It’s time for the October edition of Chamber Chat, written by Lauren Cohen, Co-owner San Juan Canvas, LLC and Chamber of Commerce Board President…

What a beautiful fall we are having. It is nice to still see so many visitors on the island, especially on the weekends. Hopefully all of our businesses are benefiting from the creative and fun shoulder season activities like Savor the San Juans and The Friday Harbor Film Festival. Great thanks are due to the organizers of these events and also to the Visitor’s Bureau for their outstanding promotion of our Islands.

Member Social
Thank you so much to The Whale Museum for hosting the October Chamber Social. Executive Director, Jenny Atkinson, her Board of Directors and staff served an “over the top” array of food and drink. We all had the opportunity to learn more about what is happening at this true community treasure. We are so proud to have The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor. Now is a GREAT time for locals to visit while it is a bit quieter. They are located at 62 First Street and open from 10:00-4:00 daily. Continue Reading

Animal Shelter Announces New Volunteer Program

Posted October 14, 2015 at 5:37 am by

dog-lifering-thanksIf you’ve always wanted to become a part of the life-saving volunteer program at the animal shelter – now is a great time to get involved!

The Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor is in need of volunteers to help with the day to day care and feeding of the homeless animals in their care. The APS volunteer program allows people to select the type of volunteer position they’re best suited for from a wide variety of jobs including, Dog Walking and Socialization, Cat Companion, Kennel and Cat Room Cleaning, Laundry, Office Assistant and Ground Maintenance to name a few.

The new volunteer program will also include Pet Ambassador positions for those who wish to select an individual shelter pet to mentor on a weekly basis until that pet is adopted. Shelter Outreach Coordinator, Jan Murphy, says, “The Pet Ambassador program is a great way to get involved and truly enrich the life of a shelter animal.” She adds, “Many of the pets here at the shelter, especially some of the older cats, have been here for a long time, and having a special someone in their lives will make a huge difference for them.”

If you’re interested in becoming an animal shelter volunteer, you are invited to attend a Volunteer Orientation at the Animal Shelter, 111 Shelter Road, Tuesday, November 10 at 5:00. Refreshments will be served and shelter employees will be on hand to answer questions. For more information call 378-2158.

The talk is one in a series of Fireside Chats the medical center is offering as part of PeaceHealth’s “Healthy You” program.

As director of the Center for Mission, Fewing has oversight for clinical ethics consultations and the medical center’s ethics committee, mission integration, and spiritual care.
