do have 4 bands booked at this point (all playing for free), with other artists on standby. We are looking to create a Grateful Dead Tour experience with adjacent camping and “Shakedown Street” parking lot atmosphere for all 3 days.

Edith Virginia Dickinson

Edith Dickenson

Edith Dickenson

Edith Virginia Dickinson passed away on June 29, 2015 at Ashley Gardens of Mount Vernon. Edith was born on the farm in Welcome, Minnesota to Temple and Eloise Goetz on January 31, 1927. After finishing high school, she attended Hamline University where she earned her teaching degree. She began teaching English and Art classes in Idaho and then took a job as an administrative leader with the Girl Scouts of America, which brought her to Washington State. There, through mutual friends, she met John W. Dickinson and they began their relationship while skiing on Snoqualmie Pass after he helped her up from a fall.

They lived on a house boat on Lake Union and always dreamed of living in the San Juan Islands. They were married on Orcas Island and moved to Friday Harbor in 1958 to their home on Argyle Avenue, where they raised their 3 daughters and Edith started her fabulous garden.

Edith loved serving her community and soon became involved in Girl Scouts, Blue Birds, the PTA, served on the school board, she was elected to the Friday Harbor Town Council, wrote columns for the Island’s Sounder, belonged to the Historical Society and local gardening clubs and groups. She and John welcomed friends into their home for sing-a-longs, cider pressing parties, and gatherings.

Edith was quick to share her garden vegetables, flowers and apples with anyone. People dropped by often looking for flowers they needed for weddings or special occasions, and it gave her such pride to provide whatever she could to help them out. Edith would want to be remembered for her expert knowledge, wisdom, and advice in caring for all growing things, especially her roses. And, if you are ever in need of good gardening advice, it would give Edith a chuckle if you said to yourself “What would Edith do?

Edith was preceded in death by her father Temple Goetz, her mother, Eloise, ,her husband John Dickinson, and her sister Barbara Ekern. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Dickinson, Sally (Brett) Rogers Susan (Paul) Noste, and grandchildren Chelsea Rogers, Jesse Rogers, Emily (Kyle) Hart and Molly Noste.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 29,2015 at the San Juan County Fairgrounds in Friday Harbor from 1 to 3 pm. Memorials may be made to: San Juan Historical Museum, Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor, or an Island charity of your choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of Edith, please sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com.

Bikers 4 Orcas San Juan Island Poker Run

John Wickham shares this recap of last week’s motorcycle event here on the island…

Sunday, June 28, 30 motorcyclists headed out from the Masons Lodge in Friday Harbor on a Poker Run across the island as part of the worldwide Bikers 4 Orcas Ultimate Ride To Freedom. This is the second year of the global event, raising awareness of wild orcas in captivity, and raising funds to help return them to the sea.

It was the first event here in the islands. Since L-Pod’s Tokitae, known to the world as Lolita, remains in an oversized bathtub at Miami’s Seaquarium for the 44th consecutive year, it was only fitting to ride here, and donate the proceeds to OrcaNetwork, as it continues to work for Tokitae’s release and return to L-Pod and the Salish Sea.

Riders came from as far away as Morro Bay, California. A sumptuous breakfast was put on by the Masons, then the riders headed out, without directions, to get a card at each of 5 stations for their poker hand: South Beach, False Bay, Pelindaba Lavender Farm, Roche Harbor, and San Juan Island Distillery.

The final destination was Lime Kiln Point (Whale Watch) State Park, where the hands were evaluated, prizes awarded, and games ensued. The winning hand, a 9 high straight, was Paul Langdon’s, who hauled in a trophy and a whale watch tour, and the lowest hand, also 9 high, was Jimmy Norton’s, who rode up from Edmonds, garnering a whale watch tour as well. “Abbey Road” rocks the theatre this coming Sunday – Contributed photo

A “Beatles” of an Independence Weekend!

After a summer without them in Friday Harbor, the island’s favorite Beatles tune masters “get back” to San Juan Community Theatre on Sunday, July 5 at 7:30 pm.

Since 2002, Abbey Road LIVE! has been rocking the music of the Beatles at theaters, clubs and festivals across the country. This will be the fifth time to the island since 2009 for the band from Athens, with each performance bringing in folks of all ages to share in the magic.

Each time, these guys are here they light up the Whittier with full-blown energy— keeping most everyone on their feet, singing along to their favorite Beatles songs,” said SJCT Promotion Director Jan Bollwinkel-Smith.

Initially a tribute to the monumental Abbey Road album, the band has expanded its repertoire to include more than 100 Beatles tunes, from all eras of the Fab Four’s career.

Not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act (don’t expect mop-top wigs and fake British accents), these guys are all about the MUSIC of the Beatles.

The Business Partner for the evening is Friday Harbor Suites. Tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for student reserved, with $5 student RUSH at the door. The SJCT box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm or buy online at www.sjctheatre.org

It’s the SJ Historical Society, back with this month’s History Column…

July is an active month for island art lovers, with the Friday Harbor Art Market at Brickworks Plaza each Friday and the Summer Arts Fair, now in its 20th year, coming up on July 11. But the island was abuzz with art activity long before our current annual traditions were established.

Pictured here is a 1925 summer scene from the UW Friday Harbor Labs, taken during a plein air art class. Now, the King Farmhouse and other buildings at the San Juan Historical Museum have been subjects of paintings.

Please let us know if you would like to find your artistic inspiration on these lovely grounds. Contact info is available on our website.
