Empowering messages like Dream Big, Find your Destiny, Be the Party and Stand Up, Stand Out, Choose Health gave 6 local San Juan Island teens a lot to think about and new skills to act upon these messages they heard in workshops, presentations and service projects in Yakima where the 3 day Summit is held annually.

The San Juan Island Prevention Coalition sponsored these youth from Spring Street International School and Friday Harbor High School.

“These youth already work hard to make a difference in their schools through various clubs like ROCK SOLID and H.O.T.S. (Helping Out Teens Society) however, we have an opportunity to collaborate and bring them together to make a greater impact for our community” says Team Advisor, Debbi Fincher.

In addition, we invited Jason Davis of Island Rec and Meagan Gable the new Prevention Intervention Specialist at FHMS/FHHS to help chaperone the group and build a stronger support system for these teens.

We’ve heard loud and clear that many youth want to get involved but they just need some support and guidance from the adults in their community. As Teddy McCullough said,

“We want to do the work, we just need your help to show us what resources are available and support us along the way”.

As you may know, Teddy is from Lopez Island Prevention Coalition and a Junior at American University. He is an intern at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and was a presenter and Youth Co-Emcee this year at the Summit. One of our team’s favorite presentations was Teddy’s workshop when he spoke to the power of dreaming big and finding ways to navigate around obstacles. Never give up!

The group is pictured here: Lucas Gao, Zach Fincher, Per Black, Teddy McCullough, Sammy Finch, Madrona Jameson and Rachel May. Watch for some amazing projects and ideas to come from this team. If they ask for your help and support, we hope you can offer it. Thank you. The San Juan Island Prevention Coalition.

HarvestFest is a safe, kid-friendly, family-oriented alternative to scary Halloween parties. Our goal is to provide a safe but fun place for toddlers, preschool & elementary age children to experience the fun of trick-or-treating without the crowded streets & scary costumes of older kids.

Started as a Harvest party more than 25 years ago the event has been moved this year to Calvary San Juan with the help of Christ the King, Friday Harbor Presbyterian and Islands Community Church.

Food for the Eaglets

Posted October 25, 2013 at 5:15 am by

wolf-hollow-logoWolf Hollow Needs Your Help! Only 3 days to go and we’re coming up short. We’ve created a crowd-funded campaign to help Wolf Hollow rehabilitate two Bald Eaglets. The main cost involved in raising these eaglets is FOOD – lots of it. They are big birds and need a lot of high quality food to grow and develop muscles and feathers well.

We feed them a range of foods including rats, quail, salmon, venison and beef. The salmon and beef are mostly donated and the venison is from road-kill deer, but we have to buy the rats and quail. They eat the equivalent of three rats a day at @ $2.00 apiece for around 7 months (we can’t take the rats from the wild as we don’t know what sort of environment they are from). And quail is even more expensive! So please help out if you can – even a buck or two. Click here to help.

Howard (Howie) Rosenfeld Position Statement

Posted October 24, 2013 at 5:00 pm by

howieAs a candidate for Public Hospital District #1 I’ve received inquiries about my positions. I want to be as clear as possible:

  • I support women’s reproductive services.
  • I support the AG Opinion that facilities providing maternity care must provide the full range of women’s reproductive health services. My position is the Hospital District has a responsibility to see that these services, needed by the community, are provided.
  • I support end of life services including Death With Dignity. Patients need to be assured their health directives will be honored and access to end of life services made easily accessed.
  • I support using best medical practices. I’ve stated that I don’t support religion in medical care besides providing a healing environment and praying for good outcomes.
  • I support affordable health care. Costs for basic medical care locally continue to increase. This is a major concern important to all of us.
  • I support our Emergency Medical Service (EMS). I’m a former first responder that believes our EMS is one of the best in the country and I want to keep it that way.

We’ve got a great EMS and Hospital. I want to work with Peace Health, their local hospital board and the County Board of Health to ensure the best, affordable medical care for our community.
Please see http://www.howardrosenfeld.com/aboutme.html for my background.

Working with traditional and nontraditional materials, Marsha mixes her oil, acrylic, wax and enamel paints using dry pigment and metallic flake, resulting in a luminescent surface. Her process has a direct, physical immediacy creating a dynamic spatial tension that stirs an emotional, often visceral, response.

We will also be featuring the regionally themed oil paintings of Lopez Island artist Mike Rust

Here’s a letter to share with you from Film Festival Director Lynn Danaher and crew…

fhff-logo-vertical

Dear Editor,

The Friday Harbor Film Festival could not have enjoyed such great success without the generous support of our sponsors, enthusiastic dedication of our volunteers and all the community members of Friday Harbor who participated in the first annual Friday Harbor Film Festival. Thanks to all for extending such a warm welcome to our filmmakers and off island visitors, many who came to Friday Harbor for the first time. We had filmmakers travel from as far away as China and Hawaii to share their films and be available for Q & A. The comment cards were full of compliments about how friendly everyone was, they loved our little town and felt very welcome. There were several great suggestions made as well; we are taking them to heart so we can improve our future event. Please let us know if you have any to add. [email protected] Some great statistics worth sharing; of the 1,100 tickets sold or given to volunteers or sponsors, 29.5% were from off island. Most of the screenings were approx. 66% full. Opalco Earns Top Communication Awards

Posted October 22, 2013 at 4:17 pm by

opalco-logoAt the Northwest Public Power Association’s annual Northwest Innovations Conference in September, OPALCO was honored with two of the top Excellence in Communication awards: First place for best annual report publication (2012) and another First place for a collection of commemorative items created for the
Co-op’s 75th Anniversary celebration.

The Excellence in Communication contest recognizes the top communication efforts from Northwest Public Power Association (NWPPA) member utilities and associations. NWPPA is an international association representing and serving more than 150 customer-owned, locally controlled utilities in Western U.S. and Canada as well as nearly 300 associate members who are allied with the electric utility industry. The 2013 Excellence in Communication awards received 176 entries from 40 different utility and associate members.

Receiving the awards, OPALCO Communication Specialist Suzanne Olson thanked Tif & Gif of Friday Harbor who did the design for the 2012 Annual Report – and created our 75th Anniversary icon. Olson also recognized Touchstone Energy Cooperative who, through their partnership and discount program, made it possible to create affordable and high quality branded items for our members during our 75th Anniversary celebration year.

The 2012 Annual Report, which also served as OPALCO’s 75th Anniversary publication, is available online at www.opalco.com/history/. The various commemorative items, such as caps, bags, mugs, pins and lunch bags can be seen throughout the islands as co-op members wear them, carry them to work and school and display them in their homes. 75th Anniversary commemorative calendars are still available at your OPALCO offices and 2014 replacement pages will be available in December.

OPALCO is our member-owned cooperative electric utility, powering more than 11,000 members on 20 islands in San Juan County. OPALCO provides electricity that is 95% greenhouse-gas free and is generated predominantly by hydroelectric plants. OPALCO was founded in 1937.

11 Island Actresses are Talking With…

Eleven women embracing unusual sides of life—sometimes eccentric, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant—are showcased in San Juan Community Theatre’s fall play Thursday through Sunday, October 24-27.

Jane Martin’s Talking With…., composed of 11 ten-minute monologues, covers a wide spectrum of life and age, from a snake handler to a disenchanted rodeo cowgirl to a young aspiring actress to a tattooed woman and a baton twirler. Each reveals unique circumstances and an unveiling of emotions to spark conversation long after the curtains close.

The play was last performed at SJCT during the Theatre’s first year of operation in 1989. Two of this year’s cast members, SJCT Artistic Director Susan Williams (who is also directing the play) and Julie Greene had roles in the 1989 version of the play as well. “As part of our 25-year celebration, it feels great to revisit this thought-provoking production,” said Williams. “It shares a very special part of our history with new actresses and new patrons.”

In addition to Williams and Greene, the cast features several veteran actresses that Williams calls “some of the Island’s finest talents”:

  • Patti Bair
  • Therese Finn
  • Penelope Haskew
  • Shannon Kelley
  • Julie Laidlaw
  • Maureen See
  • Fiona Small
  • Kate Small
  • Joy Van Camp

The play—with only four performances (Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday)— will be performed on a transformed Whittier stage that has been extended out into the audience to create a more intimate and up close setting, limiting the number of audience members each night to a maximum of 120 (the Whittier regularly seats up to 285 people).

The Business Partners for the production are Robin’s Nest and Coho Restaurant. Tickets are $17 for adults, $8 for student reserved and $5 student RUSH at the door. The SJCT box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased on-line at www.sjctheatre.org
