Where is tomorrow's farmer?

Posted September 2, 2009 at 12:58 am by

Linda Cobos told me about this little video – I sure enjoyed watching it, and I think you will, too. Here’s more from the Slow Food/Land & Sea blog:

We just got this note from our friend, filmmaker Mike Hurwicz of Orcas Island: “I am happy and excited to inform you that we have completed a ten-minute video, “Where Is Tomorrow’s Farmer?”, that includes footage of the Farmers Market, Thirsty Goose Farm, Heritage Farm and the Community Garden at Ackley’s Corner.”

The entire video,’Where Is Tomorrow’s Farmer?’, was shot on San Juan Island. It looks at the issue of bringing younger people into sustainable farming, and features commentary from island farmers and other community members who know how important it is that we all look at the value of of this kind of work, and how important it is that the age-old knowledge of how to feed ourselves is retained and passed on.

We’d like as many people in the community as possible to see it.

So, send a link to your friends, and when you see Jim Lawrence, Jim Sesby, Bequin, and the other farmers and community members who are in this video, strike up a conversation, and see if there’s a way you can take part in giving our kids an opportunity to carry on this important and rewarding work in our community.

The Lizards'll be here…

Posted September 2, 2009 at 12:03 am by

The Austin Lounge Lizards will be here Saturday – here’s more from Jan at the Community Theatre:

Knock Your Reptilian Socks Off !

Some of you may remember them from the 2003 San Juan County Fair…and you probably remember laughing to the music…

The Austin Lounge Lizards return to Friday Harbor to help us have a fun Labor Day Weekend when they take to the Whittier stage THIS Saturday, September 5 at 8 pm.

For 29 years, the Lizards have developed their trademark song combination of highly literate, sharply-pointed lyrics that poke fun at politics, love, religion and culture in general. The quintet’s latest single, “Too Big to Fail,” by Lindsey Eck, targets corporate excess and congressional pork and is from an album being worked on by the Lizards, whose all-boy band has been joined by two equally witty women.

The group’s version of Irving Berlin’s “(I’ll See You in) C-U-B-A,” was featured in Michael Moore’s 2007 Sicko, as a flotilla of ailing 9-11 workers seeks medical treatment in Cuba.

Lost calf…. seen it?

Posted September 1, 2009 at 10:49 pm by

Amy Traxler from the Whale Museum’s Marine Stranding Network asked that we get the word out:

HAS ANYBODY SEEN A STRANDED KILLER WHALE CALF?

On Sunday, August 30th a private boater broadcast a report over the marine radio, Channel 16, that they had discovered what appeared to be a killer whale calf floating off of Lawrence Point near Orcas Island. The observer stated that the placenta was still attached to the carcass.

Helen in the kitchen...

You should go see “Julie & Julia” at the Palace Theatre this week…and when you do, think of Helen King at Highland Inn. She reports:

As a new owner/innkeeper of the Babbling Brook Inn in Santa Cruz, CA I entered a baking contest for the B&B innkeepers in the state annual conference in 1987 in Santa Barbara. The judge was Julia Child who gave me a blue ribbon and first place award for my “Pookie Muffins” I’m happy to share that recipe with you. Here it is!

Are we the sunniest spot in Washington?

Cliff Mass

Cliff Mass

Last week, climatologist/meteorologist Cliff Mass came to speak here on the island – you probably dropped in to hear him.

He says while he was here he noticed the real estate guys promising 240 days (or more) or sunshine if you live here – so he looked into it, as only a weather expert could. Here are his observations. (And here are some other observations, from his talk, about us.)

Tigers get it going….

The senior Tigers won 40-something to nothing on Saturday here on the island to get their season off on the right foot…check here for their schedule (and the two other teams) & more.

The guys return to action in two weeks, after taking this coming Labor Day weekend off.

Gearing up…

Drop stuff in, help out!

Drop stuff in, help out!

Saw this barrel at Marketplace, so I called over at Islanders to see what the deal was – and it’s a good idea. Here’s more, from Michele Morton:

Every year teachers are found buying school supplies for their students who can’t afford them.

To help eliminate the burden on our teachers and help classroom learning, our Islanders Bank Team is sponsoring a “Gear Up For Our Schools” Campaign.

The Team hopes to collect:
Black, Blue, Green, & Red Pens School Glue & Glue Sticks
Highlighters Scissors
Water-Based Markers Rulers
Dry Erase Pens Fine & Bullet Tip Notebook & Graph Paper
White Board Erasers Spiral & Composition Notebooks
Water Color Paints Index Cards
Pencils & Sharpeners 3 Ring Binders with dividers
Colored Pencils Calculators
Erasers Pen, Thumb and Flash Drives
Pencil Pouches & Boxes Rolls of Clear Contact Paper

The Islanders Bank Team has provided collection bins for school supplies at Friday Harbor Drug, The Office Supply Store, Market Place, and Islanders Bank lobby. The campaign runs from August 12th through September 11th.

The bins will be picked up and delivered to the Superintendent’s Office to be
disbursed out to teachers in need of the donated supplies..

Please help the Islanders Bank Team “Gear Up For Our Schools!”

How the video contest is going….

Posted August 31, 2009 at 11:10 pm by

Just got a note from Darren – I was wondering how the video contest is going – here’s the scoop:

Hope all is well in Update-land! Speaking of that, we just wanted to give you a quick “update” on the San Juan Islands Vacation Video Contest:

More than 7,000 total videos have been watched in less than two months! Entries have streamed in from visitors around the country, including one from a couple in Denmark that spent their holiday in the islands. There are more than 30 official entries in the $6,367 contest sponsored by 28 local island businesses, the Chambers of Commerce on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Island, the San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau, and sanjuanislandsTV.com.

The contest is being promoted on the home page of each island Chamber of Commerce website, as well as sanjuanislandsTV.com, YouTube, Google Video, Twitter, MySpace, and the SJIVB. During July, it was a Top 20 “Most Responded To” video in the Travel and Events category on YouTube. It has also been picked up by several national video contest websites. Posters of the contest can be found on the Washington State Ferries and in the terminals serving the San Juan Islands, Sidney, BC, Port Townsend, and Whidbey Island routes.

The contest promo video itself has been watched well over 2,000 times, with the entries totaling views in excess of 5,000 times. Every time someone watches another person’s vacation video from the San Juan Islands, it’s essentially promoting the fun of visiting here. And that is what this is all about…

Cheers!

Late ferries, and parking lots in Fogust….

Even Lot C was full on Sunday....

Even Lot C was full on Sunday....

Whoa, it’s happening today, too…WSF reported the Kaleetan started the day 25 minutes behind schedule; yesterday (Sunday) the Yakima was as much as two hours behind, resulting in lots B & C on either side of Mi Casita overflowing.

Meanwhile, the ferry-slowing fog continues…both Chris Teren & Sandy Buckley told me these are the last days of Fogust, and I’d say I’d have to agree.

Looking down Argyle on Sunday morning in the last days of Fogust - from the top of the hill (outa the fog) towards the bottom of the hill (in the fog)....
