Today on the island….

Posted October 26, 2012 at 9:19 am by

Last week San Juan Historical Museum’s Director Kevin Loftus directed a tour with 36 visiting Road Scholar participants around the grounds, ending up in the Living Lesson’s schoolhouse, in which local kids dress up & go through a school day like it’s 1896….

Let’s check to see what’s up….

• The ferry terminal is open to vehicles on Orcas today, after being closed most of the week – here’s the scoop from WSF:

The Orcas Island Terminal will open to vehicles and take traffic beginning with the 10:35 a.m. departure from Anacortes. The 11:35 a.m. departure from Friday Harbor will take vehicles to Orcas. The 12:10 p.m. departure from Orcas to Anacortes and the 12:25 p.m. Orcas/Interisland departure, and all departures following, will carry vehicles as well.

++++++

• We’re all keeping an eye on that storm on the east coast – it’s heading north this morning….

+++++++

The cement is nearly dry on the Library’s new drop box outside the front of the Library – this was a high priority from the community survey. Check it out! It’s now easier than ever to return your books & videos!

• Have you voted yet? Don’t put it off!

Next Wednesday!

• This has become an annual tradition on the island, to get away from the sometimes-scariness of the holiday….here’s more from Kris Brown:

Join us for HarvestFest 2012, October 31 from 5:30 to 7:30p.m. at Friday Harbor Elementary School. This safe, kid-friendly, family-oriented alternative for toddlers, preschool & elementary age children to experience the fun of trick-or-treating without the crowded streets & scary costumes of older kids. Everything is free and open to children up through sixth grade and their parents.

This year we have new features including glutten-free and healthy snacks and four new games: mini-golf, pin the face on the pumpkin, pumpkin bowling and a football toss. Plus there are hotdogs, popcorn and pie for those coming right from work.

Started as a Harvest party more than 25 years ago by Islands Community Church, we have moved to town with the help of volunteers from Calvary Chapel San Juan Island, Christ the King Community Church, Paideia Classical School and Friday Harbor Presbyterian. Check out all the details, or sign up to help at www.harvestfestfh.org.

Report: The regatta was great!

Posted October 24, 2012 at 6:29 am by

In the regatta: Boats in picture left to right: Howard Lewis in “Marianna” (previously Fred Hoeppner’s boat), Lloyd Bacon in “Corrida” and John Manning in “Bellwether.” Photo by  Jayne Hemmerich.

The regatta was a couple of weekends ago, and it went well – here’s more from Ron DiCristina (thanks, Ron!):

Friday Harbor Sailing Club’s sixth annual Fred Hoeppner (formally Mitchell Bay) International Regatta was held October 13-14, 2012 out on the west side of San Juan Island.

This year, it was an exciting two day race that involved seven sailboats, skippers and crews who competed in five different races over the weekend under varying conditions.  Race areas were in and around Haro Strait including Mosquito Pass, Low Island, Kelp Reef and back with a short race southwest of Henry Island.

Congratulations to the top three final positions in PHRF Class: Dino Pick in “Scarlett de Harro”, John Manning in “Bellwether” and Lloyd Bacon in “Corrida”.  The next major sailing event will be the 25th anniversary of the Round the County (RTC) Race on November 10 and 11.  Friday Harbor Sailing Club will again help Orcas Island Yacht Club co-host the event.  Racers will sail clockwise around the county, starting at Lydia Shoal on the southeast side of Orcas Island, and end the night just off Mitchell Bay.  They will start again the next morning from Pearl Island, and head outside of Stuart and Waldron Islands on the way back to Lydia Shoal. RTC is a regional race and it is BIG.

A record 72 sailboats are registered thus far with upwards of 500 crew members involved.

To register for RTC contact Betsy Wareham 360-376-2314. Friday Harbor Sailing Club is a non-profit organization for both sailors and power boaters.  Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month, 5:45pm at the Friday Harbor Grange. All interested boaters are welcome to the potluck dinner/meeting.

The ninjas are coming! It’s this Sunday at the Community Theatre!

Posted October 24, 2012 at 6:21 am by

Ninjas on stage!

Remember Pat & Stella who used to work with Zip San Juan? They just saw this show a couple of weeks ago on Whidbey Island, and said it was awesome & not to miss it. Here’s the scoop from Jan Bollwinkel-Smith:

Ancient mystics, kung-faux ninjas and acrobats join together for a one-of-a-kind show on the Whittier stage THIS Sunday, October 28 at 5:00 pm.

The Jacket is the latest concoction from Port Townsend’s multi-talented quartet, NANDA. The group combines comedy, juggling, acrobatics, martial arts, video, music, dance and pop-culture referencesinto a live action show for children and adults. NANDA’s website introduction to The Jacket describes its theme:

“In the time before the sun ancient mystical people craft a magical jacket of incredible power. The awesome forces imbued into the garment plunge the harmonic balance of the world into chaos….”

NANDA, formed in 2004, combines the world of performance art with a variety of live entertainment experimentation. The Jacket is the group’s first full-length, independently-produced live theater show.

In addition to The Jacket performance, the group will present an outreach program to Friday Harbor Middle School thanks to a generous grant from the San Juan Island Community Foundation.

Workshop: Inner Journey Adventure for Teen Girls, with Deb Langhans

Posted October 24, 2012 at 6:16 am by

Deb

Since this Friday, 10/26, is the deadline for registering for the Inner Journey Adventure for Teen Girls workshop, I figured I’d better find out more about for you – here’s more about what it’s all about:

Q. Hey, Deb! I know you’ll be offering the first “Inner Journey Adventure for Teen Girls” on Sunday, November 4th.  (I posted your flyer on the Update last week.)  How did this workshop come about?

A. When the daughter of one of my Inner Journey Collage workshop mothers expressed interest in her mom’s collage, it seemed a good time to create something relevant for adolescent girls in our community.  Actually, a few of my island wholistic health/coaching clients are  teenage girls, so I’m aware of some of their typical issues, e.g., self-esteem, positive body image, perfectionism…

Q. Have you just described the new workshop curriculum?

D: Those issues represent just the beginning. Participants will also be exploring what brings joy & meaning & how they might use their passions as emerging adults.  The final piece will be creating a specific collage card & using a special process to access their inner wisdom & discover what information their unconscious minds have for them.

Q. Sounds very intriguing. Is registration still open?

A: Yes, but there are only a few slots remaining & registration closes this Friday, 10/26.  So I hope parents & daughters will not procrastinate too long if they’re interested in this workshop.

Q. Is there anything else you’d like islanders to know?

A. Other than being excited about working with our terrific teen girls, I’d like our community to know how much I appreciate the enthusiasm & support already expressed about this workshop–A recent example: Last Thursday, S-Club (the high school version of Soroptimists)–& specifically Melanie Cope, Debbi Staehlin, & Isabel Gabriel–conducted a fundraiser at Marketplace to begin creating a scholarship fund for girls needing financial assistance for attending this workshop–In just 1-1/2 hours, our generous community contributed enough for two full scholarships!

I’ve known Deb for a few years now, and she’s a great reflexologist who has a natural way with figuring out what a person needs to grow, as well. Give her a call and check in – you’ll be glad you did!

• It’s great to hear from our friends at the Preservation Trust about what they’ve been up to:

We have some exciting news to report to you. Today we closed on a new land acquisition that will add more than 140 acres to Turtleback Mountain Preserve on Orcas Island and permanently protect the entire turtle-shaped ridgeline of the mountain.

The 30-acre “head” of the turtle, which was donated to the San Juan Preservation Trust in 1990, had been separated from Turtleback Mountain Preserve by a privately-held 111-acre property. The owners had begun to prepare this larger property for residential development when they learned of the Preservation Trust’s interest. After many months of negotiation, the parties agreed upon a purchase price of $1.0 million.

With this acquisition, the Turtleback Mountain Preserve will expand to include this new property and the 30-acre turtle’s head, which has stunning 360-degree views of surrounding islands. This connection will allow us to build a trail from Turtleback to Turtlehead, creating a new day hike to a premier destination that has – until now – been inaccessible to the public.

With $990,000 already committed towards the campaign’s $1.15 million goal, the Preservation Trust is now reaching out to the local island community and visitors that use the Turtleback trail system to raise the remaining $160,000.

To read more about this project and the fundraising effort that will make it possible, please visit our website.

The Peace of Wild Things

Posted October 22, 2012 at 6:30 am by

As the colors of the season turn, you can feel it coming…the time of the slower seasons ahead. (This was on the west side…)

The Peace of Wild Things
by Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

These are the people who make the magic happen at the San Juan Pasta Company (well most of them anyway – I guess one of them was in California this week). On the left is Mary Willallen, sorting and packaging fresh pasta from an earlier production run; center is Mike Martin, packaging and assisting the current ravioli run; and on the right is Angel Michaels, operating the Ravioli press as it churns out today’s batch of Butternut Squash Ravioli.

San Juan Island….all around….

Checking in with you….let’s see what’s up:

This weekend!

• The Chameleons have two shows this weekend! They report:

Come on out and join The Chameleons for two hot shows at Herb’s this weekend.

We’ll be rocking the house with some hot new tunes on Friday and Saturday nights- show starts around 9 or 9:30- let’s get this party started!

Andy & Tom

They’re calling it the Clash of the Chili Titans: On November 9th at 6pm: A benefit for San Juan Soccer:

Chef Andy and Coach Tommy are going head to head in a chili cook-off. Andy will be defending his 2012 Brickworks title. It’s Detroit vs. Cincinnati. $10 for adults and $5 for kids (12 and under).

And don’t worry–we’ve got you vegetarians covered as well! Come one come all!

•  I went to the movie at the Grange last night about GMO (genetically modifed organisms) food, and it was helpful to add to my store of information about why we have a huge problem on our hands (and in our bodies.)

Time to get on board….

Forty years ago, folks were smoking cigarettes like there was no tomorrow & now we have a more balanced look at what they do to destroy lives & lungs….I’m pretty sure in a couple of decades we’ll be saying, “GMO food….what were we thinking?”

There are good reasons most of Europe bans it…..

Here’s what Krispi Staude said after last night’s movie:

Tonight we went to a showing of a movie about GMO’s and what they are doing to people. They have only been on our radar for 20 years or so… and we have many more cancers, allergies, autism, auto-immune conditions, rashes, stomach problems and many other unpleasant conditions. The chemical company Monsanto is lying to us and a previous CEO of Monsanto is now head of the FDA. Scary!!

Please look into this issue and vote YES on the local Initiative 2012-4 for a GMO-free San Juan Islands.

Amber

• It was fun to catch up with Amber Garcia the other day (we were visiting at The Bean, one of the places in town you can get her gluten-free cookies & baked goods!). You’ll get the idea about what she means by “gluten-free gluttony” when you check out her website – here’s what she says:

I have always loved to cook and bake. I am well known with my family and friends for my tasty treats. Whenever there is a celebration, my dish is an anticipated one.

A couple years ago, I found out I had a gluten sensitivity. This was heartbreaking seeing how all I liked to do was bake gluten filled foods. I spent lots of time and money at the grocery store on items that tasted like cardboard.

Convinced there had to be a way to still enjoy the treats I loved, I decided to read up on gluten alternatives and began to experiment. I loved to bring dishes and treats to potlucks and hide the fact it was gluten free. After everyone had eaten, I would reveal the secret and everyone would be shocked!

I had thought that baking gluten free was just a hobby, until I found out my son also had a sensitivity to gluten. I wanted him to be able to enjoy the stuff that I was able to when I was growing up. At that moment I decided it was time to share my baking talent with the community-at-large. Just because you have a food allergy doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice taste.

Let Carmel Sun Bake Shop provide you with the baked goods you’ve been missing and craving. No one should go without treats!

We specialize in gluten free gluttony 🙂
