ChamberLogoThe Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor has been serving San Juan Island for over 30 years. Since 1982 APS-FH has provided homeless dogs and cats safe haven, medical care, nutritious food and loads of love and affection.

The organization also promotes humane education and a low-cost spay/neuter assistance program. The shelter receives no state or county funding except for a portion of the county dog tags and its continued operation depends entirely on the generosity of its supporters.

APS-FH embarked on the New Home – New Hope capital campaign in 2014 to raise the funds necessary to build a much needed new animal shelter. The many years of wear and tear and island growth have rendered the current animal shelter inadequate to safely accommodate the ever increasing number of animals in need of assistance.

And with the possibility of the Port of Friday Harbor and the FAA choosing not to renew another long-term lease with APS after 2017 in lieu of future port property development, the organizations felt strongly it was time to find a new location for the shelter. With the help of a generous couple here on San Juan Island, APS has been able to purchase a 5-acre piece of land at 994 Cattle Point Road. Continue Reading

rotary-logoOn October 24th, Rotarians around the globe will observe World Polio Day, established by Rotary International over a decade ago. Since 1985, Rotary has contributed nearly $1.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries.

Since its inception, Rotary of San Juan Islands has donated over $53,000 to support polio eradication with the support from their members, community events Rock the Dock and Concours d’ Elegance.

The disease remains endemic in two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria was recently removed from this list.

Rotary is dedicated to ending polio in our lifetimes. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match all donations to Rotary for polio 2-1 through 2018.

10,000 th Visitor to IMA

Siri Dow at IMA - Contributed photo

Siri Dow at IMA – Contributed photo

In September, Siri Dow became the 10,000th visitor to the San Juan Islands Museum of Art since its opening on February 14, 2015. Siri, shown here on a Spring Street School art outing, is studying the sculpture of ceramic artist Kathy Venter whose exhibition Immersion is currently on display the Atrium Gallery.

Over 600 students in over 30 groups have visited the museum since it opened its new building on Spring Street. These museum visits supplement their classroom work. This number includes classes from Lopez and Orcas, and from public and private schools, the mainland and kids’ camp classes such as Island Rec, and the French Camp on Canoe Island.

For years, IMA has worked to help fill the budget gaps left in arts education in our public schools. Arts education has always been part of our mission where IMA creates arts exposure and educational opportunities and provides students, residents and guests with the language of expression making us advocates for our most creative selves, the environment and our communities.

IMA has a dedicated volunteer, Linda Marsaudon, who develops study materials and prepares the students before they come to the museum. She returns to the classroom after the tour to complete the educational adventure and expanding the arts experience. Continue Reading

SJI Real Estate Market Summary

Merri Ann Simonson checks in with a 3rd Quarter Summary of the local real estate market…

Merri Ann Simonson - Contributed photo

Merri Ann Simonson – Contributed photo

In reviewing the year-to-date activity for 2015, the real estate market volume on San Juan Island reflects an increase of 7.5% for the period of January through September as compared to the same period in 2014. This gain is less than the percentage we enjoyed during the same period of 2013 over 2014 when the increase in volume was 33%. As for the number of transactions, we are down 6% as compared to the same period in 2014. This decrease is

attributed to the higher number of high-end sales that have occurred this year; fewer transaction numbers but higher sale prices contributing to the volume.

Our median prices peaked in 2007, hit the bottom in 2013 and we have been in a gradual recovery ever since.

transaction-recap-report

A gradual recovery is a description which can be frustrating for some of the property owners in our market. We have yet to enjoy appreciation or enough inventory absorption to add upward pressure on our prices. Although our closing volume is an increase over last year, we are replacing the sold properties in some categories just as fast with new listings and maintaining a steady inventory level.

Rebecca Smith is October’s EMT of the month – Contributed photo

Rebecca Smith has been an EMT since 2005. She was active in the EMT Association for several years as the Treasurer. She served as a fire fighter for 17 years and a Fire Commissioner for 6 years.

She is retired from the “real” world as a corporate executive.

When asked what her favorite part of being an EMT is, she answered; “Responding to help people that I know, because they are comforted by someone walking in their door that they recognize.”

Rebecca is often seen representing the agency at community functions and gatherings.

We appreciate her time, expertise and quick wit.

This Saturday, October 24, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, join fellow community members for an interesting and beneficial workshop in passive solar design. Discussion on passive solar design will include the principles of thermal mass; how to collect and store heat in various materials like water, rock, earth.

Learn to read sun charts, calculate solar potential for use as photovoltaic and thermal systems as well as greenhouses as a part of your design to provide space heat, cooling moderation, and to grow food and heat water.

Learn about designing air core floors, natural convection and the venturi effect and the integration of solar cooking.

Cost of the workshop is $69.00.

Friday Harbor Salmon Classic replaces Resurrection Derby

The first annual Friday Harbor Salmon Classic will be held in Friday Harbor December 3-5, 2015.  This derby will replace the Resurrection Salmon Derby which has moved to Anacortes after being held in Friday Harbor for 5 years.

Hosting the Resurrection Derby in Friday Harbor provided an economic benefit to businesses at a slow time of the year.  It also showcased all that Friday Harbor has to offer.

A decision was made to keep a fishing derby in Friday Harbor, and that decision became the first annual Friday Harbor Salmon Classic.

Tickets for the Friday Harbor Salmon Classic, Dec 3-5, went on sale last week online at www.fridayharborsalmonclassic.com, Friday Harbor Ace Hardware and Bellingham’s Lake Union Sea Ray.  Only 100 team tickets will be sold for $425 each. Included in the ticket price is free moorage and an awards banquet at Friday Harbor Brickworks.

In addition to $17,500 in prize money, the Friday Harbor Salmon Classic is also a part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series. All participants are eligible for the grand prize boat drawing.

Some of the stuff donated to APSFH Saturday at Jack’s 12th Birthday Party – Contributed photo

Judith Carter and her trusty dog, Jack, proprietors of The Barking Bird, celebrated Jack’s 12th birthday this past Saturday by hosting a benefit for the animal shelter.

Several dogs and their owners attended the event and enjoyed refreshments, including cupcakes custom made for the occasion, donated by “Cakes by Felicitations”. Party attendees brought donations of items from the animal shelter’s wish list and more than $100 was made from the sale of raffle tickets to win a gift certificate to Paws in the Water.

A delightful time was had by all and Judith and Jack, as always, were wonderful hosts.
