Around the island, plus some dog news….

Jacob

I think Jack (above) may be Judith Carter's best friend, and so he's posing with sacks of bird seed at his & her shop, The Barking Bird (now you know why it's called that...!) Drop by & say hey - you'll love what they've done to the store!

I have “Who Let The Dogs Out? playing, to kinda set the mood…

•  Val Curtis tells me: “Eric Ellison, has been missing his best friend, Jacob, a dear black lab with grey muzzle and belly, since Saturday. Please call (370-5208) or e-mail Eric at [email protected] if you see Jacob anywhere. 85 lbs. black collar with rabies tag.

+++++++++++++++

• Meanwhile, my friend Jack Gibson tells me he’d love to find someone to take in his sweet dog, Zoey…here’s more from Jack, about Zoey:

Zoey is an 8 year old spayed female Border Collie. All shots current.  Free to good home.  I have future commitments off island and will be unable to care for Zoey.  Zoey is a well behaved high energy dog.  Needs exercise and place to run. write me at warjack44 (at) gmail or call 378-4178 if you’d like to meet her! You’ll love her!

Zoey....looking for a home...

• One of the stronger Friday Harbor Wolverine basketball squads in a few years continues to roll along – the guys thumped Shoreline Christian (5-5) at their place 44-36 on Tuesday night to run their record to 8-1 (5-0 in league) this year.

Meanwhile, our talented girls beat SC 48-40 to run their season record to 7-1. Both teams are fun to watch, and are making a bit of a statement in the first half of the season. Get down to see ’em.

In other news…have you seen those nice writeups about Serendipity Bookstore on Yelp? I love it when people think what we’re doing here is cool, and Dilys & Carol do it well – here’s the reviews, and here’s one of ’em:

The name is eerily true. Every time I step into this place, I find some treasure that is so perfect at that moment, yet I’d never heard of it before. If you’re not ready for such magic, the staff are very well-informed about what might appear to be unmanageable heaps of books sprawling through a labyrinth of rooms. It’s all on their computer, and it’s all available online.

Still, I prefer to just wander around until fate strikes!

++++++++++++++++++++++

• Oh, yeah, another thing – did you know that Serendipity’s phone number is 378-2665, and the 2665 spells “book” on the phone keypad? THAT’s serendipity…

The San Juan Update. News you’ll never read anywhere else.

The hospital is coming along - you can see the progress if you head for the airport terminal (and Skagit Valley College, San Juan Center, who starts classes today)...

• Tomorrow: The Writers’ Café open mic will be held from 5:00 – 6:30pm at The Bean on Friday, January 6th. Bring your fiction, nonfiction or poetry to read, or just show up to listen. Coffee, tea, pastries and such will be available for purchase.

• It’s this weekend – The Farmers Market, at the high school (inside) from 10am-1pm…see you there!

•  Here’s a bit of a writeup about a cool project – another way to make things better for our kids. Here’s more from Matt Marinkovich:

It all started back in 2005 when an 8-year old girl walked up to a classmate’s father and said, “Wanna see my cavities?”  She opened her mouth for inspection.  After viewing a mouthful of rotten teeth, Matt Marinkovich, an opportunistic commercial fisherman, came up with an interesting idea: capitalize on the occasional opportunities when the fishing industry has extra cash on the table, and use that money to fix kids’ teeth in San Juan County.

A year later, Fish for Teeth was born, with a five-member board consisting of commercial fishermen and dentists.  The goal was for the 501(c)(3) organization to cut through the red tape, and start fixing teeth.  Fish for Teeth has worked closely with the County Public Health Department, and the Dental Coalition of San Juan County.

The group had high aspirations in the beginning, which soon were quashed by the realization that the cash-on-the table opportunities were actually quite few and far between.  They had a trickle of income from selling fish tacos, and managed to do a couple small teeth projects, but mostly they hunkered down and waited for an opportunity to make a big bang with their limited bucks.

The opportunity has finally arrived, in the form of a Dental Van sponsored by Medical Teams International, based out of Redmond, WA (see below).  For $800 per day, the RV-sized van, fully stocked with supplies and two dental chairs, will travel to most anywhere there is a need for dental care.

Fish for Teeth seized this opportunity, and the van is coming to Friday Harbor to fix people’s teeth on January 13 and 14, in the Marketplace parking lot.  The van is fully booked for this first visit, but the Fish for Teeth team is hoping to bring the van back to Friday Harbor, and other Islands as well, at regular intervals.

Fish for Teeth’s main fundraiser is preparing and offering (for a donation) fish tacos to the public.  They have done this twice before, and will be doing it again when the van is providing its services next Friday, January 13.  Tacos will be on sale from 11:30 to 2 p.m.  Suggested donation is $7.00.

These delectable fish tacos are prepared on a flour tortilla, with sustainably harvested Alaskan rockfish, caught, cared for, and prepared by Matt Marinkovich.  Accompanying the fish is fresh salsa from Pablito’s Taqueria, and fresh cabbage donated from Heritage Farm.  Throw in some cheese, mayo, and a squeeze of lime… YUMMY!!!  Thanks go to Earth Box Hotel and Spa for donating their kitchen to prepare the ingredients.

Fish for Teeth T-shirts, created by Loea Design, will be for sale for $20 at the event, or at Loea Design, located next to Whidbey Island Bank at 535 Market Street.

The team of volunteer dentists and their assistants are from San Juan Island.  Although our local dentists will give generously of their time, dental professionals from off-island may also volunteer their time on future visits, if funding is available to bring the van.  Accommodation donations are crucial to making this happen.  The van always has one off-island staffer, whose accommodations were donated this time by Nichols Street Suites.

There are many ways to support Fish for Teeth.  Help is always needed when the dental van comes to town, either in making fish tacos or helping in some capacity with the dental van. On a more committed level, Fish for Teeth is looking for a volunteer to act as manager, which would take about 10 hours a month.

Of course, donations are always welcome.  You can donate at fishforteeth.com with your paypal account.  You will also see our “Adopt a Mouth” program, which addresses specific cases.  You can make a donation in person at this event—simply enjoying a fish taco is a donation in itself, or Fish for Teeth T-shirts are available for a $20 donation.

Please spread the word about this organization, and this event.  And, as always… THINK FISH !!!

A new year’s checkin with Deb Langhans….

Posted January 4, 2012 at 9:36 pm by

Deb Langhans

I last referred you to Deb Langhans as that crazy & fun medium Madam Arcati in Stage Left’s recent production of Blithe Spirit.

Now Deb’s switched hats again & will be offering a special workshop on Saturday, January 14th through her business, Wholistic Health Options (you can contact her at bethechange5 (at) rockisland.com or 378-8907). Since the workshop title intrigued me, I decided to corner Deb with some questions… here’s an excerpt from our interview:

Q.  Inner Journey Collage–that’s an intriguing title for a workshop.  Say more.

A. Carl Jung taught that we all have multiple selves within & that completion–wholeness–is achieved only as we can acknowledge & honor each of those different parts of ourselves. Inner Journey Collage (IJC) helps you do that in a fun & therapeutic way.

This upcoming workshop represents some of the work I do one-on-one with my wholistic health coaching clients… In that setting, they typically start with an “Identity” card–one of those various personalities within, for instance, “Dutiful Daughter,” or “Nurturer,” or “Perfectionist”–some part of themselves they’d like to explore & better understand.  With that intention, they choose from a wide variety of images I supply to create their card on 6″ x 9″ mat board.

Once completed, they learn how to “dialogue” with those images–that process taps their intuition & inner wisdom & provides insight into aspects of their past, present &/or future perhaps never before realized.  When I first dialogued with images from my “Wounded Child” card, I learned things about my mother that I never accessed through counseling.

The IJC process allows us to better understand & accept ourselves–all parts of ourselves.  That’s tremendously empowering.  I’ll be facilitating the same process during the workshop on January 14th, plus I’ll do numerous exercises to help prime everyone’s unconscious pumps, so to speak.

Q.  You mentioned “wholistic health coaching” clients.  Could you clarify that type of coaching a little?

A.  I call my coaching “wholistic” because it addresses the whole person–mind, body, heart & spirit.  I’ve been a wellness educator for about 20 years, which means I’ve been approaching health or well-being in a “wholistic” way for quite a while.  My B.A. is in Psychology & I’m a former Registered Counselor with the State of Washington.  No matter what clients come in for, I address their health on all levels–mental, physical, emotional, spiritual.

Q.  And you do bodywork also. I’m sure glad you’ve done reflexology on me.

A.  Yes, I offer reflexology of the feet, ears, face & hands, plus some massage therapy, which incorporates a variety of modalities I’ve adapted over the years as a licensed massage therapist.

Q.  Okay, now a ticklish question: It’s no secret that most businesses have slowed down during this economic downturn.  I understand that you’re still booking weeks ahead. What’s your theory on that?

A. You’re right, Ian, that is a ticklish question!  Let me try to answer it this way.

My vision for Wholistic Health Options remains the same today as when I opened 2+ years ago: I’m committed to offering effective, client-specific services & keeping them as affordable & accessible as possible.  I’ve always focused on educating clients about the importance of adequate self-care & stress management.

Women especially can struggle with self-neglect, overcommitment, perfectionism, setting appropriate boundaries…  Stress triggers or at least exacerbates most physical problems & visits to the doctor.  So targeting both those areas through coaching & touch therapy really influences the quality of our health on all levels.

My wellness educator background, as I said before, enables me to provide much more than touch therapy to clients, whether they initially come in for reflexology, massage or coaching. That includes offering resources, customizing guided imagery & light trance work, & facilitating a wide variety of studio & home activities for deepening their personal development work.

I once read a quote by author Jo Courdert that’s remained a guidepost in both my professional & personal life:
“Of all the people you will know in a lifetime, you are the only one you will never leave nor lose.  To the question of your life, you are the only answer.  To the problems of your life, you are the only solution.”  I believe helping clients discover the power within is my greatest responsibility… & my greatest privilege.

I’m very grateful that islanders continue to resonate with the services & perspectives I offer.

Q.  One final question:  What do you say to islanders who say they can’t afford such extras?

A.  Adequate self-care (including stress management) is not a luxury.  Especially in these unstable times, it’s a necessity.  My clients, most of them with limited funds, have chosen to prioritize their health & personal development.  Those without discretionary income can still choose to challenge the quality of their thoughts, exercise & rest regularly, eat responsibly, pursue meaningful relationships & work… Regardless of our budget, we always have a choice to live this one precious life as healthily as possible.

I’ve known Deb for a few years now, and she’s a great reflexologist who has a natural way with figuring out what a person needs to grow, as well. Give her a call and check in – you’ll be glad you did!

STAR (Study time & recreation!) grows….

Posted January 4, 2012 at 6:05 am by

Teachers Alice (left) and Conrad keep things exciting with the STAR program & their kids....

It’s great to hear that Island Rec’safter-school program is off to a good start. STAR began in September at the elementary school as the successor to the ASK program, and it’s continuing to grow & improve. Here’s more from Island Rec’s Sally Thomsen:

Halloween was fun!

Island Rec is excited to announce expanded hours and new discounted fees for Island Rec’s daily after school care program, Study Time and Afternoon Recreation (STAR). STAR is an enriched daily after school care program for youth in grades K-6th held at Friday Harbor Elementary school.

Beginning in January:

STAR will now be open on school holidays beginning on January 16, the public holiday observing Martin Luther King. STAR will be open from 8am-6pm.

• Early dismissal fees have been reduced from $26 a day to $21.
• A 20% additional sibling discount is now offered.
• Parents can now have their kids drop into the program rather than pre-registering; Island Rec will invoice parents at the end of the month.

Island Rec has been operating STAR since early September 2011 and although there has seen a steady increase in enrollment, it has not yet reached capacity. “As the word gets out that this an Island Rec program and the kids are having fun, the more it attracts new families.”

Two qualified staff develops and implements a well rounded program that includes a variety of games and activities that focus on developing social and recreation skills along with snack, free time, study time and home work assistance.

In addition to Island Rec STAR is supported by San Juan Island School District and San Juan Island Prevention Coalition.

Contact Island Rec at 378-4953 or www.islandrec.orgto apply for STAR.

Calling artists, to work with the kids….

Posted January 3, 2012 at 7:55 am by

It’s so cool what Leisha Holmes and the IMA are doing to bring & keep & nurture art in the schools – and now, there’s a way for other artists to give a hand. Here’s more, from Leisha:

The Island Museum of Art and Washington State Arts Commission have helped fund a new program that will bring quality art instruction to Friday Harbor Elementary students. This Teaching Artist Residency  program at Friday Harbor Elementary will connect classrooms in grades K-4 with teaching artists who live on San Juan Island.

Artists will work with one grade level for 6 weeks. Interested applicants should send  resume to  leishaholmes (at) sjisd.wednet.edu. or mail a copy to San Juan Island School District c/o Leisha Holmes, PO Box 458, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.

I’ve known Shelly Van Skyhawk for years, and I’m pretty sure you’d enjoy working with her as well. If you’re like me, you have “getting my eating under control” on the New Year’s list…this would be a great place to start! Give her a call today to find out more….

The new year, underway….

Posted January 2, 2012 at 3:39 pm by

Happy New Year! Here is this year's photo of the San Juan Island New Year's Day Polar Bear Swimmers, who jumped in the ocean at noon on New Year's Day at San Juan County Park. They include Chris Slack (left), Derek Steere, Sharyn Columna & San Juan County Park Ranger Eugene. A small but brave group! Photo by Lauren Cohen (thanks, Lauren!)

Let’s see what’s happening around here! Here’s a start:

• It was fun to run into Jo & Pat Sandwith on the ferry as they came back from two weeks in Switzerland & Germany over the holiday…great stories to tell, including that they ran into Jim McNairy at the airport in Germany…he & Dottie had been to Africa to see THEIR son…

++++++++++++++++++

• School daze: Today’s a holiday for the kids at school – they’re back in action tomorrow. And it’s a good week to drop by Skagit Valley College, as classes get underway. Signup!

Heather

Here’s what Heather Spaulding is up to these days – she’s started her own little business – here’s the scoop:

Heather Spaulding opened a process serving business on the island – Tiger Eye Legal Services, serving San Juan, Skagit and Island Counties.  Her office is located on Argyle, Suite 435-C, next to the Home Trust. She charges $40.00 for San Juan Island, $50.00 for the other islands,  and $80.00 for Skagit and Island Counties.  She’s small, she’s stealth, she’ll have them served before they even know what hit them! You can email her at heatherj (at) tigereyeinvestigations.com.

• There’s a wind advisory for this afternoon & evening – batten down the hatches! Here’s the report.

Kyle

• Just heard from Kyle Davies that he’s finishing up his training in Seattle this year, and he could use a hand with housing there. Can you help, or do you know someone who can? Here’s his note & contact info (kdavies (at) sanjuanems.org or 298-0720):

Hey, Ian! A friend suggested I connect with you about a challenge I have. I’m wondering how best to pass along an appeal to islanders for 6 months of housing in Seattle. Last June I was accepted into the Seattle Medic One Paramedic Training Program with Seattle Fire, UW, and Harborview Medical Center. The program began in early October and is slated to wrap up in July of this new year.

Upon completion of the program I will come back to the island and work as the island’s newest paramedic with San Juan Island EMS (Emergency Medical Services). Cady and I are trying where we can to save funds as most of the room and board expenses are out of pocket for us.  The program is one of immersion and the schedule prevents commuting and favors living as close to Harborview as practical.

We’re wondering if any of your readers might have a lead on an apartment, condo, studio, or space where I can live (or rent if needed) near First Hill, Capitol Hill, or Beacon Hill.  I have been living on Mercer Island in the good graces of island friends whose house here is now selling.  Any thoughts?   I appreciate any ideas or help you can provide… thanks Ian!

• I love people who write stuff that makes me think, makes me feel…I asked Jim “Shu” Carroll if I could share this with you, that he posted earlier today:

this morning i stood in a steaming shower and had a recurring revelation. i remembered an evening when my son ben, who had just returned from a long period of working with AIDS orphans in lesotho, had first turned my perspective on its head. he walked to the kitchen sink, filled a glass of water from the tap, and drank it. as he set the glass down on the counter he said “pretty much everywhere i’ve been in the last couple of years that would have been the definition of wealth.”

here i was, standing in a wasteful stream of water from which i could actually drink without becoming ill. i realized with a kind of horror that i am MUCH closer to being a member of the 1% than the 99%. i can turn that horror to gratitude, but the guilt doesn’t wash away so easily.

• Remember how one of your new year’s resolutions was to get out more & do more in the community? Here’s a great idea from Jenny Wilson, who is in charge of the Community Service Projects at FHHS:

Evaluators needed for Community Service Projects

The Community Service Projects class at Friday Harbor High School is a chance for juniors to explore their passions and strengths by designing a project with a community partner that addresses a need in the community.  By designing and completing a meaningful project it is hoped that students will leave a lasting legacy for the school, community and themselves.

The semester is soon coming to an end and students have been working diligently all semester to complete their projects. On Wednesday January 18th, 2012 (5:30 – 7:00pm), students will be giving presentations demonstrating all that they have accomplished and learned this term.  It will truly be an exciting evening to learn about the Beaverton Marsh Duck Nests project,  Dental Hygiene Education project,  After School Arts project,  Softball Dugout Rejuvenation Project, just to name a few.  We need community members to come and give valuable feedback to our students about their projects.

For those of you who have assisted us before, I think you will be impressed with how far we have come as a school in our efforts to make community connections and do real world work.  For those of you who have not attended these presentations, it’s an opportunity to see the accomplishments of students in our school.  We are proud of the passion students have for their service projects.

Logistics:

We need approximately 15 evaluators.

For What:  Community Service Presentations
Where:  Friday Harbor High School
When:  Wednesday, Jan 18
Time:  5:30 – 7:00
Why: Give feedback to students about their projects

Please respond by email at: [email protected]  if you can evaluate.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of the students and their learning!

Jenny

I love this - Yvonne Bowman at the post office shared with me the note her grandson Xander (five years old!) wrote for Santa - she tells me Xander's doing great. His dad Rob Combs is doing well, and his mom Nikki Fink is fondly remembered by islanders after her passing more than a year ago....there's a lot of love in that family.

Just got this note about Ed Johnson:

Lifelong island resident Ed Johnson passed away suddenly Wednesday morning while feeding his cows. Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 2nd, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the Valley Cemetery. There will be a reception immediately following at the Grange Hall. Please join the family in this tribute to Ed’s life. A full obituary will follow in the Journal.

Ahead….

For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.

Looking ahead, looking behind….

Posted January 1, 2012 at 2:49 am by

One of the songs I almost always sing each new year is Both Sides, Now by Joni Mitchell…seems like a good time to share it, now, as you & I move into the wonderful chances for loving, sharing, and healing that are ours to embrace & make happen in the days ahead.

Dreams & schemes…let’s go!

+++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++

Both Sides, Now
Joni Mitchell

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at cloud that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things i would have done but clouds got in my way.

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions i recall.
I really don’t know clouds at all.

Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real; i’ve looked at love that way.
But now it’s just another show. you leave ’em laughing when you go
And if you care, don’t let them know, don’t give yourself away.

I’ve looked at love from both sides now,
From give and take, and still somehow
It’s love’s illusions i recall.
I really don’t know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud to say “I love you” right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I’ve looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I’ve changed.
Something’s lost but something’s gained in living every day.

I’ve looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall.
I really don’t know life at all.

New Year’s resolution? Same as last year’s.

Resolutions for a new year…

Posted December 29, 2011 at 11:36 pm by

You already know that one of my all-time heroes is Woody Guthrie…I think that one of the best things you can do besides sing his songs is maybe check out this handwritten entry in his 1941 diary, listing what he’d do in the coming year – be sure & click on the picture so you can read it!

Woody suggested these as his "New Year's Rulin's" in 1941....

The Good Husbands come home….

Posted December 29, 2011 at 11:26 pm by

They’ll be playing at Blue Water for tomorrow’s New Year’s Eve, and it’s fun to see the island’s Good Husbands again.

The guys are Zach (Riv), Tyler (Guy Rob), T-Hart (THAT Tyler), and Spencer (Satin). They have some warmup bands playing as well…if you haven’t seen them lately, here’s their latest vid, produced by Trent Roberts, who does a super job – I love it that so much of the island (and other places) is in the show:

What’s happening…

Posted December 29, 2011 at 11:05 pm by

This month's Garden Club meeting was the annual potluck, which was fun AND filling....the Club will not have a meeting in January (next week), with the next one scheduled for February.

Somebody told me that a consultant is someone who will borrow your watch to tell you what time it is…similarly, these may be things you already know…

• Ken Clark tells me that Extreme Fitness has yoga classes planned for the new year – starting January 9th,

Hatha yoga emphasizes stretching, grounding, breathing and deep relaxation. All levels are welcome.

+++++++++++++

• Debbie at Roche Harbor Market tells me that there are only 25 spots left in next year’s Roche Harbor Salmon Classic in early February.

With a first place prize of $10K, this fishing derby sells out every year…click here to get the entry forms & get aboard!

++++++++++++++++++++

Sandpebble

This week only! ....for a while...

• Carolyn & Brian at Sandpebble have a deal for you:

You have two more days to shop Sandpebble before the BIG remodel begins! Christmas items are still 50% off and everything else in the store is 20% off. We are closing for the month of January…don’t worry we will keep you posted 🙂

Grab your Valentine’s Day cards now and any other goodies you might need.

+++++++++++++++

• Hope not only springs eternal, it sometimes looks like it’s going to win, or at least comes close.

If you heard unmuffled roars around the island last night, it was probably because the University of Washington was a heavy favorite to get drilled in the Alamo Bowl, but showed lot of grit in scoring 28 in the second to take a 35-24 halftime lead, then to trail only 53-49 after three, before bowing to Baylor in a highest-bowl-game scoring 67-56 loss that still left Husky fans feeling pretty proud (and probably left the one Baylor fan I know on the island feeling pretty happy.)

That's FHES second grade teacher Shannon Evans leading her tribe to the Mullis Center before Christmas to sing for folks....she got engaged over Christmas, which is why she'll smile when you say "Happy New Year" to her...

+++++++++++

It’s moving time…looks like the Islands Museum of Art is on the move again, and Lavendera will move into their spot early next month (in the former Dominique’s Clothing/Be Chic spot next to the Little Store). Here’s more from Lavendera’s Celie:

Lavendera Day Spa is moving. The last day at our old location is Saturday, December 31st.  We will continue taking appointments starting  on January 2nd in a temporary location. Please call 360-378-3637 for info.

Look for our opening in our new location on 285 Spring Street at the end of January. We look forward to serving you in our wonderful larger location soon.

Here come’s New Year’s Eve on the island!

Posted December 29, 2011 at 8:49 pm by

You probably have made your plans by now, but just in case, here are some ideas from folks around the island:

• One couple (who I KNOW you know) went out at Griffin Bay & at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s for 2000 & set up a barrel of water in a tree & then got naked & pulled it down on them. Neighbors could hear the scream…then they went home to the warm fire & drank polar bears.

I just asked her if it was OK for me to tell the story, and she said sure but not to use names, because we don’t want to embarrass the relatives….

• Another group of friends of yours & mine goes to Lime Kiln or thereabouts and watch the sun go down for the last time for the year & everyone makes their wishes of the good things they visualize for the coming year.

• My Southern friends eat black-eyed peas…well, yeah.

Spend New Years Eve With The Chameleons at The Rumor MillAt the Rumor Mill, the Chameleons kick it off at 9pm (here’s the Facebook event page)…and here’s the scoop from Oren:
