Brother Ian’s Top Ten

Posted February 12, 2014 at 5:58 am by

Did you think Ian would move to Victoria and not publish online anymore? Neither did I, and guess what… He’s got quite a site going on. It’s called The World According to Brother Ian and here’s something off of one of his pages…

bro-ianWe’re getting there, even though it’s a little slow sometimes (it seems) and difficult in places….I have a strong feeling that there are ten things we could add to the way we raise our kids & our own spirits that would re-shape how we do, or in some cases, give definition to the things we already do that work.

The stories we tell are the backbone of the actions we take, the feelings we share & the directions we’re headed. Stories that are based on basic truths & grounded ways to treat each other will serve us the best.

Teachers & mamas & papas & aunts & favourite uncles & older brothers & kindly strangers…let’s build our evolution together on this: (Click here to see Ian’s Ten Things).

Thanks Ian!

Real Estate Procedures

Posted February 12, 2014 at 5:56 am by

Are you looking to buy or sell some real estate? Merri Ann Simonsen over at Coldwell Banker has some great, detailed information for you which is a great place to start. Here’s an excerpt…

merri-annIt is important for you to understand the Law of Real Estate Agency. Years back, Department of Licensing determined that most buyers felt that the agent represented them. However, the law at the time required all agents to be subagents of the seller, thereby technically representing the seller. It was for this reason that Congress revised the agency laws to the current ones, which allow for three types of agency representation:

  1. Buyer’s representation is when the agent is representing the buyer and intends to obtain property at the lowest possible sales price.
  2. Seller’s representation is when the agent has a listing with the seller and is attempting to obtain the highest possible sales price.
  3. Dual agency is when the agent shows a buyer one of their own listings and the buyer decides to purchase it. In the case of dual agency, the agent represents the seller as well as the buyer.

Meet Your Firefighter – Lenora Johnson

Posted February 11, 2014 at 5:55 am by

Sheila Harley invites you to Meet Your Firefighter for the month…

Lenora Johnson is this month's volunteer firefighter -

Lenora Johnson is this month’s volunteer firefighter – Ron Garner photo – Click for larger version

Lenora is a Senior at Spring Street School! She is taking several Advanced Placement core classes and American Sign Language in the afternoon two days a week. Her Senior project was to make sure that Spring Street had an updated fire safety plan and that all the 5th/6th graders and staff can operate fire extinguishers. Lenora was involved in Fire Safety at Friday Harbor Elementary school, the Safety Fair, and participated in the San Juan Island Every 15 Minutes presentation which is a national program educating students about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Lenora is what the fire department calls a Cadet. She has undergone all the training and testing it takes to be a firefighter at the local level, but has to wait to take the National exam this summer after she graduates.

Why, might you ask, would a young girl go into firefighting? She has been in the community for about 10 years and felt that she wanted to give something back.

She finds firefighting to be rewarding and says, “It takes the right kind of person to be a firefighter.” She says that a person must be committed and willing to undergo all of the training required to safely perform his/her duties. He/she must have a good sense of team work, display leadership, and follow directions of his/her officer.

Lenora invites anyone who is interested in learning what it’s all about (no matter your age) to come to the fire station on Mullis Street to visit us or call the station at 378-5334 for more information. San Juan Island Fire Rescue is always looking for volunteers to join them in protecting life and property.

Pet Food Drive

Posted February 11, 2014 at 5:45 am by

Here’s a notice from the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor on their upcoming pet food drive…

aps-logo24The Humane Society of the United States has announced that the 20th Annual World Spay Day will take place February 25. World Spay Day shines a spotlight on spay/neuter as a proven means of saving the lives of companion animals, feral cats, and homeless pets.

For 20 years World Spay Day has provided a unique opportunity for everyone who cares about animals to join together toward a common goal —a comprehensive global, united effort to end the euthanasia and suffering of companion animals.

The Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor will observe and participate in World Spay Day as they have for the last several years – by kicking off the Annual Community Pet Food Drive Friday, February 14.

This year in an effort to top previous years’ donations, the APS has issued a group challenge and invites island businesses and/or organizations to join in the fun by accepting our challenge to collect the most dry or canned pet food during the 11-day drive. Donors may also contribute cash to be used to purchase pet food for the drive. Pet food donations will be tracked and tallied by the shelter.

Our goal this year is to collect a total of 2 tons of food! The contest will conclude Tuesday, February 25 and the winning team will be announced that evening at the annual “Spaygetti Dinner” at the Mullis Center. The company or organization who collects the most pet food will receive a delicious Lunch for your Group, prepared and delivered by APS staff and volunteers.

For more information on participating in this fun event, contact Jan Murphy or Leslie Byron at the animal shelter at (360) 378-2158 or

Pet of the Week

Scooby is the Pet of the Week

Scooby is the Pet of the Week

Last minute pet change this morning – Now it’s Scooby…

Poor Scooby has been here at the shelter for so long waiting for someone to take him home. We can’t understand why; he’s such a nice young man and has so much to offer. He’s about 4 years old and is very well-mannered and friendly. He loves to play and gets along well with other cats. We think he’d be just fine with dogs, too. If you’ve been thinking about adding a new member to your family stop by the shelter and meet Scooby.
