Carol says “Welcome”

Posted March 14, 2013 at 5:29 am by

I ran into Carol Holt at Castaways consignment shop on Nichols St. the other day. If you have some good quality used items that you would like to free yourself of, but you don’t quite want to give them away, go see Carol or her husband Terry and they’ll sell your stuff for you and then share the money with you.
Or, on the other hand, if you don’t have enough good quality used items, they can help you solve that problem too. 317-6450.

Front Street Construction

front-street

Have you seen all the construction going on down there on Front Street by the ferry landing and wondered what’s going on? I talked to Mike Bertrand at the Town and he filled me in. The official title of the project is the “Friday Harbor Terminal Pedestrian & Safety Improvement”.

Washington State Ferries is improving the safety and flow of pedestrian traffic, especially coming off of the ferry, by adding bumpouts, crosswalks, a 12 foot wide staircase up to the sidewalk, an information kiosk and a better wheelchair ramp. This will help keep pedestrian traffic separated from vehicle traffic by making the crosswalks, sidewalks, stairs, ramp and kiosk more inviting.

Front Street will be just as wide as before (except where the crosswalk and bumpouts are), and there will be the same amount of parking as before. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 27 (however if we have much more rain like Tuesday morning, it could be delayed by a few days). Click the image below for a larger version to see what it’s going to look like.

Barbara and Goosie

barb-goosy

That’s Barbara Defalco holding up her friend Goosie. He’s quite tame for a wild goose – he walked right up to the delivery van when I pulled up, probably hoping I had something for him, but alas – there was only the one package for Barbara. Goosie runs with his pal Odin, a big Pit Bull or Rotweiller or something like that (Odin was too fast for me to get a picture of him) and he’s a pretty big bird, especially when he flaps those wings!

St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza Coming Soon!

Posted March 13, 2013 at 5:37 am by

Becki Day wanted me to let you know about the Soroptimists’ big fundraiser coming up this weekend. Here’s Becky to fill you in:

CBC-Chairs-2013

The Soroptimists of Friday Harbor will be holding their biggest and most important fund-raiser of the year, the St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza, on Saturday, March 16, at the Mullis Center. All proceeds from this fun-filled event will support the service club’s many important activities, which primarily benefit the island’s women and girls.

The doors will open at 5 pm, when guests can start enjoying drinks, appetizers, and music, as well as browse the attractive displays of both silent and live auction items. Tickets for chances at an array of enticing raffle items will be available for sale.

At 6:00, a yummy dinner catered by Vinny’s Ristorante will be served, featuring the traditional corned beef and cabbage, or a vegetarian entrée. After dinner, an entertaining live auction, with a variety of great things to bid on including 2 different Hawaii lodging donations; one is a week’s stay at an oceanfront condo on Kauai and another on Molokai.

Because seating is limited, people are encouraged to buy their dinner tickets ahead of time at the Toy Box or Spa d’Bune, or from any Soroptimist. The tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (65+), and $10 for children (10 and under). Dinner-to-go tickets are also available for $12 each, available for pick up between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm. Co-chairs Debbi Staehlin, 378-7232 or Becki Day, 298-0458.

Soil Symphonic

Posted March 13, 2013 at 5:09 am by

The following was written by Michele Heller:

Every one of us has a relationship with the magical stuff underfoot whether we know it or not—some call it dirt, some call it soil. Mostly, unless we consider ourselves farmers or gardeners, we don’t think of it much at all. And yet, the condition of soil and how we treat it, globally and locally, influences the quality of the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and even the rate of climate change.

This humble substance known as soil has been aptly called “the foundation of civilization.” It is the subject of a new feature-length film Symphony of the Soil by Deborah Koons Garcia, who also directed The Future of Food. Drawing from ancient knowledge and current science, the film is an artistic exploration of the miracle of soil and why it is important to life on earth.

This 104-minute documentary is ultimately the story of community. It describes in fascinating detail the hidden world that supports our existence as part of a natural system.

Symphony of the Soil is a film that lifts the spirits and provides inspiration, through magnificent cinematography, lucid explanations, and heartfelt story telling. As the film unfolds, it reveals soil as a precious and mysterious resource, as well as a model of a thriving, effective, and sustainable community. And we depend upon it for life.

Still wondering why should anyone want to see a film about soil? Find out for yourself! Bring a potluck dish on March 15 to the San Juan Grange Hall and enjoy the show. This event is sponsored by San Juan Island Grange #966. The potluck starts at 6 p.m. and the film starts at 7 p.m. For more information, call 370 7664.

Today our This is Our Town series puts the spotlight on Carol Jackson and Dilys Goodman.

Carol and Dilys are business partners and the co-owners of Serendipity Bookstore. The store was originally started pretty much on a whim one evening in 1995 when Carol and the late Betty Stewart said: “We’re both former teachers and librarians – Let’s open a book store!” and so they did.

Meet Fritz, this week's Pet of the Week

Meet Fritz, this week’s Pet of the Week

Why not celebrate St. Patrick’s day by adopting this adorable leprechaun?  “Fritz” is a Chihuahua-Pug mix, approximately 18 months old, who came to the shelter as a stray from the mainland.  Everyone who meets him is impressed with his good manners and charming personality.  He gets along very well with dogs of all sizes, and is very curious about cats, but would adapt well to living with them.  He’d love to live in a moderately active home where he would not be left alone for long periods of time.  Stop by the shelter soon to meet this sweet guy – 111 Shelter Road, Friday Harbor.
