Getting Happy

Posted January 4, 2013 at 5:09 am by

smileyThere is an emerging science of getting happy. Researchers are studying what brings happiness, and they’re finding patterns and similarities in the behaviors of happy people that can be reproduced in depressed people with positive results that are better than antidepressants, and with no expense or side effects. The old saying “Stop and smell the roses” is grounded in some serious wisdom. The movie “Happy” which was recently shown as part of the Conscientious Projector series at the library, really tells the story, but if you don’t have that kind of time (to watch a movie), take a quick look at this list of 10 things that science says can make us happy.

The train station in Portland

The train station in Portland

It’s always so much fun to see a familiar island face when traveling away from home. Getting on the train in Portland, we ran into Susan Matthews of the San Juan Island Community Foundation, coming home after visiting relatives for the holidays. What a small world – our assigned seats were right next to each other.

And speaking of trains… Just gotta say, if you’ve never ridden the train to Seattle or Portland or even Vancouver B.C., you really must give it a try. It’s quick, convenient, comfortable, and the scenery is fantastic.

Camping reservations

Now’s the time for locals to make camping reservations!

For 2013, County Parks is continuing its “residents only” opportunity to pre-reserve campsites at county parks. This year, the popular County Parks program offers residents a chance to make their prime-time summer camping reservations between Jan. 14 & Feb. 28.

This offer is available for camping at San Juan, Odlin (Lopez), and Shaw County Parks and the County Fairgrounds R.V. campsites. Camping reservations for the general public will begin March 1.

All three of the county campgrounds are located in waterfront parks with spectacular views, beautiful beaches, and small-craft boat launches. The County fairgrounds offers R.V. camping with water and electrical hook-ups, close proximity to downtown Friday Harbor and public beach.

Scheduled campground renovation and road construction at Odlin County Park on Lopez Island during the summer season (~May 1 – July 31) may impact campers. Camping rates for Odlin will be discounted 20% during construction.

Proof of residency will be required (verifiable local address and phone number, driver’s license, or voter registration). Additional information is available on the County Parks website: sanjuanco.com/Parks/camping.aspx.

County residents can email parks [at] sanjuanco .com or call the County Parks Department at 378‑8420 for a reservation form.

• Meanwhile, the island’s population grew earlier this week as Greg & Natalie King welcome baby Judah – congrats, you guys!

Here’s a new thing that’s coming in the new year – here’s more from Leslie Byron at the Animal Shelter:

Looking for a great way to celebrate the new year? Why not be on hand to celebrate the first ever “Yappy Hour” to benefit the Friday Harbor Animal Shelter? APS-FH will kick off the first of many Yappy Hours, (to be held the first Thursday of every month), on January 3rd at Vinny’s Restaurant from 4:00 to 5:30. Come enjoy cocktails and some “yappetizers” and a portion of your bill will be donated to the shelter! Vinny’s is located at 165 West Street in Friday Harbor.
