See those little ads down the side of the page? I’m happy to pop yours in there, and link it to your website so folks can find out all about what you do.

It’s $75 a month. Or $750 a year, which is two months free (I just said that. I KNOW you can do math in your head.)

Just call & let me know when you want to get going! 378-7275. Thanks!

When we were young & calling the class of 2027!

The Class of 2010, before their time....

The Class of 2006, before their time....

This is gonna be fun.

Let’s start with the picture above…click here to see a full screen version (much cooler). That’s the kids who became the Class of 2006 when they were babies (That picture was taken by Kathy Ballard, by the way.) See how many of you know – they didn’t change THAT much.

Later, in 2006....

Later, in 2006....

Fast forward to Graduation 2006 – here are about 50 photos I took in June ’06 of everyone graduating – click here to see the babies all grown up.

Now, here’s the next stage, in a note I got from Alisa Schoultz:

Calling Class of 2027 High School Graduates!

If you have a child that is born between September 1, 2008 and August 31, 2009 please bring your baby for a group photo on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2010 at 10 AM to the PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Kathleen Ballard Photography is donating her time to capture the bunch; a similar photo was taken of the babies in the Friday Harbor High School Class of 2006 (see photo, courtesy of Kathleen Ballard Photography). Island stuff…

Kate & Dori (with sons James & John) are having a great time at Stillpoint School - that's them at last May's Children's Festival. D&K have more kids ahead - the twins are both due in May.

There’s all kinds of stuff happening around the island – let’s check:

The Knowledge Bowl is coming! It’s set for the fourth, next month…this year they have several raffle items, including a trip for 2 on the Victoria Clipper – here’s more from Nancy Young:

The 17th annual Knowledge Bowl will be held Thursday, February 4th ,   at the Community Theatre. Our fabulous Friday Harbor Jazz Band will begin performing at 6:40 pm, and the FHMS PTA will offer delicious bake sale treats.

The competition begins at 7:00 pm, with teams consisting of 8th grade students, a 9th and 10th grade team, and a 11th and 12th grade team going head to head with four local community service groups: Kiwanis, Soroptomists, Lions, and Rotary Club. Teams will match wits to answer challenging  and sometimes tricky questions on a range of topics, from physics to local history. The event is emceed  this year by Brent Snow, with entertainment during intermission by Friday Harbor Jazz Band.

The Knowledge Bowl is presented each year by the San Juan Public Schools Foundation. Through its two main fundraisers, the Phone-a-thon and the Business Partnership Program, the Foundation  has raised over $80,000 in  the 2009 /2010 cycle. These funds  were used to enhance local public education, such as  High  School  algebra  textbooks, 6th grade math and reading  textbooks,  Middle School math textbooks , and the  FH Labs program at the high school, as well as other projects throughout the year.

The ticket prices for this community event are just $5 for adults, and $3 for kids.  The last few years  have sold out, so come and cheer on your favorite team!!

Little Green, by Jason Napier

Little Green, by Jason Napier

• Just noticed that Dominique’s House store downtown (next to Coldwell Banker, where the old Park Service office used to be) is all cleared out, as Dom consolidates everything into her store at Roche Harbor.

Teri at Be Chic Boutique tells me she’s gonna move her shop into that space in February (to open in March).

New stuff by Jason – I love the way Jason Napier makes bronze come alive – here’s a piece (right) called Little Green (here’s more about it). He’s away from the island, on tour – this weekend he & Danielle are in Arizona, and then are heading for Florida for another show.

• Did you know Mary-Brooke offers Lymph Drainage Therapy at Mirabella Skin Care & Massage over at 425 Argyle Ave? Here’s more about it.

• The Peace Corps has a great year ahead, in part because islanders Rowan Braybrook (from Spring Street & Middlebury ’09) and Arielle Mancuso (FHHS, and McGill ’09) are heading for Madagascar & Rwanda respectively, this spring.

• Drop by Kings Marine: Today through Monday, Jan 18th: All Pendleton blankets are on sale, 40% off! Also on sale: kids and adults hats and gloves 40% off. Drop by – upstairs to Kings Marine.

• Just heard from Madison Leiren & her latest endeavour:

This is Madison, just writing to let you know about my newest adventure in the art world.

I’ve just recently started designing jewelry to help pay for my upcoming college semester. I’ll be studying Business with a small emphasis in either art or fashion design at Pasadena City College, where I’ll obtain my Associate degree, then transfer to either a University of California school or a California State University.

With my interest in art, I thought that this would be a great way to express my creativity and gather a little much needed money for my classes, books, and living expenses.

I decided on the name Adrianna Leiren to honour my grandmothers, Anna and Adrien. Family is of big importance, and I want to go to college so that I can help further my family by being educated and being able to hopefully give back to them one day.

Here’s a link to my online store: http://www.adriannaleiren.etsy.com/

If you have any requests (Valentine’s and Mother’s Day is coming up!) Please let me know. I can easily design and make jewelry to match any colour, theme, etc.

That's Marc about a year ago at Farmer's Market with partner Taylor Bruce and kids Rory (kinda hiding) and Zach.

You may have heard that Marc Reshovsky passed away in November at the age of 52. He had a lifetime of success as a cinematographer which included working on Oscar-winning shorts “Trevor” and “Lieberman in Love,” and his work had received the Eastman Kodak Lifetime Achievement Award in Music Video Cinematography.

His boys Rory & Zach had attended Spring Street School & been involved in music here on the island. Here’s more, from Variety.

One island helping another….

It’s a terrible, nightmarish time on the island of Haiti, and several of you have written about how helpless it can feel in the face of all this.

President Obama has asked former presidents Bush & Clinton to help raise money & awareness for the rescue/relief effort, and Mr. Bush said, “The most effective way for Americans to help the people of Haiti is to contribute money. That money will go to organizations on the ground who will be able to effectively spend it.

“I know a lot of people want to send blankets or water. Just send your cash.”

It’s gonna be a long haul…but these are some places you might consider offering your help. Here are organizations you might consider (offered as suggestions by San Juan Update readers this week), and I’ll keep that Doctors without Borders button to the left on this page.

The American Red Cross
Text “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 (billed to your phone)

From the mailbag: A sunny day at South Beach, sent in by Ken Olson (thanks, Ken!)

I was clearing out the e-mailbag last night…let’s see who wrote in:

Q: What’s with the bear with no head earlier in the week? R.L.

A: That’s from Photoshop class a year ago, where we practice putting people’s heads on other people’s bodies, like they do on the Internet. Don’t worry, no bears were injured in the making of those mastheads – it’s all Photoshop, not reality.

Q: Thanks for the update in the newsletter. There is another San Juan Island resident with a show on KLOI– Lucia Plumb Reyes—“All the Young Dudes” airing on Mondays. – Kathy Booth, KLOI on Lopez

A. I’ve been listening to islanders Laura & Zach & KLOI regularly on the Internet station since I found out about it a couple of weeks ago…pretty cool what they have going. Check it: KLOI.

Keeping people out....

Keeping people out....

Q: What do you know about those barrier deals that were set up to keep us all out of Lot B next to Roy’s & Mi Casita? Does the state ferry system REALLY believe the main lot is gonna be overloaded during the winter? P.D.

A: Good question…the other night I wanted to go to eat dinner at Mi Casita & ended up parking two blocks away, so I know what you mean. I wrote Laura at WSF to ask her what the deal was, and here is her reply:

Ian,
The cable stanchions at Lot B in Friday Harbor were installed for the following reasons:
• Lot B is a WSDOT-owned lot intended for vehicle staging, not for public use. The lot has always had towing signage to warn people of possible vehicle removal.

• Individuals were parking in Lot B for personal use and when WSF needed to use the lot for its intended purpose, removal of those vehicles has been problematic.

• The needs of the lot are intermittent. When ferry service or unique vehicle type or size requires vehicles to be staged in these locations, the lot needs to be clear.
WSF staff regularly find the stanchions moved or unhooked, and unfortunately this requires staff time to replace and reinstall. We very much appreciate the community understanding our need for these lots to be clear.

Q: What is your favorite quote RIGHT NOW, as you open this e-mail? No peeking – right off the top of your head! Speak! – L.C.

A: No pressure.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately how we humans (and yes, I like people – they’re my species!) need to adapt to what’s going on around us, and change not just what we do, but how we think about things. That made me think of Toffler (this is a paraphrase):

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

Griffin Bay Book Club: Wesley the Owl

Stacey & friend

The club meets on Friday, January 29th (I’m telling you now so you can read the book!), and Nancy Larsen says you’ll like this one (Wesley the Owl):

Griffin Bay Book Club is reading Wesley the Owl, by Stacey O’Brien, for the January meeting. This a love story that begins when O’Brien adopts an injured baby barn owl and embarks on a relationship that will last almost two decades.

O’Brien has written a heart-felt account of their complex emotional bond, her startling discoveries about barn owl behavior, intelligence, communication skills, and emotions. This book is at once playful and informative, brimful of anecdotes (and photographs) showing us Wesley’s capacity to reason and communicate, to offer enduring love and loyalty. Don’t miss it.

Full house at Paradise Lanes last night....

When I dropped by Scott’s bowling alley last night when I was on my walk, he said leagues are going full speed, but there’s still a chance to play, because some teams need subs or other members – call him at Paradise Lanes if you’re ready to play, baby.
