What’s new….

Posted May 26, 2011 at 2:46 am by

The new readerboard at FHHS is on the corner of Blair & Guard...it's great! And the senior exhibitions were pretty awesome, as well (you can tell I took the picture earlier this week!)

Looking around the island, there are a few things going on…

T:FLO is the band as The Rumor Mill offers live karaoke tonight – drop in & you’ll sound like a rock star! Starts at 7:30pm, with OPALCO turning the lights off at 11:45 for the whole island. Probably stop by then….

Meanwhile, Dave Calhoun is playing from 2-4pm at Roche Harbor on Saturday & Sunday – always a good one to catch!

• Did you know that Dan Ward’s San Juan Transit has been running for 18 years? Wahoo!

Mark Madsen reports that there was a healthy contingent of islanders two nights ago in Seattle to hear author & essayist & wise elder of the tribe Wendell Berry.

Dick Wade runs Windjammer Janatorial Services (not to be confused with Coy's Winderjammer Barbershop or Randy's Windjammer Cable), and he did a super job with cleaning the carpets in my house as I got it ready to rent out last week - he came with high recommendations, and when he was done, I could see why! Thanks, Dick!

He said his favorite line by Mr. Berry, when asked an audience question about advice to young farmers (given in a slow Kentucky drawl): “Well, giving advice to the young is a cheap form of entertainment.”

John Boyd checks in: “Hey, Ian!…..can you mention on your website that we’ll be selling tickets to win a 3G iPad 64GB on Friday from 2-6 at Market Place? Only 165 tickets left. $5/ticket. All proceeds going to Friday Harbor Relay For Life. Thanks!”

• From our friends at the Washington State Ferries: “Customers are advised to plan for heavy traffic and long wait times during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. On Friday. May 27, WSF will provide an extra sailing from Anacortes to Orcas at 2:05 p.m. On Monday, May 30, WSF will provide an extra sailing from Orcas to Anacortes at 3:15 p.m.

“Meanwhile, the Anacortes/Sidney B.C. route will be on its regular schedule on the Memorial Day holiday, Monday, May 30.  Customers are strongly encouraged to make reservations in advance for holiday weekend travel on this route by visiting the WSF website or calling 5-1-1.”

Welcome, Kyra!

• Kyle & Melanie just welcomed a new islander – here’s more:
Kyle and Melanie Wilson are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Kyra Magdalene Wilson.

Kyra was born at Island Hospital May 5, 2011.
She weighed 6 lbs 5 oz and was 19 inches long.

Kyra is welcomed by her grandparents Gene and Kelle Wilson of Friday Harbor, Dave and Kathy Johnson of Erie, Colorado and her aunts Kati Wilson of Tuscon, Arizona, Michele Johnson of Denver, Colorado and many other family and friends.
Michele Morton at Islanders Bank tells me there’s a cool deal that’s offered by OPALCO & Islanders Bank where they’re connected to help you make home energy improvements a reality – click here to go to the Islanders Bank site and find out more (it’s a good deal!)

J.B. Herron and his company Friday Harbor Gun Runners and Northwest Safety First are offering a couple of classes this coming week (click for more info): Concealed Carry 101 (May 28-30) and Close Quarters Defensive Tactics (May 31).

Treasure on the island – drop by Castaways!

Posted May 26, 2011 at 2:37 am by

The variety & wide range of cool & interesting offerings at Castaways will amaze you - they're located at Surina Business Park - drop by!

It was great to have so many choices on the island!

Carol & Terry at Castaways

As I was clearing out fourteen years of furniture and household goods the last three weeks to get my house ready to rent, I had help from folks all over the island – Copper at Consignment Treasures, Kathleen & her crew at The Thrift Store, Carol & Dilys at Serendipity Books – all of whom helped me make sure the things & books I can no longer use will be of use to someone else.

Along with all them is a new business in town – Terry & Carol Holt are running Castaways as a consignment shop out of Surina Business Park, and it’s great what they’re doing. They have quality furniture, household items, games, toys, and more, as well as leads to things you might need but they don’t have on the showroom floor.

They helped me out by coming to pick up some of the furniture I had, and they sold some of the stuff that first week. They’re friendly, fair, and are focused on helping you to get your stuff sold!

They’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 5pm – give them a call at 317-6450 or 378-2573 for more info – you’ll be glad you did!

Time to feather your nest!

Posted May 25, 2011 at 9:57 am by

Denise & Andee do great work!

When I found out about three weeks ago that I had located some folks to rent out my house, the cool part was the chance to downsize…and that was great. Since Josie & I wanted to move to an apartment anyway, that part was easy.

The hard part was getting the place ready for the new family that was going to move in…and it wasn’t just about a few dust bunnies. I had heard of the little business called Feather Your Nest Property Services that Denise McIntosh and Christine Mays had put together (here’s the writeup from a couple of months ago)…so I called them up.

The idea behind the business is to help folks get their places cleaned so they can rent them out as a vacation rental. Even though ours isn’t a vacation rental, they agreed to give it a go, and the result was amazing. My family has lived in the house for 14 years, and needless to say, it needed a little attention. While it was in pretty good shape because we’ve been trying to sell it for the past couple of years, Denise and Andee Paul made that place shine! They have a long background in property management, and they come to the task with both experience & expertise. Their attention to detail was amazing, their expertise about how to clean out every nook & cranny & edge & corner was spot on, and when they were done, the place looked great. And…the whole time they were smiling & great to work with.

I’m really glad I called them, and really happy with the work they did! If you need someone to work with for your place, check out their website and give them a call. You’ll be glad you did!

Update on FHES principal search…

Posted May 25, 2011 at 9:18 am by

In a press release from the superintendent’s office late yesterday:

Here is an update on the search at the elementary school. Today our search committee met from 8:00 to 4:30 to interview six candidates who are qualified for the position. Each candidate was scored by the thirteen member search committee. Following the interviews, three candidates were selected to interview with the staff and community. The date of the next interviews will be Tuesday, May 31, one week from today.

Each candidate will separately have conversations with staff and community members. The staff portion of the interviews will be held from 3:00 to 4:30 at the elementary school. The staff portion is not open to the public, but from 6:00 to 7:30 the community is invited to speak with each candidate who will  have thirty minutes with community members. The names of the finalists and the schedule will be sent out by the end of the week. Staff and community will have the opportunity to provide input on each candidate.

Following the Tuesday interviews, the search team will meet on June 1, the next morning, to debrief staff and community feedback. From there, a job offer will be considered to the successful candidate.

I commend the search committee for their dedication to this task. We will provide the schedule to you as soon as completed.

Over & over & over…

Posted May 25, 2011 at 7:36 am by

In this challenging vid, Emily & Amy (the Indigo Girls) explore both’s reincarnation & recurring lives backed by the metaphor of Galileo’s “night vision,” with which ironically he saw clearly the way the universe worked…and wrote that up, only to be condemned by the dominant church at the time. How long till we get it right….

(Sorry about the nutty commercial at the first….):

Around the island….

Posted May 24, 2011 at 9:46 pm by

The gift shop at Roche Harbor has reopened this year as Louella's, with Dominique from Dominique's House reworking the look & the inventory...drop by & say hey!

Let’s take a look…

• If it seems like dèja vu all over again, that’s because it is – at the Palace Theatre this weekend it’s Kung Fu Panda 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean (like, 4). Good time for all.

That's proud dad Mike Carlson dancing with Fahren at her wedding to Tyler Norton earlier this month...the couple is settling down in Colorado. (Thanks for the photo, Shann Weston!)

• Psychic awareness of pre-confusion: I was visiting with a friend yesterday about something she had to tell someone, and she said, “I think this will clear up some pre-misconception.”

• Dropped by The Banry Cafe last night to find Gordy & Deanna working hard to get it ready….for next week. They were aiming for this weekend’s Memorial Day holiday, but will head to Spokane for the state softball playoffs in which FHHS is playing on Friday & Saturday, with daughter Lindsey starting for the Wolverines.

• That kinda reminded me of when I was in a thinktank group with four other folks, and one of them said, “Not sure that would work. Seems counterintuitive.”

The guy who proposed the plan said, “Is ‘counterintuitive’ a nice way to say ‘stupid’?” The woman kinda blushed & said, “yeah…..”

Anand stops for a moment to say hello to Avon at The Golden Triangle on Tuesday....

• It was great to visit with Anand Khokha (above) yesterday – he splits his time between the island, Los Angeles, and traveling around the world taking the most amazing pictures of people all over. Check out his new work from Burma on his website here. Amazing stuff…you’ve seen his work – he took those familiar photos at the Golden Triangle of unforgettable faces, and Avon has had those pictures up for the past 5-6 years.

Saturday's rain let up for a bit just in time for the groundbreaking at The Brickworks...on hand were project designers & supporters, including David Waldren (left), Bruce Gregory, Susie Wampler, Pat Bryant, Mayor Carrie Lacher, Pete Kilpatrick & Joel Thorson. (photo by Fabiola B. Bell)

A hybrid porpoise stranding….

Posted May 24, 2011 at 4:50 pm by

This hybrid porpoise was discovered washed up on the beach near American Camp...

If you’ve been out on the water much around here, you know there’s harbor porpoises & Dall’s porpoises…when they interbreed, they have hybrid kids. Here’s more about one that turned up on the beach here, in a report from Amy Traxler of the Marine Stranding Network, with a reminder to let her know about any animal – alive or dead – that you find washed up:

The dead porpoise was in the third trimester; this is the fetus she was carrying.

On May 21, the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network (SJCMMSN) received a call from the National Park Service of a dead porpoise on one of their pocket beaches at American  Camp.  Upon investigation, it turned out to be a female hybrid porpoise in excellent condition.   The carcass was recovered, brought to the Friday Harbor Labs, and necropsied by Joe Gaydos on Monday morning. Although the necropsy didn’t reveal any obvious cause(s) of death, additional testing is underway.  She was carrying a third-trimester fetus.

Hybrid porpoise – crosses between Dall’s and harbor – have been documented in the Salish Sea, British Columbia, and southeast Alaska for many years.  They appear to be offspring of a Dall’s female and a male harbor porpoise and, therefore, are found traveling with Dall’s porpoise.

Amy Traxler, coordinator of the SJCMMSN, says:  “This was an incredible find!  As far as I know, we’ve never recovered a hybrid porpoise here in San Juan County and, although we’re still searching the literature and contacting other researchers, we believe this may be the first pregnant hybrid porpoise that has ever stranded.” Further testing on this porpoise will be conducted including genetic testing on both mom and fetus, as well as skeleton comparisons to both species of porpoise.

As always, please contact the Stranding Network  at 1-800-562-8832 whenever you find a marine mammal – live or dead – on shore.

Let’s look around & see…

Message in a bottle – here’s a story from KOMO 4  about a bottle that was discovered at Eagle Cove – you’ll love it. Great way to start the day – and thanks, Judy for passing it on!

• Tomorrow is Island Rec’s Open House at 4:00pm (till 6:30) at the Grange to share the results of their big survey, and giving the public more opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about Island Rec and its future.

Drop by & see how it turned out, and let Island Rec know what you’re thinking! (Free cookies!)

Need your grass cut? Need your weeds whacked? My friend Tyler is a FHHS soph (next year) who is looking for yards to love...he mowed mine last week & did a super job! Call him at 541-852-1791 (yeah, that's an Oregon cell, but he's here.)

• Eileen wants you to know there’s a fun & easy way to find out more about the town you live in – here’s more:

Hey Ian, please share this with everyone.  This is a great way to get to know Sandy Strehlou and look around town.  Plan to stop for coffee or chocolate or ice cream or some yummy snack afterwards!  Bring your visitors, friends and relatives too.

KNOW YOUR ISLAND WALK!
Sat. May 28, 2011, 1pm
“A Walk Through Historic Friday Harbor”
Meet Sandy Strehlou, Town of Friday Harbor Coordinator of Historic Preservation, to walk historic neighborhoods in town.  Meet at Sunken Park, located at Nichols and “B” Streets.  Length is 1 mile/two hours.  Terrain is sidewalks.  Rating is ‘easy.’  Dogs on leashes are welcome.

Drop by & see the San Juan Distillery!

• Haley wants you to know there a new distillery on the island:

Just in time for summer! The San Juan Islands’ new and only distillery is opening its doors in grand style – with a celebratory weekend featuring tastings of all of their products near the apple trees of the island’s long-standing ciderworks, Westcott Bay Cider.

Over the course of the holiday weekend, the distillery will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.

Although the distillery’s tasting room is only just opening, the Spy Hop Gin Harvest Select and Apple Eau de Vie are already causing a stir. Just last month, the Apple Eau de Vie took gold at the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry competition, and bronze at the judging of the Annual American Distilling Institute. Although it hasn’t been entered into any competitions yet, the distillery’s Spy Hop Gin Harvest Select has caught the attention of the area’s top local chefs through private tastings.

“I am really looking forward to our Apple Harvest dinner this October featuring a menu inspired by and paired with the San Juan Island Distillery Spirits,” said J. Alphonsine Haslet-Phillips, Executive Chef, Coho Restaurant.  “Their gin, eau de vie and ciders are all lovely, and demonstrate the passion and care that Suzy, Hawk and Rich have for craft spirits.  On a recent tour, I was able to see the where the apples are grown and the spirits are crafted. I was impressed by the beauty of the place and their devotion to the process of creating their unique products.”

Nestled near the shores of Westcott Bay, just around the bend from Roche Harbor, the distillery is tapping into the flavors that make the island so unique. Both Apple Eau de Vie and the Spy Hop Gin Harvest Select begin with Cider from Westcott Bay, but then get their individual qualities from locally foraged island botanicals such as blackberries, madrone bark, rosehips, and lavender.

The Ciders are already available at island groceries and at many stores in the Seattle area, but the Spy Hop Gin Harvest Select and Apple Eau de Vie can only be purchased at the distillery or through the Friday Harbor state liquor store.

Dan & San Juan Transit (sanjuantransit.com) got rolling last week for the summer - I caught one of the buses at Roche Harbor last weekend....

Going back to the past with the movies….

Posted May 24, 2011 at 7:12 am by

Grandma Gertrude Kinnaman checks in with Donna & Dean before his presentation at the Palace Theatre last weekend. Dean visited with a small crowd about the history of the theater he grew up in...

Anybody who has lived on the island knows the Kinnamans, but did you know their role in making the town’s only movie theater what it is today?

Saturday, Dean Kinnaman gave a presentation at the movie house he grew up in. The building was constructed in 1915, and Town Historic Preservation Coordinator Sandy Strehlou reviewed the place’s history for the years that pre-dated the early 1970s, when Dean’s dad Ray bought the business. It was a family business in the truest sense, with his mom, him and sibs Donna, Diane & David all running the different parts of the shows – concessions, projector, cleanup, ticket-taking.

I loved Dean’s laidback talk, and the way he set the audience at ease with his easy-going review of his family’s involvement at the movies…which continues! Although the family no longer owns the business, his daughter Kyra will be working there this summer.

Celebrating Janet…

Posted May 23, 2011 at 7:43 am by

Janet and the band in New York in 2008. Photo by Kelly Snow.

There’s no one with more energy & creativity & heart, and she gives it all to the kids – FHHS’ music & band teacher Janet Olsen is retiring this spring, and she will be much missed.

Besides the regular school program & competitions, every 3-4 years, Janet and the band take a trip somewhere – in 2008, they played in New York on the way to the Caribbean (right); this spring they went to Hawaii, thanks to the fundraising efforts of parents & friends & supporters of music in the schools. Janet has been the key to an incredibly successful kid-centered program – she’s awesome!

The middle school band has been a great place for kids to get their start....photo by Judy Chovan.

At this week’s Wednesday concert, you’ll have a chance to celebrate her & her retirement – here’s more from Kelly Snow:

As you probably know, Janet Olsen, our beloved high school and middle school band director, is retiring at the end of this school year. In honor of her 11 years of teaching countless Friday Harbor students to: play instruments, read music, be a part of a band, and perform before audiences across the country, we are hosting a reception for her immediately following the Spring High School Band Concert at the Community Theatre on Wednesday, May 25.

The free concert begins at 7:00; the reception will begin around 8:00. Anyone who has been involved with Mrs. Olsen and the band is encouraged to attend and wish her well in her retirement!

Around the island….

Posted May 20, 2011 at 7:26 am by

John Miller caught this fox last weekend relaxing between the drops...he calls this photo "Splendour in the Grass."

Let’s see what’s going on…

Leslie at Friday Harbor Espresso had a visitor yesterday - this dog was a sweet girl who hung around for quite a while...do you know who her people are?

Kevin Roth is going to the Welding Radio at Bellingham Tech College this weekend – here’s what that looks like (looks like fun!)

Bryn Barnard has the second of his three author talks at the library tonight at 7 – here’s more. People told last week’s presentation was wonderful…

• I hear there’s a way you can help: Christina DeLorenzi tells me there’s a Silent Auction/Spaghetti Feed Benefit for Carmen Dixon (to help with costs related to breast cancer surgery) on Sunday, June 5. Here are the details…and a chance to help a fellow islander.

Garage sales! Two I heard about – The Montessori School on Park Street has theirs starting at 9am tomorrow, and Tim Barrette and Laurie Paul‘s is at 154 De Haro Lane (that’s off Yacht Haven Road) from 9am-2pm.

• The Rumor Mill has an AfroBeat Dance Party on Saturday with Seattle’s Cascadia ’10, kicking off at 8pm. Tonight it’s NPO, and there’s jazz on Sunday with the Davis George Band at 4pm, and the San Juan Jazz Quintet with Jill Urbach at 7:30pm.

Come see Dana Roberts' work at waterworks gallery's opening for him & Matthew Gray Palmer this weekend!

• The new show at Waterworks Gallery starts this weekend – here’s more from Ruth:

May 21 – June 18
Dana Roberts – Oil Paintings
Matthew Gray Palmer – Sculpture

This show is a wonderful pairing of two San Juan Island based contemporary artists. Both artists share a love for the organic and natural world, presenting the works in different mediums.

Dana Roberts‘ newest oil paintings are partly abstracted thoughts and musings about dresses using the lexicon of color and shape, surface and line.  Matthew Gray Palmer‘s unique sculptures in metal, stone and wood continue his exploration of the transcendent through hybrid mythological images blurred with abstraction. The show opens this Saturday, with a reception for the artist and runs from May 21 – June 18.

• Reminder from Mary-Brooke at Mirabella Skin Care & Massage: Now that we HAVE sun, be sure & use sunscreen (and lots of it!) to look after that beautiful skin of yours!

• Secret weapon: How ironic that the Mariners won yesterday’s afternoon game in Seattle because one of my favorite players, Torii Hunter, lost a fly ball in the…(are you ready for this?) sun. People don’t come here expecting that….

Weeds or wishmakers?

Val Curtis passed this along – here’s a bit from Mental Chew…do you see them as weeds or wishmakers?

Yesterday at the Town Council meeting, Mayor Carrie Lacher made this cool declaration, with Mike Vouri & more in attandance:

By official proclamation, Saturday, May 21, will be declared National Kids to Parks Day in the Town of Friday Harbor. Mayor Carrie Lacher hereby encourages all visitors and residents of the Town of Friday Harbor to join with other municipalities across the country to take our children and grandchildren to a neighborhood, state or national park on this day and every other day of the year.

National Park Trust’s (NPT) first annual National Kids to Parks Day on May 21st is a special opportunity to join with children and families in this grassroots effort to celebrate America’s parks. Recognizing that young people spend far too much time indoors and far too little time appreciating America’s magnificent national, state and local parks – NPT is mobilizing kids across the Country for a nationwide park play-in.

To date, over 2,000 kids have committed to visit a park on Saturday, May 21 by signing up online at NPT’s Buddy Bison web site (http://www.BuddyBison.org). Buddy Bison, the wooly mascot and driving force behind NPT’s popular educational program, “Where’s Buddy Bison Been?” encourages children to “explore outdoors, the parks are yours.”  When they visit a park on May 21st, kids can tweet or send in photos to [email protected] to have their pictures posted online on a national map commemorating the day.

The Town of Friday Harbor has several urban green spaces that are welcoming to visitors of all ages including Sunken Park on A Street and Memorial Park at the foot of Spring Street. San Juan County is also host to many local, state and national parks that offer green havens, stunning vistas, sheltering trees, wildlife, and visitor amenities.
