Eddie Nash & the baseball team came close to glory on Saturday...and made an island proud of them.

In a weekend of close calls & close finishes, the Wolverines did the island proud. Here’s where the playoffs ended up (and some keep going!):

Baseball: Our top-10 ranked baseball guys gave Kalama a game of it, as Richie Ochoa brought two home with a single late in the game. The ump called senior Michael Knowles out at the plate with the tying run, though, as Kalama escaped with a 3-2 win, and FHHS was left dreaming about what might have been. Great season for one of the best groups of guys we’ve had playing for us for a while. Way to go, boys!

Softball: Talk about a task – the girls had to win three on Saturday to get to state, and they came oh-so-close. FHHS won the first two, then tireless workhorse Kerri Goff pitched her third game of the day as the Wolverines nearly picked off Orting, losing 3-1. Coach Kevin Carlton kept the girls positive & smiling through a long season, and got ’em playing well when it mattered most. Awesome job by great kids.

The FHHS Golf team heads out today to Richland Golf Club for the state finals… on the boys’ side, senior Jordyn Taylor placed last year, and has to be on a short list of favorites to take state this year. He’s joined on the links by Cody Price, Dustin Howard, and Tyler McKee. The FHHS girls’ squad is represented by Megan Cuomo…the kids play today & tomorrow to see who’s on top.

Meanwhile, FHHS Track is represented by Kayla Short in both the javelin & long jump (she qualified at the meet at King’s on Saturday), while Otto Schmidt came just short on Saturday in his long distance events. Kayla will travel to Eastern Washington University this Friday for the State Track Meet.

Tennis wrapped up their season in Seattle last weekend, with both sides – girls & boys – running into the 1A players who play all year, down there.

Boys Tennis saw Michael Sandifer and Josh Lehr win their first round match at the Quad-District Tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, but lost their next two matches eliminating them from the tournament.  Peter Duggins competed on the singles side where he lost his first and second matches also eliminating him from the tournament.

Girls Tennis had 4 players competing at their Tri-District tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on 5/21.  Rebecca Leff and Charlotte Guard competed in singles, and Hannah Snow and Jenny Dunn competed in doubles. Each lost their first two matches eliminating them from the tournament.

Debbi Fincher got to Seattle for a baseball game with her husband last weekend, the night Randy Johnson pitched:

Hi Ian,

Brad and I recently went to a Seattle Mariner’s game and enjoyed a “little” Ichiro… HA!

We’ve always enjoyed seeing the different pictures you display on your website and the one in particular, you appearing to be holding the sun in your fingers, like this one.

So, we couldn’t resist to send this to you. See what you’ve started! HA! (Seattle won in the 12th inning, by the way!)

In 2001, the Land Bank initiated efforts to purchase conservation easements over a block of contiguous farmland on the west side of Cattle Point Road south of Fairway Drive.  Two of those easements were completed in 2003, including Heritage Farm.  The acquisition of the conservation easement over the Howard property completes protection of this area. I’d like to be
Under the sea….

Well here’s your chance…Peggy Long wanted you to know she & Kurt are bringing the island’s divers together:

Introducing The San Juan Islands Dive Club!

Join us May 28th at 6:00 pm for the inaugural meeting of The San Juan Islands Dive Club. The meeting will be held at Naknek Charters and Diving, located under Downriggers Restaurant.  Join us for a barbeque (prepped by Mike Close, who makes the best hot dogs on the marina!): hamburgers, hot dogs and refreshments.

Bring your ideas on how we can bring the island dive community together for fun and education. This is a great way to socialize with other divers, find a dive buddy, organized shore and boat dives, develop more educational opportunities.

We want everyone’s input!  For more information please call Kurt Long at 378-9297.

Doing their hair at Haley's...

Looks like they had quite a time at Haley’s on Monday night…click here (right here!) for a larger photo, and here’s what Sandy Buckey says:

Last night (Monday), some of the hottest hair trends arrived on scene at Haley’s to celebrate Andrea Berlatsky’s birthday – and we all tried to make our favorite stylist proud. Onlookers were treated to some of the trendiest island ‘dos, replete with memorable highlights, fun bobs and stylish curls. It was a real “blowout!”
