Bronwyn’s back & practicing on the island!

Posted June 2, 2011 at 10:16 am by

Dr. Bronwyn Bacon

It was years ago that Bronwyn Bacon (FHHS ’97) left the island to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor – and now she’s back & has set up her practice here. Here’s more from the press release announcing this:

Dr. Bacon Now Accepting Patients: On-Island Natural Family Medicine

Dr Bronwyn Bacon, ND, is excited to announce the opening of her naturopathic medical practice here in Friday Harbor.  She is a board certified licensed primary care physician, specializing in family medicine. Dr. Bacon combines modern, scientific, evidence-based methods with traditional, natural, therapeutic approaches to address your health care needs.  There are several ways she can be involved in your health care.

Primary Care: Dr. Bacon can act as your primary care physician, providing physical exams, annual exams, and acute care.

Specialist: If you are looking for support in addressing a specific condition or concern, she can act as a specialist, rather than a primary care physician.

Optimal Wellness: Whether you are interested in primary care or specialized services, she will work to address your health goals by creating a personalized plan and helping you develop a foundation for true, long-lasting wellness.

She is always happy to work with other practitioners and specialists (doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, licensed midwives, nurse practitioners, etc.) to provide comprehensive and complementary healthcare.

Please visit her website at www.DrBronwynBacon.com, where you can find more information about her practice, the services she offers, and the role NDs play in the field of medicine. You can also sign up for her free email newsletter, which is full of quick and easy tips to help you take control of your health on your own.

The clinic is located in the upstairs portion of Spa d’Bune at 669 Mullis Street.  Appointments are available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 5pm. Call (360) 378-3355.

Dr. Bacon completed her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA.

Dr. Bacon says, “I am thrilled to be back in Friday Harbor offering my services to the community.  My goal is to help people overcome their health challenges and lead richer, more enjoyable lives.  I am dedicated to offering the highest quality of medical care available, and I look forward to supporting your family’s health in whatever way I can.”

Quartet Winners Join Barbershop Bonanza

San Juan Island’s popular Barbershop Bonanza returns to the Whittier stage on June 5 at 2:00 p.m., with a young, award-winning quartet joining the festivities.

The New Originals, winners of the Evergreen District Quartet Championship in Portland, Oregon last fall, join the Bonanza lineup for the first time.  The group features twins Ted and Turner Stiers (who have been “barbershopping” since the age of 11–their dad is a former Evergreen champion himself), tenor Joe McCorison and baritone Josh Honrud–all of the quartet members are from Northern Washington.  The Evergreen District encompasses men’s barbershop music and education groups from throughout Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and  Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.

Also featured in the Bonanza is Bellingham’s men’s chorus, the Mount Baker Toppers; San Juan’s women’s a cappella ensemble, Sounds Vibrations; and Island Chordsmen Plus, San Juan’s mixed barbershop chorus.

The groups will perform medleys of contemporary and old-time favorites, including “Shenandoah” and “Nevertheless.”

Everyone in the audience is invited to attend the complimentary afterglow reception in the Gubelman Theatre after the show.

Becki - she's a great one!

• Do it right! When you’re getting married or putting on an event, it sure is nice to have someone lend a hand who keeps things organized & keeps things feeling at ease….I got to sing at a wedding a week ago out at Roche Harbor that Becki Day was the wedding coordinator for – she’s awesome!

You know there’s all the details that are involved (flowers, music, food, photos & a bunch of other small things) – you’ll want someone who knows the island, has done a million other successful events & keeps things calm with her organization & expertise.

That’s what I saw Becki doing for this one, and I’ve seen her doing it for years – call her today! You’ll be glad you did!

This is a posting I found by Shann Weston in Facebook (crossposted by Cynthia Burke), as she visits Vancouver Island:

Jazz at the Labs – come listen this Saturday

Posted June 1, 2011 at 7:40 am by

Get your tickets now!

This is one of my favorite events of the year, and it always plays to a crowded room of science-loving jazz fans. (I originally said “jazz nut” but found out that was Morris Almond when he was drafted by the Utah Jazz in ’07).

As you know, JATL is the sole fundraiser for the Labs’ support of the Friday Harbor Labs Science Outreach Program (now in its 10th year). The funding of the Science Outreach Program is a partnership, that is also funded in a large part by the San Juan Island School District and generous donations to the San Juan Public Schools Foundation.

Jenny Roberts and Margo Thorp run a great program, and you can find out more about it here.

Here’s more from Rachel Anderson:

Jazz at the Labs, Saturday, June 4th
music begins at 6 p.m.
(Doors open at 5:30 for early viewing of the silent auction items)

Jazz Performances by :
San Juan Jazz Quintet
Chris Amemiya’s Jazz Coalescence

Our emcee will be Dick Stein from KPLU’s Midday Jazz

Farhad Ghatan will help us with our “mini-auction.” Our mini auction will consist of 3-4 fabulous live auction items and then a dozen or so silent auction pieces. We are hoping to raise much needed extra funds for the FHL Science Outreach Program.

Tickets are $40 for dinner and music. We usually sell out, so people are encouraged to call 360-378-2165 (ext. 0) to make reservations in advance.

We’d like to offer a special thank you to our supporters:

The Islanders Bank San Juan Celebrity Golf Classic – this weekend!

Posted June 1, 2011 at 7:26 am by

Here’s the word from Becki Day:

Islander’s Bank San Juan Celebrity Golf – June 3rd and 4th!

A full list of well known celebrities are on their way to San Juan Island – it’s the 25th Annual Islanders Bank Celebrity Classic at the San Juan Golf and Country Club. Golf fee includes your dinner tickets.  Or, if one just wants to dine and meet the celebrities and have fun at the big traditional Salmon BBQ, cooked by the talented John Vevjoda and his team. 400 lbs. of Alaskan salmon is being donated by San Juan Seafood’s once again. Tickets are $25.00.  That dinner, and the fun raising auction, annually attended by nearly 500 friends and neighbors, will again be in the big tent out at the golf course starting Saturday night – 5pm for appetizers donated by our generous local restaurants and the salmon dinner at 6pm.

The winning team will enjoy having their names posted on the John Linde Memorial Plaque hanging at Islanders Bank. This in tribute to our much loved Judge who gave this community so much and always played in the tournament.

Visiting stars you’ll meet include Champion Hydroplane Drivers, Huskies, Seahawks, Radio and TV stars along with famous names from rock and roll.

For golf and dinner tickets contact Becki Day, 378 9519 or [email protected].

Morning song: “Islands” from Young the Giant

Checking in, around San Juan….

"Here's looking at you!" - photographer John Miller and a fox stare each other down last week (thanks for the photo, John!)

Let’s see what’s going on:

• First of all, you need to know: The statute of limitations is up for using the power outage Thursday night/Friday morning as an excuse.

Everybody understood on Friday when you were late for work, and over the weekend, no one looks at a clock anyway. But it’s Tuesday now, so if you’re still using it as the reason your report isn’t done or that you slept in, that’s pretty lame.

Even if your clock is still flashing because you haven’t reset it yet.

Mine is. 🙂

• Have you looked at the weather lately? The weather forecast for this weekend looks pretty nice – hope the forecast holds! (Some other weather folks say it may even get into the 70s…wahoo!)

It was great to get a chance to visit with Clark & Shelly at the Whale Museum fundraiser the other day....

• Do you think about turning off Facebook & e-mail & your smartphone & (gasp!) The Update, just to hear what your own heart is telling you? Here’s an essay & story by someone who found the benefits of disconnecting in a too-connected world. See what you think.

• Cindy Gutierrez (378-4298) and friends are hosting a spaghetti feed, raffle & silent auction for Carmen Dixon on Sunday the 5th at the Legion (below) from 2-5pm. She says Carmen’s cancer is back and she’ll be undergoing a double mastectomy. The raffle includes a staycation at Roche Harbor Resort (includes a one night stay in a luxury suite, a Signature Massage at Afterglow Spa, and dinner for two at McMillin’s Dining Room.) See you there – and good luck, Carmen!

• The Marathon is this weekend! Just sayin’….

The sunset burns in the window....

The Marathon…this week on San Juan Island!

Posted May 31, 2011 at 8:28 am by

And they're off! The race starts & ends in front of the Fairgrounds on Argyle Street at 8:30am. It was fun to get up & see the start of the race & cheer folks on....

It’s the ninth running of the race (the first was 2003!), and it just gets better every year. I love the way this event brings so many people to enjoy the island…here’s more from Clark Gilbert:

Kings Market San Juan Island Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K
to be held on Sunday, June 5

Support your runner! These girls were cheering for mom as she comes around Bailer Hill Road onto Douglas Road...

They are San Juan Island’s premier running events: the Marathon (26.2 miles), the Half Marathon (13.1 miles) and a newly added 10K (6.2 miles). This year’s races will be held on Sunday, June 5. All three races start at 8:30 am, with all runners being off the course by 2:00 pm. All events will start and finish at the San Juan Country Fairgrounds.

We would like to thank all those who have helped in developing and producing these events, which has earned the “most scenic” nod from Northwest Runner magazine. A big thank you to Kings Market for being our presenting sponsor!

If you're out driving on the island Sunday, watch for runners!

Course and Traffic Information: The Marathon and Half Marathon starts at San Juan County Fairgrounds and heads out San Juan Valley Road until Wold. Runners will follow Wold until Bailer Hill and Half Marathoners will follow Bailer Hill to Douglas, then little and on to Cattle Point. Then Half Marathoners will turn right on Argyle and continue up the Argyle hill until the finish at San Juan County Fairgrounds. Marathoners will turn right on Bailer Road and run to Lime Kiln State Park, turn around, and continue back to town the same way as the Half Marathoners. Upon reaching Friday Harbor, Marathoners will continue around the Turn Point and Pear Point Loops before finishing at the Fairgrounds. Complete course descriptions can be found at www.sjmarathon.org

10K runners will, from the Fairgrounds, run the Turn Point and Pear Point Loop arriving back to the Fairgrounds and the finish.

Volunteers are needed to help as aid stations handlers, course directors and finish line helpers. If interested please call San Juan Fitness at 378-4449 and leave your name for Kerry.

We encourage all Sunday morning drivers to be very cautious and aware as they encounter runners on these public roads. Please give them the right away and when passing runners, pass with care.

Remembering on Memorial Day on San Juan Island….

Yesterday was Memorial Day on the island, and as the weather cleared throughout the day, we had a nice day with which to enjoy a day off & do things with family & friends & loved ones.

The morning started with the reason for the day downtown, with a parade honoring the veterans who live here & beyond, as well as those who have passed on.

A good-sized crowd participated in the ceremony, and took the time to remember the sacrifices.

The San Juan Island Artists Studio Tour…this weekend!

Posted May 31, 2011 at 6:59 am by

Many of the studios have more than one presentation - this year, painter Ann Walbert welcomes woodworking artist Keith Keyser at her studio.

This coming weekend is one of the island events I like the most – the San Juan Island Artists Studio Tour. It’s almost impossible to get around to all 19 studios, but it’s sure easy to work a few into your busy weekend…after all, there’s nowhere on the island you’re going where you won’t pass a studio that’s on the map.

Here’s what’s great about it: Whether you’re a casual art fan (like me) or a real, in-depth art connoisseur who goes to all the openings in town throughout the year, with the Tour you get an easy, comfortable & warm chance to meet the people who make the pieces, and to find out how they do the magic that they do. It’s their chance to shine, and welcome you into their creative space for a while…my friends, this is a chance not to be missed.

Click on the map for details & studio info...

In every place that Josie & I visited on last year’s Tour, the passion of the different artists shone through as they showed us their new work, explained how they do it, and helped us find the next place on the Tour (and usually had cookies, too!) One of the folks I ran into at a studio on the west side said, “I thought I knew the island till now…and I guess I did, because I knew where the stores & the whales & the hiking is. Now I feel like I’ve found its soul.”

It’ll touch yours. See you on the Tour.

Here’s the Studio Tour’s website – this is the twentieth year of a great island tradition – print out the map & have a great weekend!

Drop by Paula West's pottery studio to see what she's been working on lately....

Janet’s book wins 2011 Nautilus Book Award – wahoo!

Posted May 30, 2011 at 8:37 am by

Janet

It’s been so wonderful to see Janet Thomas’ work get the recognition it deserves, and the trend continues as the 2011 Nautilus Book Awards were announced and her memoir DAY BREAKS OVER DHARAMSALA: A Memoir Of Life Lost and Found was named a Silver Winner.

Janet’s well-attended reading for the book last year at Griffin Bay Books was a moving experience in its own right – if you missed that, and haven’t read the book yet, you have a great experience ahead of you. Here’s more about the book and here’s more about the award.

Here’s what folks have said about the book – they put it best:

The 2011 Nautilus Award Winner (Silver)

This is a wonderful, devastating, exquisitely written book. I unhesitatingly recommend it to all seekers and all those who want to understand the spirit’s capacity to survive ordeal with grace and courage.” — Andrew Harvey, Author of The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism

“Brilliantly conceived and beautifully executed, Day Breaks Over Dharamsala is the story of Thomas’s travels in India, and of her decades-long spiritual journey from mute, uncomprehending victim to fluent, powerful and persuasive survivor. It should be required reading for parents, teachers, all others who work with children, and adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Or who love a fine story.” — Norm Stamper, Author of Breaking Rank: A Top Cop’s Expose of the Dark Side of American Policing

Janet Thomas’s journey, as embodied by her book, is a gem. I have never before read a memoir of suffering and death that so synthesizes wisdom, compassion, joy, and the pure grit of hanging on swinging from the most perilous heights. Day Breaks Over Dharamsala is a masterpiece. —Jim Douglass, Author of JFK and the Unspeakable

Around the island….

Posted May 30, 2011 at 8:07 am by

Spring, sprung...cherry blossoms all over the island

Let’s look around a bit….

• The Memorial Day Parade is this morning at 10:30, starting from the Courthouse & heading to the marina, with the festivities at Memorial Park. Come, and remember.

Marie has class today at noon....

• There’s a new yoga teacher at XYZ Movement ArtsMarie Hart moved from the East Bay, CA to be near her family here. She’s taught a lot of yoga for the past 11 years and helped run a very successful yoga teacher training school. Her style is “Iyengar,” the kind of yoga where you get individual help on each pose. Look up her website, mariehartyoga.com.

• The softball girls had a good time at state Friday & Saturday…they showed they belonged there by winning the first game, but lost the next couple in the double-elim format. It’s so cool they made it to State – girls, you have a whole island that’s proud of you!

• Marie DiCristina may have your bird:

If someone lost a pet bird, I found and captured a small domesticated bird in the North Forty neighbor on Sunday, May 29.  I’ll keep it at my home until the owner calls and describes the bird.  Surely someone is missing this sweet little creative.  I worry that an elderly person or small child is distraught and want them to know the bird is safe and waiting to be picked up.

Nan Simpson was on hand to help with & document the discovery (and removal & necropsy) of that stranded hybrid porpoise we talked about last week – here’s her report, with pictures.

Nancy Larson was there a week ago at the dedication & groundbreaking of the Brickworks project, and she reports there was a $25K donation as well as a festive feel to the launch – here’s more, from Nancy:

Renovations at Brickworks got off to a rousing start last weekend not only with a celebration, but also with an anonymous $25,000 donation. Jane Burton Bell, actively raising funds for Brickworks, was thrilled to announce that Brickworks had just received this strong show of support from an individual donor, a gift that puts the Ag Guild more than halfway toward its goal of raising $50,000 for completion of the plaza this summer, in time to hold the Farmers Market and a mid-week Arts Market outdoors.

Well-wishers and celebrants launched the renovations, toasting the “ground breaking” and the volunteer excavation crew: Peter Kilpatrick, Ravenhill Construction; Pat Bryant; and Myron Williams for donating the heavy equipment.

Ag Guild Chair Bruce Gregory thanked the 100 or so gathered at Brickworks for on-going support and gave the official thumbs-up: the renovations are underway. He noted how important everyone’s support and contributions are, “It doesn’t matter how big or small,” everyone’s help matters.

Board member Susie Wampler, our event organizer extraordinaire, welcomed all and spoke about the future “ripple” effect of Brickworks, how it will enhance the neighborhood around Nichols Street and bring a heretofore-unused area of Friday Harbor to life with a Farmers Market and Town Center. She pointed to the children scampering around with fistfuls of cookies, “This is for them. This is for the future.” Susie also praised the volunteer contractors for taking on this first phase of renovations, preparation of the outdoor plaza. Brad Gislason and Thor Black will also be on hand with heavy equipment as the project continues.

Friday Harbor Mayor Carrie Lacher also spoke to the crowd, “I am happy to be here today for this historic occasion — this reclaiming of a portion of the Town of Friday Harbor’s history. I am looking forward to the economic incubator aspect of the Market taking root here and helping revitalize this area of Town. By the end of summer, there will be new energy in this corner, filling this courtyard, and helping move our community into a dynamic future.”

The mood was festive, even on a cloudy day. Seeing that construction is about to begin, seeing visible evidence that Brickworks is a dream coming true, raised the enthusiasm level and the Ag Guild received more offers of help and financial support. We’re proud to say that Brickworks is indeed a hands-on community endeavor.

There's a great view of the harbor from The Island Inn at 123 West....Scott Hale is the new CEO there!

• Looks like Scott has moved over to 123 West from Lakedale – here’s the scoop:

The Island Inn at 123 West is pleased to announce Scott Hale, former Director of Inns and Resorts for Columbia Hospitality, as the new Chief Experience Officer of the iconic San Juan Island development located at 123 West Street in the heart of Friday Harbor, WA.  Misty Todd, owner of the Island Inn, is thrilled with this strategic leadership direction, sharing “Scott’s Island and nationwide track record of success is precisely what our project needs to be everything our guests expect it to be – plus a whole lot more.”

The Island Inn at 123 West will elevate San Juan Island lodging and guest experience by featuring intuitive guest service surpassed only by unmatched accommodations.  Hale is excited to launch the Inn saying “I am thrilled.  The opportunity to transform a distinctive venue and surpass guest expectation in the most beautiful location in the Islands is quite literally one of those once in a lifetime chances you hope to get.”

Hale most recently oversaw operations at Lakedale Resort, Friday Harbor House and Ferry Landing Suites all located in Friday Harbor, WA after successful tenures at resorts in Long Key, FL, Kissimmee, FL, and the Outer Banks.  “The Island Inn is truly the highest and best use of our Friday Harbor project.  You just can’t get anything like our penthouses or euros anywhere else in the islands” remarked Todd.

The Island Inn at 123 West will offer seven penthouses, six eurostyle guestrooms and anticipates a grand opening on July 4, 2011.  Inn accommodations offer spaces for guests to unplug, connect and embrace Friday Harbor and San Juan Island.  Todd added “Our goal is simple:  completely blow away every guest every moment of their experience with us.”

They're off today, but OPALCO has been busy upgrading the lines along Tucker Avenue/Roche Harbor Road....

The Scramble – next weekend!
