Possible Service Disruption

Posted March 19, 2014 at 5:03 am by

centurylink-logoJust got this heads up from CenturyLink:

Scheduled routine maintenance of NoaNet fiber could affect CenturyLink customers

NoaNet, a nonprofit broadband provider, will perform scheduled routine maintenance of its fiber in the San Juan Islands on March 19. During this scheduled maintenance, CenturyLink customers may experience up to a two-hour service disruption affecting Internet and long distance dialing. However, 911 and interisland dialing will not be affected.

  • WHO: CenturyLink customers
  • WHAT: NoaNet’s scheduled fiber maintenance
  • WHERE: San Juan County
  • WHEN: 1:00 – 5:00 a.m. March 19

Good news – it’s in the wee small hours when most of us will be asleep anyway…

picture 169And as far as the Barn Dance Fundraiser, Jess’ sister Courtney has the lowdown on that:

Jess will be here to do the 10k on Saturday morning along with all of the other Run Ladies Run gals. That evening we will be having a big barn dance with food, drinks & music. This event is family friendly & is open to all islanders, not just the runners. Jess and her husband Danny are really excited to see lots of friends and be able to thank our island community in person for all of their support! Entry to the dance is by donation. All of the proceeds from the barn dance go directly to the Jessica Oldwyn Fund at Islanders Bank to help with the cost of her treatments.

The Barn Dance will be at Brickworks from 5:00 to 10:00 PM. So break out your cowboy boots, come on down & get ready to dance!!

This family friendly event is open to all islanders & friends as well as all of you lady walker/runners!

Everyone who meets Mr. Gibbs immediately falls in love with him! He is a 6-year old wire-haired Dachshund / Corgi mix with a great personality and so much love to give. Mr. Gibbs lost his family and home due to foreclosure and would really appreciate feeling loved and safe again. He gets along well with cats and other dogs and has a very calm, quiet demeanor. Do you have room in your home and heart for 12 pounds of unconditional love? Get in touch with the Shelter.

Capt. Jack & Mate Andy and the crew on the inter-island ferry Hiyu reported that the T49A’s (transient orcas) showed up Friday afternoon right outside Friday Harbor!  And they stayed in the area for around 3 hours feeding on seals and porpoise…

It’s been a beautiful week to be on the water, that’s for sure! The week started off with transient orcas known as the T18’s and T19B (Old Floppy Fin). The T49A’s were also spotted on the West-Side by Jim Maya. There are four orcas in both of these groups. Gray whales are being seen down in the Sound and around Everette. Green Point is the place to be when it comes to sea lions and wonderful brightly colored Harlequin ducks… Other wildlife being seen are seals, harbor porpoise, very playful Dall’s porpoise, eagles and tons of seabirds. Our southern resident orca pods are most likely still off-shore. Check out the PWWA and the SJIVB websites to see who’s running trips. Cheers from the PWWA.

Readers Theatre at SJCT March 18 and 19

San Juan Community Theatre’s On Book! Readers Theatre series features Christopher Durang’s comical Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gubelman Theatre.

The Tony Award-winning play features middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia who live in the family home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Named for characters in plays by Anton Chekhov, Vanya and Sonia have not had to grow up. Neither has a job, and money is provided by their sister Masha, who is a movie star, who owns the house and pays the bills. Vanya (who is gay) and Sonia (who is forever reminding everyone that she is adopted) spend their days doing nothing, bemoaning their rather Chekovian lot in life. Their world is turned upside down when Masha returns home bringing her much younger dimwitted lover, Spike.

The reading is directed by Joy Van Camp.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with festival seating. Admission is free.

Apply Now for Summer Arts Fair

Posted March 16, 2014 at 6:10 am by

Summer-Arts-Fair-2014-banner
The San Juan Island Summer Arts Fair is the largest and longest-running art extravaganza on the islands. Held the third weekend in July, we block off Court Street with rows of white tents where talented artists show and sell their wares to the sounds of fun local music wafting over the courthouse lawn. Buy a lunch from one of the food vendors and have a picnic on the lawn before exploring the fantastic pottery, textiles, jewelry, paintings, photography, sculpture, soaps, furniture, hammocks and so much more. Each artist is on site at their booth and ready to answer your questions.

Island Rec leads the always-anticipated Chalk It Up event, where kids of all ages decorate the courthouse sidewalks. Creative Passions Craft Supply House has a children’s crafts tent where all kinds of fun summer souvenirs are created with the help of crafter-extraordinaire Bonnie Turman.

Yummy desserts and a fabulous musical lineup complete the day with lively marimba, country, folk, local rock n roll. You won’t want to miss this one: The Summer Arts Fair is the most anticipated art festival of the year!

(Make your hotel reservations early!)

Sponsored by the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce.

For an art or food vendor application, email:

Hi Tim,

I wanted to pass along a note to recognize the hard work of the San Juan LEO Club. Recently, they helped us at the San Juan Historical Museum to move a portion of our agricultural collection to an offsite storage location, as we proceed in the development of our new Museum of History and Industry (MHI). In the process, they learned a bit of history about some interesting relics of the past.

The kids pulled together and truly made a difference and were rewarded for their hard work with pizza and the feeling of doing a good deed!

Thank you San Juan LEOS!
