It was good: Good Food!

Posted April 29, 2010 at 11:11 pm by

That showing of Good Food (the movie) went great last weekend – and Maureen & Linda wanted to say thanks:

The Land & Sea  wants to thank everyone who came to see “Good Food” – we had a great total turnout for the three showings, and we heard good things afterward!

We would like to thank Friday Harbor House and manager Michael, sales coordinators Wendy, Lisa Duke, and chef Joseph Foriska for their help and enthusiasm, and the great venue. The filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin were able to spend a few days on the island because of the generosity of Marion Melville and Doug Bison, who provided accommodations. Thank you, also, to Jim & Christina at Heritage Farm and their intern Zach for hosting a potluck for the filmmakers, and for the delicious roast. We also want to thank Ian, for his help, and publicizing this community event.

The filmmakers have asked us to pass on a request – “GOOD FOOD” is scheduled to be shown soon on PBS, but may only get good time slots if enough viewers request that. Continue Reading

Sofia & Tristan....

Sofia & Tristan....

Blues Night is tonight (Wednesday) from 6-9pm at its new home at the Peppermill – see ya there!

• Three months ago, Jessica Johnson (from Wells Fargo) brought baby Sofia into the world – you can see how big she is now, in this picture (right) of her with big bro Tristan.

• The word from the hospital in Seattle is that Jess Oldwyn‘s surgery went well yesterday. Yay!

• Speaking of operations, looks like Jim Maya‘s work on his rotator cuff is going to be put off till the fall.

Tyler Ryan

Tyler Ryan

Mary Karen Ryan tells me her son Tyler‘s play opened in Portland last month & went well…sure would be cool to have seen it. Maybe it could be staged here…?

Speaking of plays – Helen from Island Stage Left says it’s going well:

Only two weekends left of “The Clean House.” Many people are coming back for the second and even third time and we have had to turn a few people away already, so don’t put it off if you haven’t yet been. The buzz has been tremendous and the laughter uproarious – the rest you have to see to believe!

We play Thursdays – Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 4:00 at the San Juan County Fairgrounds. The show closes May 9th.

Arrive by 7:00 to be assured of a seat. The space is heated, too!

We look forward to seeing you soon.
All the best,
Helen

Deb Nolan from the school district says you can still jump in on these parenting workshops:

Parenting Workshops for Teens are ongoing

Shahn McGuire, LMFT, will continue to facilitate parenting workshops on Monday nights from 5:15 to 6:45 in the Middle School Commons. The general themes are listed below, but these are open forum discussions so topics are apt to change:

May 3rd:  Navigating the real world
May 10th:  Dealing with conflict and setting limits
May 17th:  Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask

You are invited to attend whatever sections you are interested in… Middle school students can use Room 8 (our auxiliary computer lab and board game room) while their parent is in the Commons.

General feedback from the first workshops included:  “It’s so great to know I’m not the only one dealing with these things!”  and  “I thought your child was perfect; what a relief to hear they’re just like my kid.”

We are asking that participants pay $5 per workshop ($20 for the four
weeks).

Sandy’s got a good show going:

Their slogan is, “The Buck Stays Here!” Exemplifying that slogan, is there large contribution to this long running event which spreads its returns among eleven local non-profit organizations.

Also, we are proud to announce that the winning team will have their names engraved in a perpetual trophy, This trophy will be titled “The John Linde, Islander’s Bank” trophy which will be permanently displayed in the lobby of the bank. This in tribute to our late beloved judge and friend, who played in this tournament each and every year and always gave so much to our community.

Share the Road!

Share the road!

Share the road!

It’s coming up next month – here’s the deal from our Trails Committee & Island Rec:

“Share the Road” bicycle celebration!
A community event on
San Juan Island, May 15

The San Juan Island Trails Committee invites all residents and visitors to join us for the first ever “Share the Road” community bicycle celebration on San Juan Island Saturday May 15.   ‘Share the Roadʼ will begin with a bicycle parade through town, followed by a short celebration and then an island bike ride. All events begin at the San Juan County Fairgrounds with registration opening at 10:30 a.m.

Families, teens and adults are invited to participate in the parade, celebration and bike ride. Scheduled in conjunction with National Bike Month, our goal is to create a community bicycle event that will increase awareness, emphasize safety, and reinforce the responsibility of both motorized vehicles and bicycles in sharing the road. Educational materials, signage and demonstration will be provided to insure that all understand the “Share the Road” concept.

Come and register early for this free event.  All riders 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, bikes should be in working order, and use of a helmet is required while cycling.  A limited number of helmets will be available at the ride. The parade will begin at 12:00 noon with refreshments at the fairgrounds afterwards.

The celebration will conclude at about 1:15, at which time we will embark on a community bike ride where, as a large group, we will demonstrate how to responsibly share the road. Those who participate in this longer ride will have the choice of turning around at the American Camp visitor center (10 miles round-trip) or continuing to the Cattle Point Interpretive Center (16 miles round-trip) before returning to the fairgrounds.

This Island Rec event is being organized by the Bike Paths Group of the Trails Committee. More information is available on the Trails Committee web site .

Ride your bikes and bring the whole family to join in the ‘Share the Road’ celebration!

Books to read….

Posted April 27, 2010 at 2:20 am by

Hey – remember about a month ago or so I asked what books you think every islander should read?

Here are the books that people sent in:

Amy Wynn suggested:

1.  Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea”

2.  Mary Kalbert’s “Reflections on Life in the San Juan Islands” nice little familiar island vignettes.

3.  Steve Martini’s “Critical Mass” (because it takes place on the islands and you’ll recognize stuff and that will make you feel like a superior islander.)

4. “How to Be Happy Damn-It!” Nice little mental health instruction manual.  I don’t like the title but the stuff inside is pretty useful

5.  The Bible, especially Ephesians Chapter 4–all about speaking the truth in love, not scheming against your neighbor, living in unity…all that community building stuff.

From Pamela Williams:

The book I always have loved–and wished I was her—is The Curve of Time by M. Wylie Blanchet.

From Tom Schultz:

Please add “The Light on the Island” by Helene Glidden. They are printing the 50th year edition this year. Marcia and I read this in the late 1980’s while camped on Patos Island (where most of the story takes place).

From Robin Blair:

I think “The Curve of Time” by M. Wylie Blanchet should be at the top of the 5 Books Every Islander Should Read About Island Life list.

Here are my five:

Living High, by June Burn
– Those books with the photos about Friday Harbor (Mike & Julia Vouri), Roche Harbor (Richard Walker), and the new one for San Juan Island (Mike & Julia, this spring) that they prepared with the Historical Museum. Love those.
Snow Falling on Cedars, by David Guterson
Whale Tales I & II by Peter Fromm
Island Bush Pilot, by Roy Franklin

Ferry with the evening sun setting the water on fire....

Here’s a poem for the day, for you as you continue to wait for your dreams to open themselves to you:

It’s the dream we carry
that something wondrous will happen
that it must happen –
time will open
hearts will open
doors will open
mountains will open
spring will gush forth from the ground
that the dream itself will open
that one morning we’ll quietly drift
into a harbor we didn’t know was there
