Soroptimist’s Fifth Annual Great Island Giveaway

Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor is putting on the ultimate swap meet recycling event, Saturday, November 3, 2012, at the Mullis Center from 10:30a.m. to12:00 noon.

Here is how it works:  Please bring up to twelve usable items in good/clean condition to exchange with you neighbors. For each item you bring, you are given a ticket that allows you to take an item you need. If you have nothing to donate, you can purchase tickets for a dollar a piece (this helps defray our rental cost). We cannot accept clothing, shoes, outdated electronics or dirty, broken objects.

The drop off for items starts at 10:30a.m.  Soroptimists provide coffee and sweets for you to enjoy while you size up the goods and mingle with your neighbors. At noon a bell is rung and the exchange begins; no items are exchanged prior to that nor can you gather up items.

Come share the wealth by exchanging and recycling with others in our community and have fun while doing it! Questions? Contact Pat Hansen, 378-3537.

• Time to get in the swim of things! Here’s more from Paul at the Fitness Club:

Swim Team Registration Open

Registration has begun for the 2012/2013 San Juan Island Fitness Swim Team.  Tryouts for those who were not on last years team will be held on Thursday, November 1, beginning at 5:15 p.m. and Friday, November 2, beginning at 3:15 p.m.

If your child is interested in swimming this year, registration forms can be picked up at San Juan Island Fitness, 435 Argyle Ave.  Deadline for registration is Friday, November 9 at 5:00 p.m.  Due to limited pool space and time, the team is limited to 32 members.  Swim team is open to any child ages 7 to 17.  Registration fees for this year have been reduced to reflect the trying economic times in our community.

For those lacking some basic skills necessary to have a positive swim team experience, there will be a “Seals Team” available.  Seals Team will meet two times per week from November 9 to December 7.

“We’re aiming at 3 meets vs. other regional clubs, two intra-squad meets and a dive clinic and play day at the Anacortes pool.  Our big emphasis this year, aside from building strong swimmers, is to have a lot of fun,” says Paul Hopkins, Orca Coach and owner of San Juan Island Fitness.  “Amy Wynn will be heading up the program and coaching the Dolphins.  Her enthusiasm and knowledge are great for the kids.”

More detailed information is posted on their web site at www.sanjuanislandfitness.com or contact San Juan Island Fitness at 378-4449.

This weekend! Lúnasa plays Friday Harbor!

• Time to get your dose of Irish music – and this weekend is the time for that! Jan Bollwinkel-Smith has more:

New York’s Irish Voice newspaper calls them “Ireland’s newest supergroup … the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet” and on Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m., Friday Harbor gets to see the quintet live at San Juan Community Theatre.

Named for an ancient Celtic festival in honor of the Irish god “Lugh,” patron of the arts, Lúnasa has quickly become one of the most sought-after bands on the international music scene.  The group’s inventive arrangement and bass-driven grooves have been moving Irish acoustic music into new territory, redefining Irish music by going right to the heart of its rhythms.  The result is a sound that, though distinctly Irish in flavor, touches on jazz and other improvisational music forms.

The band made its worldwide recording debut in 1997, with Lúnasa, a mix of concert and studio tracks from their first year of touring together.  The album became an instant best-seller in Ireland.  Soon after, they were touring Europe, Japan and Australia; their first American tour featured sold-out shows and rave reviews.  “A standing room only crowd in New York confirmed Lúnasa’s reputation,” wrote the Irish Voice. Watching the presidential race….

Posted November 2, 2012 at 4:36 am by

It’s been an interesting year, coming down to the wire….a few folks have asked what I read to keep up with the way the electoral college is shaping up. If that’s interesting to you, I’ll tell you that I like the way these two sites poll each state to arrive at the projected winner (the popular vote is meaningless, as Vice President Gore found out when he had a half million more votes, and lost).

The two sites you might want to watch in these few days before the election are Real Clear Politics and Electoral-vote.com….they break it down state-by-state. See what you think. Take a peek, and then see what it all looks like on Wednesday morning.

Personally, I believe it’s long past time for the electoral college to go (and yes, I have talked to my representative about it!) The thing was put to a vote (with President Nixon’s endorsement, it was called the Bayh-Celler Amendment) in 1969, but was filibustered to death in the Senate after the House overwhelmingly had voted for it – read about it here, in the first quarter of the article).

My bigger concern, though, is the way the Ohio election was handled in 2004…both the Conyers Report and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. report (read it! and then ask, “Why wasn’t this HUGE news?”) … both raise grave concerns that that election had fraud written all over it, and that both parties turned their heads given the evidence of it. Scary stuff for the country, and I hope that folks’ awareness – both Dems & GOPers –  grows about the direction it went that time. Stay informed.

Make yourself heard!

1,800 citizens attended Bellingham’s hearing on Saturday. It’s San Juan Island’s turn this week! Photo by Paul K. Anderson

Gotta tell ya – I don’t think the coal export plan to Bellingham is a good idea, and I’m glad to see so many people coming together to address that. Here’s more from Katie Fleming:

This Saturday!

This Saturday, November 3rd, is San Juan County’s opportunity to submit verbal comments on the Gateway Pacific Terminal (GPT). It is the most critical moment we’ve faced so far in this entire effort to stop coal export in the Salish Sea, and all the related marine impacts associated with coal export. Attend the scoping hearing and comment on GPT on Saturday November 3rd, 12 pm – 3 p.m. at Friday Harbor High.

We expect a large turnout so come at 11 a.m. if you live on San Juan Island, or take the the inter-island ferry that arrives to Friday Harbor at 11:15. Friday Harbor High School is about .5 miles from the ferry terminal. There will be a shuttle available from the ferry to the high school. Contact Katie Fleming at katie (at) sanjuans.org or 378-2319 if you would like to ride on the shuttle.

This is not a political issue and the meeting is not political in nature. Anyone – non-profits, other organizations, private citizens and our local government agencies can raise legitimate questions and concerns about how the project may affect their work, their lives, the environment and the economy.

This hearing is our chance to ask that specific impacts be studied and included in the GPT Environmental Impact Statement. Click here to learn more about crafting an effective comment. To see the hearing format, click here.

Our goal is to have 250 attend on Saturday. Bring your family, your friends, your colleagues and be counted. This is a watershed moment. Wear red for solidarity. Let’s protect the Salish Sea from coal export!

Thank you for all your efforts,
Katie

P.S. If you can’t make it to the November 3rd hearing, you can submit written comments here.

It was fun to check out the costumes around the bar scene on Saturday for Halloween…we visited Haley’s, The Rumor Mill, Herb’s Tavern, The Legion, and The Cask & Schooner (sorry, my battery was dead when we dropped by the Pearl), and found all kinds of creative dress, from body paint to fairies to cavemen to pirates to ENTIRE CHICKENS.

Here’s a little vid that includes my pictures & some from Tamara Weaver’s portfolio as well – see what you think:

Heading into November….

Posted November 1, 2012 at 7:37 am by

Great to see all the elementary school kids in the annual costume parade yesterday downtown – the rain held off just for that spot in the day, the way it does…..

Isn’t it great to have the early morning light from the bright moon behind the clouds, no matter how rainy the rest of the day is? Oh, you were asleep then? (me, too, mostly….) Let’s take a look around:

• You know that daylight saving time is this weekend, right? I love the extra hour in the evening, and real early morning light….

+++++++

• So proud of our island grads – Arielle Mancuso is still in Rwanda. I asked her what she’s doing: “I’m doing a third year as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Now, I am working to mainstream malaria in the Peace Corps program, with the President’s Malaria Initiative and the Rwanda Family Health Project.”

++++++++

Dropped by the post office yesterday to see Smokey the Bear (Scott) and The Owl (Yvonne) for Halloween….

++++++++

• What better day than the Day of the Dead for Tia’s Tacos to have their grand opening – they’re located right across from the school district building. It’s from 11am to 6pm…tell ’em you read about it in the Update! Everyone who has told me in the past month that they’ve eaten there tells me they love it….see (and taste!) for yourself!

++++++

• The FHHS football team (5-4) heads for Life Christian High for a one pm game Saturday to get the playoffs underway….the game will be played at Clover Park High in Lakewood, in you’re mapquest’ing how to get there….

Good to catch up with Natalie Chevalier at the parade (love the matching outfits!)…..she’s expecting for January & she makes a great mom….

Seen him?

• Have you seen Beth’s cat? Drop her a note at [email protected] if you do:

Maybe your readers have seen my cat. He is a handsome neutered male tabby, mostly grey and white with some brown and black. He’s got white socks and pink pads. He was wearing a reflective collar with turquoise blue fabric when he was last seen around Three Corner Lake Road and Egg Lake Road a couple of weeks ago. His sister really misses him, as do we.

++++++++++

• Magic: Tuesday morning I was helping someone with their computer over the phone:

Me:  “Ok, in the bottom left hand side of the screen, can you see the ‘OK’ button displayed?”

Customer:  “Wow ! How can you see my screen from there?”

Here’s the report from Stillpoint School: “Hi! Happy Halloween!! We hope you had an outstanding October. We wanted to share these pictures with you from our Halloween Parade this morning! Our school was invited to a Halloween celebration at the LifeCare Center, so we walked there and had a blast! We hope you have a hauntingly happy afternoon. 🙂

• I’ve heard Shann talk in different settings & she always lights a light in folks’ minds & hearts when she does….tonight she’s at Lavendera Massage Center (next to the Little Store) at 6:30….here’s the scoop:

Educator and writer Shann Weston will speak about the ‘third chapter of life’ using a model from the yoga tradition, one rich with possiblity.  Here we play four distinct roles as the drama of life unfolds: student, householder, forest dweller and renunciate.

This is a time that needs the work of the ‘forest dwellers, a title much more compelling than ‘retired’. come and explore how this concept can be used to enrich your own life.

Here on San Juan Island this Friday: Carolyn Mark & the New Best Friends

Posted November 1, 2012 at 12:03 am by

Carolyn Mark

This is cool to have someone of this caliber coming to our little island – Carolyn Mark is here at The Rumor Mill on Friday! Here’s more from Chris Minney:

Friday, November 2, Friday Harbor welcomes Carolyn Mark and the New Best Friends, with special guest Hank Pine, starting at 8pm.

Carolyn Mark is preparing to release her 8th full-length record (9th if you count her album with Neko Case as The Corn Sisters, 10th if you include her compilation soundtrack for Robert Altman’s film, “Nashville”). Her new album will be called The Queen of Vancouver Island and released on September 18th, 2012 on her longtime label, Mint Records. Carolyn’s last release, Let’s Just Stay Here, that she co-wrote with NQ Arbuckle, was nominated for a Juno award and this will be the official follow-up.

Around the island…..

Posted October 31, 2012 at 7:48 am by

The weather’s changes were apparent in the cloud cover on Monday afternoon, over the Port of Friday Harbor when Josie & I took a walk….I love the Seattle weatherguy’s forecast: Partly cloudy with some clearing & scattered showers. Kinda covers it. (Click on the photo to enbiggen it….. 🙂

Lots of things going on this Halloween morning…check it out:

• You went to see Argo at the movies (it plays two more days – tonight & Thursday – I thought it was really well done)…did you know that two of the six hostages that escaped live in Anacortes? And they’re still there….here’s the scoop. (Don’t miss it!)

+++++

• I heard that the reading of Frankenstein at the Community Theatre was great fun over the weekend…they’re doing it again tonight at 7:30pm. The people who ssaw it said it was great, including Betsy Wingren:

The Reader’s Theatre production of Frankenstein was very entertaining.  It’s got great acting, a spooky set, costumes, and blocking–not as “bare bones” as one might expect for Reader’s Theatre.  It’s not a kid’s show, but a wonderful offering for adults.  Did anyone mention that it’s free-of-cost?  (although contributions are accepted…)

+++++++

The island misses Jim Cumming, who passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Friday…gonna miss his smile & giving spirit. I’ll post more lore later, as it comes in….

+++++++

• County Republican Party Chair Michelle Loftus tells me there are three showings:

The Friday Harbor Palace Theater will present the movie “2016 Obama’s America” for three show times on Sunday, November 4. The theater has brought in new digital equipment for this movie. Call 360-370-5666 or 360-378-3578 for show times.

+++++

• Jennifer Allen at the Fairgrounds tells me there’s a show tonight:

The Good Husbands will be playing Halloween night at the SJC Fairgrounds.  The venue is for all ages, $10.00 cover at the door, doors open at 8:00pm, music to start at 8:30pm.

+++++

Just in time for Halloween….I’m sure glad that The Bean has that camera on the ferry coming & going, so you don’t have to rush (or maybe you do!) to catch the next boat. On Sunday, this spider swung by, across the camera lens…the spider (outside) was gone in five minutes….photo by Update Wildlife Photographer Josie Byington.

• There’s good eating ahead – here’s more from Stephanie:

Jandira

• Jandira has a special presentation this Friday:

Friday, November 2 at 6:30 pm
Introduction to Akashic Records
San Juan Island Library meeting room, free.

Jandira Shelley, an Akashic Records consultant who was trained by Akashic Records International, explains “the Akashic Records, a living, ever-expanding energy field, collects and records each individual soul’s journey from inception forward to current life and into the projected future. The Akashic Records constantly up-date and record every thought, word, emotion and deed generated by our life experiences.

If your passion is to delve within the inner recesses of your soul to discover previously unknown aspects about yourself, then learning about what it means to ‘open’ to the insight and sacred wisdom of your Akashic Records could be the next step in your spiritual evolution.”

During this program, Jandira Shelley will define the Akashic Records and describe how she has used the Records to inform her daily decisions, discover and release self-sabotaging patterns, and free herself of fears, insecurities and judgments.  Volunteers from the audience will participate in demonstrating an actual Akashic Records group reading. Registration is encouraged: 378-2798.

Dear Ian,

As a parent and Saint David’s Day School board member, I have gotten too busy for my own good as of late: soccer dad, Community Theatre projects, and involvement in many of the other community organizations we know and love.  And in so doing, so being, one of the necessary things that I have neglected to do earlier this fall is extend our heartfelt thanks to both the contributors as well as  (and particularly) the San Juan Island Community Foundation and their innovative on-line matching program.

Saint David’s Day School was one of several organizations that were selected as Fair Matching Grant participants and raised close to $1000.00 from generous community contributors during the County Fair through the San Juan Island Community Foundation booth and web presence.

The San Juan Island Community Foundation matched those monies with 50% grant of close to $500.00 from their own Foundation Endowment Fund, to fully fund our requested grant of $1,497.46, for which we are very thankful. Continue Reading

There’s a tsunami advisory (not warning) for this area….but let’s keep an eye on it.

The EDC thanks the San Juan Island Library for hosting this event.  We also thank San Juan County, the Town of Friday Harbor, the Port of Friday Harbor and the Port of Lopez for supporting our Business Education Series.

The San Juan County Economic Development Council’s Business Education Series was created by the EDC in response to concerns from local business owners and overall increased demand from new businesses.  This series will present a variety of business topics designed for both those opening a new business or those wanting to take their business to the next level.

The San Juan County Economic Development Council (EDC) strives to strengthen and diversify the economy of San Juan County.  We believe a strong economy builds a strong community.   The EDC works to build an environment that helps business owners create jobs.  We serve business:  linking organizations and resources, providing valuable information, rendering assistance and advocating for an improved island business environment.
