Thank You United Way!

Posted April 28, 2015 at 5:18 am by

thank-youLetter to the Editor: Thank You United Way of San Juan County

United Way of San Juan County is an amazingly helpful organization that supports many needed programs on our islands, that would otherwise go unfunded.

Primary Intervention Program (PIP), also known as the Special Pal Program, is one of the programs supported by United Way. This program is based out of Friday Harbor Elementary School and is designed to help each student have the most successful learning experience possible by encouraging healthy self-image and positive social skills.

PIP staff and trained volunteers help students in the primary grades with these goals. So far this year, over 50 students have participated in the program. This school program would not be possible without the significant financial support from United Way. During a time when state funding for education and other services has been inconsistent, United Way has stepped in to save many essential and deserving programs, like PIP. I encourage the community to continue its support of United Way. Thank You!

Sincerely,
Amara Zee and Teresa Tilton
PIP Coordinators

‘To the Moon and Beyond’ is a historical journey that begins with photos and personal memorabilia from the 1920’s through the founding of and international acclaim of Luxel Corporation.

This presentation showcases Steele’s life and scientific contributions ranging from the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to the electroluminescent lighting aboard the Apollo Lunar Module to the “best white-light images of the sun” from Space Lab 2.

There is much more. Stop by the Village to honor Gordon Nevins Steele, an island smart guy, scientist, inventor, builder, roller coaster phenom and San Juan County Fair zucchini racer extraordinaire.

Reese is this week’s Pet of the Week – Traci Walter photo

Hello! I’m Reese and I’m fairly certain you have never seen a more beautiful dog than ME! I’m a mature gal of about 7 and I love, love, love people!

What I love most of all, though is food! That’s right – I’m a foodie! I love it so much, I need to be on a little bit of a diet, to keep me healthy and trim. (Swimsuit season is just around the corner, you know.)

I get along great with other dogs and I even like cats. You should stop by the animal shelter and meet me! Bring me a snack!

Cardboard Camp is an opportunity to explore corrugated cardboard at length. Students will learn about the many things we can do with this ordinary material by creating various projects such as self portraits and more. We’ll touch on some basic anatomy, color theory and perspective in this compact Cardboard Camp !

ALL of the cardboard we use is from local island businesses – absolutely EVERYTHING was saved from the dump! Kids should wear clothing that can get a bit messy with glue, paint and oil pastels. All they need to bring is a snack (we take a snack break at the half way point) and a positive attitude !

Tests Rule Out Measles in Suspected San Juan Island Case

Posted April 26, 2015 at 7:21 pm by

County-LogoSan Juan County Health Officials report that tests performed on a patient on San Juan Island have ruled out measles. The test were performed and analyzed at the State Public Health Laboratory in Shoreline on samples from a patient who was reported Tuesday, April 21st as having a rash, fever and other symptoms that suggested measles.

Health & Community Services Director Mark Tompkins reported that as soon as a physician on San Juan Island reported the possible case to the health department, public health officials took precautionary steps to prevent the potential spread of an infectious disease. The movements of the person exhibiting the symptoms were traced and steps were taken to determine who could have been exposed during the presumed contagious period, and to determine their immunity to measles.

The businesses and the employees we worked with were extremely cooperative and spent a tremendous amount of time and effort to make sure the community was protected,” said Joanne Runyan, Public Health Nurse. “It is reassuring to have that kind of response, and we are grateful for their help.

The results and analysis of tests performed by the Washington state lab were returned late Friday afternoon. The conclusion, “This was a rash illness, but not measles. Work continues to determine the cause of the illness” said San Juan County Health Officer Dr. Frank James.
