The workshop was held at the Grange Sunday and Monday and it was AWESOME!

FHFF Tuesday – Recovering Lost Heritage

Posted August 25, 2013 at 9:01 pm by

How much have your grandparents passed on to you about your family’s heritage? How many generations would it take for your people to forget their past?

heritage-filmThis week’s film tells the story of a lost culture and the work being done to recover it. Come out Tuesday, August 27 at 7 pm to view The Adventurers: A Story Told in Stone, the weekly documentary offering from the Friday Harbor Film Festival at the FHFF office (10 First St., next door to The Toy Box. Admission is by donation, including free popcorn. Seating is limited.

This film draws us into the world of the Polynesians of Raivavae in the Austral Islands and the Nuku Hiva on the Marquesas Islands. Edmundo Edwards (Pacific Islands Research and Education Institute) is working with island nations seeking out their lost and deliberately hidden civilization. The people know nothing of their past because following their discovery by Europeans, who brought missionaries and foreign diseases, 80% of the population died within a short period of time. Survivors were converted to Christianity, destroying the symbols of their religion. Now archaeologists are uncovering who these people had been for thousands of years.

Stand with Those Who Serve Week

In recognition of the thousands of public safety personnel that have been called to serve their city, state and country each and every day, Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed the week of August 25 – September 1, 2013 to be “Stand With Those Who Serve Week” in the state of Washington.

stand-serveWashington’s public safety personnel from city, county, state, federal and military are often called to serve daily in a variety of ways throughout the great State of Washington. In many cases, their commitment extends well past a day at work and these same caring individuals are the coaches, mentors and leaders in their own communities.

Washington’s public safety agencies work collaboratively to safeguard life and property even in the face of personal harm on a daily basis. We would like the citizens of Washington State to take the time to show your support for the public safety community by letting them know that you “Stand With Those Who Serve”.

Eddie Rivera July 10, 1960 – August 22, 2013

Eddie Rivera July 10, 1960 – August 22, 2013

Eddie Rivera joined our island community in the summer of 2004 and we were all touched by being his friends. Those that knew Eddie enjoyed his enthusiasm for technology, long walks and felt his big generous heart.

Eddie participated in a wide variety of activities, whether you knew Eddie from trivia, volley ball, nature, technology, the dog park, hiking, traveling, your office, March Madness or just sharing a Guinness or glass of champagne, no matter what he was doing he filled up the room.

Please join us and his brothers in the celebration of his life on August 29 at the white farm house located at 75 Cattle Point Road. Potluck and beverages starting at 5:00 pm.

A Huge Thank You…

Posted August 24, 2013 at 1:24 pm by

This is a belated thank you letter from me, your SJ Update editor Tim Dustrude, to everyone who helped out with the photo exhibit at the Fair this year…

I was the superintendent of the photography exhibit at the Fair this year and it was sometimes almost overwhelming – scheduling, planning, brainstorming, connecting, creating…  and having never done it before, it was like shooting in the dark. Luckily I was mentored in the beginning by Bob Stavers, the superintendent of the last 5 years, and I would like to acknowledge him and say “Thanks Bob!

But there was one big failure on my part and I would like to try to make up for that here. I failed to publicly acknowledge and thank all the volunteers and judges that worked so hard to make this happen. I could not have done it without them. So here they are in alphabetical order: Continue Reading

Footloose Flash Mob at the Fair

Posted August 22, 2013 at 3:30 pm by

Here’s something fun that happened on Saturday, the last day of the 2013 SJC Fair. It was originally an idea of Zach and Debbi Fincher of the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition and their Rock Solid Youth Group. They organized it and got ahold of Julie Hagn and Michelle Mazzerella who choreographed the dance and got people to join in from the crowd and dance.

Add a few people shooting video and sending it to Dustrude Photography for production and we have a little video to share with you. Turn up the speakers and dance like no one’s watching!

Water, Stone and the Woods

Water-Stone

Water by Randall Tipton & Stone by Tom Small – Click for larger version

There’s a new show opening at Waterworks Gallery and running August 24 through Sept 14:

  • Tom Small – Recent Stone, wood and glass sculptures.
  • Randall Tipton – Abstract landscape paintings

Tom Small’s recent sculptures worked in cast glass, basalt or wood convey the tactile nature of sculpture yet the designs resonate with elegance and simplicity. While complicated enough to demand our attention in finding the visual details.

Randall’s landscape paintings whether in acrylic or oil portray his love of the land, whether it is the coastline, the mountains or the woodlands. His portrayal, abstracted and seemingly unfinished, allows the viewer to see the landscape in a lighter way.

Each artist captures the spirit of the subject in their respective media with the details and marks, allowing the viewer to bring their own experience to the work.

Reception for the artists, Saturday August 24
