From the Update Mailbox

Posted October 9, 2013 at 5:25 am by

Here’s an email that popped in the other day… Charlie, is this thing still around?

Hi Tim , I saw a picture of a wrecking ball posted in the San Juan Island Update by Ian Byington on June 8, 2009 with a for sale sign on it apparently owned by Charlie Beacham.  Wondering if its still around,  etc.

Thanks, John

Fall Beginnings for Local Boaters

Here’s an update from FH Sailing Club submitted by Ron DiCristina:

San Juan Island’s Friday Harbor Sailing Club has had a busy summer with sailboat races, Mitchell Bay BBQ’s and numerous member cruises. Autumn is time to gather once again for indoor events, prepare for the big Round the County Race and other fall/winter boating activities.

FHSC invites interested boaters to attend our potluck meeting this Tuesday, October 8, at the Friday Harbor Grange. The engaging social hour begins about 5:30 pm and everyone ‘packs it in, packs it out’ including their dinnerware. This is followed by a potluck dinner and an educational meeting, which this week, is presented by Andy Schwenk, owner of Northwest Rigging.

The Friday Harbor Sailing Club is a friendly non-profit group of both sail and power boat enthusiasts, who organize, promote and encourage amateur sailing, sailboat racing and power boat activities. The group is a low key that knows how to have fun, not only while boating, but at meetings! New to San Juan Island? Want to become a member of the boating community? Give the Friday Harbor Sailing Club a visit.

For more info, membership inquiries or if you would like to attend the meeting, please contact Terry Lush at 360-378-7004 or email:

The Best Salmon Melt Ever

Posted October 8, 2013 at 6:21 am by

Chef Hobbes brings you a great sandwich idea this time. Makin’ me hungry!

Click to make your stomach growl

Click to make your stomach growl

This is a brilliant way to use up leftover salmon and have a nutritious, killer sandwich for lunch or dinner!

Recipe for 4 sandwiches:

About a 1/2 pound cold cooked salmon
1/2 red onion very finely diced
1 stalk celery very finely diced
1/2 red bell pepper very finely diced
1/4 c Italian parsley, leaves picked and chopped
1 c Best Foods mayo
1 big pinch of cayenne pepper
salt and pepper

8 slices sourdough bread from Bakery San Juan
butter and a little olive oil for cooking

Mix all the ingredients together to form a stiff mixture, adding more or less mayo. Spread the mixture out evenly onto the bread. Place a little oil and butter in a heavy saute pan and put it on medium low heat, you want to warm all the ingredients up together and not brown the bread too quickly.

Bon Appetit! Chef Hobbes

Some Changes at the County

Posted October 7, 2013 at 5:20 am by

County-LogoPersonnel Changes & New Office Hours at Community Development and Planning

San Juan County Manager Mike Thomas has announced a number of changes in the County’s Community Development and Planning Department, including new leadership, and longer operating hours.

“For the past few months, our Director of Community Development and planning, Rene Beliveau, and I have been discussing his department and future plans. This week, in consultation with the County Council, I concluded that everything was in place to make the announcement,” said Thomas. Beliveau will continue serving in his position until November 3, 2013.

Beliveau moved into the department director’s position in July of 2009 with the departure of then-director Ron Henrickson. In a move described as “streamlining and realigning” the department in the wake of severe budget cutbacks, Beliveau retained his responsibilities as the County’s building official as well as assuming the administrative duties of running one of the County’s largest, highest profile departments.

County Manager Thomas praised Beliveau for bringing expertise and professionalism to a department during difficult times – as the County was going through cutbacks, and dealing with volatile regulatory issues including mandatory updates to the Critical Areas Ordinance and other Growth Management Act Issues; and through a change in the form of County government.

“As he told me, this was not a position he sought out. It was a tough job and he put everything he had into it,” Thomas said. Continue Reading

Putting Some Feelers Out

Posted October 4, 2013 at 12:40 pm by

This is just an idea at this point, but SJCT and Island Stage Left want to put some feelers out there and see how much interest there is. If you’re interested in this, send an email and let them know…

Ed. Note: – This post is updated to include the following: This is a joint idea to be developed IF there is interest, between Island Stage Left and San Juan Community Theatre.

We have what we think is a very exciting idea and want to see if it might fly – literally! I am thinking about taking a group of island folk on a theatre tour to London, Stratford-on-Avon and possibly Dublin (The Abbey Theatre).

It would be a guided tour, with details yet to be determined, but probably for 2 weeks, in either spring or fall, and with the idea of renting a big house in London and staying in a hotel in Stratford and Dublin. I would be your guide for preshow preparation and post show discussion – and, of course, London is my home town and theatre my area of expertise, so hopefully I might be quite useful!

We would love to get an idea of the level of interest. Any response would be much appreciated.

You could just reply:

  • PERHAPS” (as in “I’m interested in hearing more”)
  • I’M IN!” (as in “I would definitely like to be part of this”)
  • NO, THANKS” (as in – “Please don’t contact me again”)
  • or anything else you’d like to say…

We are also toying with the idea of making one or two places available for people who might not otherwise be able to go.

Please send us your response. It will help us immensely.

Thanks so much,

Helen
