Posted May 11, 2012 at 12:01 am by

Got this update from FHHS athletic director Rod Turnbull on Thursday – Go Wolverines!:

Lynden Christian lost their game against Nooksack yesterday, so we do not have to play at Coupeville today.  We move on to the double elimination round of the District tournament as the #2 seed and will play Lynden Christian at 12:00 on Saturday, and then again at 2:00 win or lose.

All games will be played at Janicki Fields in Sedro Woolley.

Report the strandings when you see them….

Posted May 10, 2012 at 2:05 am by

Here’s more from Amy at the Stranding Network:

If you see them, report them!

The Whale Museum’s Marine Mammal Stranding Network reports that there have been an unusually large number of harbor porpoise strandings since May 2. Amy Traxler, Coordinator of the Network, states that six carcasses have washed up on Lopez and San Juan since that time, with a total of nine carcasses since April 1.  “It’s common to have a few porpoises wash up in the springtime, but numbers like this in such a short time are very unusual.  Unfortunately, the eagles and vultures have been beating us to these carcasses so we’ve only been able to collect two for a necropsy.”

She requests that if you come across a carcass to contact the Stranding Network as soon as possible.  It would also be very helpful if you could cover the carcass with something – a tarp, an old towel, even a pile of driftwood .   “The best way to find out what’s going on is through a necropsy so helping to preserve the carcass until a responder can get there is very important.”

To report a stranding, call the Network number at 800-562-8832.  Thank you!!!

“The Sound of Music” opens this week at the Community Theatre

Captain Von Trapp (George Iliff) calls his family to attention - from left, Gretl (Lucy Marinkovich), Marta (Else Arendt), Brigitta (Joely Loucks), Kurt (Ryan Crawford), Louisa (Courtney Bell), Friedrich (Matthew Stepita), and Liesl (Julie Hagn.)

I think this is one show you’ll be hearing about for a long time. I got to see the dress rehearsal, and it has got everything you go to a musical for….good music, strong acting, perfect costuming, a wonderful set, and a well-paced show that you’re going to tell your friends they should go see (kinda like I’m doing with you, now).

Jill Urbach as Maria delivers the goods – she redefines one of the most famous & well-known characters on her own terms & delivers a powerful performance that will have you smiling & humming the songs as you leave the theater. And you’ll be proud of our poised, pitch-perfect delightful & charming kids – supported by the orchestra, you’ll believe this really is the famous Von Trapp Family Singers.

Get your tickets now…you’ll be glad you did.

Here’s more from the press release by Jan Bollwinkel-Smith, along with a cast list, so you know who among your friends is in the show:

The hills are ALIVE…Starting Thursday!

The Sound of Music

After a winter and spring of humming doe, a deer, a female deer in anticipation of SJCT’s spring musical, islanders can now relax and watch the story of Maria and the Von Trapps unfold on the Whittier stage.

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s The Sound of Music opens THIS Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 pm in the Whittier Theatre.

Certainly one of the most beloved musicals of all time, the play features more than 40 island actors and actresses*, directed by SJCT’s executive director Merritt Olsen. “One of the joys of directing a musical is that the spirit of collaboration is heightened,” said Olsen. “I’m called the director, but I’m not a set or costume designer. I’m not a choreographer or a musician. Without ‘specialists’ working with me to conceive and execute this production, The Sound of Music would be in big trouble.”

In addition to music director Jim Collado and assistant director Margaret Hall, vocal coach Carol Hooper; choreographer Lisa Duke; costume designer Anita Welch; set designer Brad Welch; properties coordinator Ted Soares and stage manager Ellen Roberts; plus a large crew of other volunteers will assist Merritt in bringing the melodious and romantic story of Maria and Captain Von Trapp to life in Friday Harbor.

Buy Now on line! or Box Office hours are 11 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Friday and 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday.

• Here’s the spring playoff update for Friday Harbor High, from FHHS Athletic Director Rod Turnbull:

Our spring teams are quickly approaching the District 1 playoff portion of their seasons.   The District 1 Tournament is used to determine the seeding of the 1A teams located in District 1.  There are six 1A teams in District 1, (with the exception of tennis, baseball & fastpitch), but they play in 3 different leagues.  To determine which teams move forward to the Tri-District tournament, we hold a sub-district tournament.

While the tournaments look different logistically, because of the sport involved, the outcome is the same.  The District 1 (sub-district) tournament determines the number of teams and the order for which they move on to the Tri-District tournament.

Below is an update of each fall team’s playoff outline.

  • Girls Fastpitch – Our girls fastpitch team has won the Northwest 1A/2B League and is 1 and 2 against 1A Northwest conference opponents. Both situations are used for seeding into the District 1 tournament. Friday Harbor will enter as NW#2, or #4 seed, depending upon the outcome of the Lynden Christian / Nooksack game on 5/9.  A win by Nooksack, and FH is the #2 seed and will begin District play on Saturday, 5/12 vs Lynden Christian.  If Lynden Christian wins, FH will play Coupeville on 5/10 as the #4 seed. For more information including tournament brackets, visit the District 1 website at  www.nwdist1.com or our league website at www.nw1a2bathletics.com
  • Girls Tennis –Our girls tennis team will travel to the District 1 tournament at Coupeville on May 11. Two singles teams and two doubles teams will be competing for two berths to the Tri-District Tournament that begins on May 14 with a play in game, with the full tournament beginning on May 17.  For more information including tournament brackets, visit the District 1 website at www.nwdist1.com on our league website at www.nw1a2bathletics.com
  • Baseball –Our baseball team finished the District 1 tournament this past Saturday as the  #2 seed to the Tri- district tournament.  They earned the right to host a home playoff game of Wednesday, 5/9.  They will be host the District 2 #2 seed Cedar Park Christian of Bothel, at 4:30pm at Hartman Field. Win or lose, the Wolverines will play again on Saturday for the right to advance to the regional state playoffs.  For more information including tournament brackets, visit the District 1 website at www.nwdist1.com on our league website at www.nw1a2bathletics.com .
  • Boys Soccer –  Our soccer team was defeated by Lynden Christian 2-0 on Wednesday, May 2.  This loss brought their season to an end.
  • Boys & Girls Golf – The golf team will begin post season play on Thursday, May 10 at the District 1 Tournament being held at North Bellingham Golf Club. For more information including tournament brackets, visit the District 1 website at www.nwdist1.com
  • Boys & Girls Track – Our track team will head to Lynden Christian on Wednesday, May 9, and Friday, May 11 to compete in the District 1 Track meet.  Here the top to competitors and the five next best times/performances from District1 will move on to the Tri-District meet beginning on May 17 at Kings High School.  For more information including tournament brackets, visit the District 1 website at www.nwdist1.com

Dana Lyons is the singer/songwriter best known for his dynamic performances and outrageous hit songs “Cows With Guns,” “RV” and “Ride The Lawn.” A global radio and web hit, “Cows With Guns” was #1 for the year on Dr. Demento, #2 on the Australian Country charts, #1 in Seattle and spent six months on the Irish Top 40.

Bringing together a mix of comedy, ballads and love songs, Dana’s sharp wit and beautiful voice have him performing at concert halls, festivals, conventions, fundraisers and universities across the US and around the world. Dana’s music style includes a bit of everything; his biggest radio hit, “Cows With Guns,” receives crossover radio play on country, rock, alternative, community, college and oldies radio stations worldwide. He has eight releases to date, including his latest, Three Legged Coyote, released in November 2009.

Dana has toured in 46 of the 50 American states, around the East Coast of Australia and across Ireland, England, New Zealand, Mexico, Kazahkstan and Siberia. Dana performs at festivals ranging from Farm Aid with Willie Nelson and Neil Young to the Harley Davidson Festival in Sturgis, South Dakota where he shared the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steppenwolf, Nazareth and Blue Oyster Cult. His policy of “I’ll play anywhere once” has landed Dana gigs on a tropical island in the Great Barrier reef of Australia, an Irish Pub in Beijing and the Hanford Nuclear Waste Dump in his home state of Washington.

Two of Dana’s songs have been made into award-winning illustrated books: Cows With Guns, published by Penguin (winner of the Bullitzer Prize), and The Tree, published by Illumination Arts. The Tree was endorsed by Dr. Jane Goodall, has forwards by Pete Seeger and Julia Butterfly Hill and has won numerous awards.

Dana’s songs have been re-recorded by many artists, but perhaps his highest honor as a songwriter came when Pete Seeger called him to get the music for Dana’s song “I am an Animal.” Dana has shared the stage with many notable performers including Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Pete Sears of Jefferson Starship, Stephen Stills, River Phoenix, Nickel Creek, Country Joe McDonald, Utah Phillips and John Trudell.

Dana was born in Kingston, New York. He graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He lives in a nice garage in Bellingham, Washington, with his cat Oliver. His astrological sign is Taurus.

The big fire was ten years ago…..

Posted May 8, 2012 at 11:18 pm by

Friday Harbor Grocery in flames: May 9, 2002. (Photo by Tim Dustrude for the Update)

It was a surreal thing – to see a big chunk of the town you love going up in flames.

On Thursday, May 9th, back in 2002, I had just taken my son to his job after school & then run back to the house when I got a call from a friend at the Port: “Come now – the town’s on fire.”

Tim Dustrude was working with me at By Design at that time, and we grabbed a camera (here are his photos from the afternoon, with the last photos of the town the way it used to be) & went downtown, where we saw the beginnings of the fire which would consume most of the block on First Street & its shops, and take all night to put out.

The Seattle Times online edition featured a photo by Tim just an hour after the fire was reported...click here for a larger version.

Fire engines came from all over this island, and from the other islands to keep a steady stream of water suppressing the flames. Afternoon baseball games were continued at the elementary field, as people watched the plume from town grow & grow from there & different parts of the island. Our police & fire folks coordinated the response & worked together, both on the fire & keeping people safe – no one was hurt, and the crowds stayed a safe distance away.

In a number of ways, we were lucky. The fire was in the afternoon, which meant it received a quick response, and it was a calm day. A windy day (or worse, early morning with no emergency response) would have meant flaming debris carried to other parts of our wooden structures.

Here’s the account from the Update that I posted that day & the next day, with photos.

Early the next morning, my sons & I went to see the smoldering remains of the block in the just-rising morning sun.

When it was over, the block was gone, with The Trading Company & China Pearl both still standing & undamaged as bookends to the damage (firewalls really work!)

Landmark Friday Harbor Grocery (owned at that time by Ray Bigler) was known as Whitey’s since the 1960’s – gone. The flower shop, the Hungry Clam, The Mystical Mermaid, and the gift shop – all gone, and all since resurrected. The inspiring resilience of islanders: Lisa & Julie from the flower shop told me that fiery afternoon that they would still somehow deliver all the Mother’s Day orders that coming Sunday…and they did.

The area was cleared in time for the Fourth of July parade in 2002 - click on the photo for a bigger version - photo by Tim Dustrude, shot from the Coldwell Banker second floor.)

A couple of months later, when the ash & debris had been removed & the area cleaned up, the question remained – what to do with the now-huge hole in town. If you’ve been downtown, you know the answer – Gordy & Lori Peterson built the present downtown center & opened it in the late spring of 2004 (here’s a bit about that, from the Update in May ’04, as the Mystical Mermaid re-opened.)

It’s hard to believe that was a decade ago – it will remain a defining moment for islanders who witnessed it, not just of the destruction, but of the passion of islanders to rebuild & recover, and to tap that pioneer spirit that still burns here.

The Self-Made Myth: and the Truth About How Government Helps Individuals and Businesses Succeed
by Brian Miller and Mike Lapham

Griffin Bay Bookstore and the San Juan Island Library are co-sponsoring a timely event, a book talk at Griffin Bay Bookstore with authors Brian Miller and Mike Lapham, both with United for a Fair Economy (UFE), on Thursday night, May 10, 7:00 pm.

In The Self-Made Myth Brian Miller and Mike Lapham reveal the hidden but very crucial role government and society have played in the success of America’s richest individuals and business leaders. Along the way they also shatter the idea perpetuated by some of them that they worked their way to wealth all on their own. They show how pronouncements of being “self-made” do not show an honest and balanced understanding of success, instead, they are a myth.

Miller and Lapham present the facts that many fail to consider, shedding light on how individual success is reliant upon many external factors. Among them, the authors emphasize the role of public education, research and development grants, social services, roads and highways, and laws and regulations that establish a stable business environment.

As the authors note, how citizens view the creation of wealth and individual success is critical because it shapes choices on taxes, regulations, public investments in schools and infrastructure, CEO pay, and more. In a difficult economic time, also accompanied by political stalemates, it is more important than ever that the self-made myth be replaced by a more clear-eyed, realistic, balanced, and truthful understanding of what constitutes success in the world of business, great wealth, and entrepreneurship.

About the Authors

Brian Miller has served as executive director of United for a Fair Economy (UFE) since 2009, drawing on nearly 20 years of experience as a community organizer, coalition leader, media spokesperson, writer, researcher, and nonprofit director.

Mike Lapham is the project director and co-founder of UFE’s Responsible Wealth project, a network of business leaders and wealthy individuals advocating for more progressive taxation. In addition to directing the program, Lapham is also a member, having inherited stock in his family’s paper mill in upstate New York.

Many Accolades for The Self-Made Myth

“It is critical to change the conversation about how wealth is created, who creates it, and the role of government, and this book does that effectively and importantly. And it couldn’t be more timely.” –Bill Gates Sr.

“This book challenges a central myth that underlies today’s anti-government rhetoric: that an individual’s success is the result of gumption and hard work alone. Miller and Lapham clearly show that person success is closely tied to the supports society provides. Must read for all who want to get our nation back on track.”  –Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor

Charmian Carr, “Liesl” in the film The Sound of Music, at Griffin Bay Bookstore
Friday afternoon, May 11, 2:00pm

Charmian Carr (Liesl in the movie Sound of Music)

Griffin Bay Bookstore is hosting a very special event on Friday afternoon, May 11, 2:00 pm with Charmian Carr, who starred as “Liesl” in what is considered the most beloved film musical of all time, The Sound of Music. This special event will be held in conjunction with the opening of The Sound of Music at the San Juan Community Theatre.

Be sure to attend this memorable occasion and meet Ms. Carr and hear her talk about the just-released book and DVD, The Sound of Music Family Scrapbook, by Fred Benson.  This book is bound to enthrall the musical’s aficionados. Through personal photographs, memorabilia, and home movies, the actors who starred as the von Trapp children, tell their inside story of making The Sound of Music.  Ms. Carr will be available to autograph copies of the book.

In early 2000, Ms. Carr co-authored a book detailing her experiences making the movie and living her life as Forever Liesl, and in 2001, her second book, Letters to Liesl was published.  Copies of her first book will also be on hand at the event.  As she has often said, “I am honored to have played a part in telling the von Trapp family’s story on screen, and I cherish my memories of those days when we were working on the movie in Salzburg and Los Angeles. Filming in Salzburg, Austria, was like being in a fairy tale.”  This is your chance to hear first-hand accounts of an enchanted time.

The Sound of Music Family Scrapbook, by Fred Benson

The Sound of Music has captivated several generations, as over the years, many parents have shared the magic of this wonderful movie with their children. Seven very special children experienced The Sound of Music firsthand: the seven young actors cast as the von Trapp children. Now, for the first time, they tell their stories about making this celebrated film, from their auditions to rehearsals in Los Angeles to an incredible spring and summer in Salzburg, Austria. What was it like to work with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer? How did they learn the songs and dances for the musical numbers? Who almost drowned when the boat tipped over? What was it like to attend the gala Hollywood premiere? What were their lives like after starring in this legendary movie? And how did they become a family in real life, remaining as close as any brothers and sisters for the last 45 years?

The answers are revealed at last and as a bonus, they have collected their never-before-seen own home movie footage on a brand-new DVD. It is included here, along with personal cherished memorabilia, such as letters sent home to their families from Europe, a page from the script with edits written in the margin, and a ticket to the premiere. For anyone who is thrilled by the sight of Julie Andrews spinning around on top of a mountain, or who spontaneously bursts out singing “Do-Re-Mi,” this captivating behind-the-scenes inside story is a must read.

Passing: Remembering Ryan Ochoa

Remembering Ryan: This is a photo I took when he & his brother Richie played for the Mudsharks baseball team, back in fifth grade. It was easy to get a smile from Ryan, especially after he'd hit a home run....

Just got this note from Ryan’s family, and I found a picture from years ago – hope you can make it:

The Parents of Ryan Nolan Ochoa (1992 ~ 2012) invite you, our family, friends and community to join us in a Celebration of Life on Thursday May 10 at 1:00 pm at the Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church (445 Spring Street in Friday Harbor). We welcome all who care to join us.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at Islanders Bank.
