Pet of the Week

Harley-1

Harley came to us a couple of months ago as a stray and due to her small size we assumed she was a kitten. According to Dr. Leonard, she’s actually more than a year old – and one of the sweetest cats you’ll ever meet! She’s extremely cuddly and affectionate but has a playful side as well. She gets along well with other cats and would do fine with a well-behaved dog, we think. Don’t forget – our October special, “$15 Felines” lasts until the end of the month! Stop by the shelter and meet our wonderful cats and kittens!

Hobbes’ Minced Meat Pie

Posted October 22, 2013 at 5:30 am by

Hobbes educates us a bit with his lead-in to this recipe handed down from his family in London…

hobbes-pie-2

In England what’s known in the US as hamburger is called minced meat or ground beef. I grew up a poor Cockney boy in Hackney, London’s roughest part of the East End known as the “smoke.” It was not unusual to see London’s most notorious crooks and killers like the Kray Brothers, and a couple of the Great Train Robbers walking the streets. My Grand Dad and Uncle were prize fighters (bare knuckle fighters) so it seemed like they were in the same circles, but I’m not sure.

My Grand Dad even traveled to the US to fight fights that the mafia arranged, they didn’t last long with him, about three punches and it was all over, he was a real tough nut. I remember when he was traveling from France to somewhere and he got into a verbal fight with my grandmother and he jumped off the ferry and swam home, roughly five or so miles! Needless to say he was a very strong swimmer, he had arms like telephone poles and hands like hams.

My Mum made this meal when things were a bit tight money wise, it’s cheap to make, and oh so good.

hobbes-pie-1Recipe for one 9″ pie:

1 carrot, finely diced
2 stalks celery, finely diced
1 onion, finely diced
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 piece of bacon, cut into strips
1 sprig fresh rosemary, leaves picked & chopped
1 sprig fresh thyme, leaves picked & chopped
1/3 stick of butter
salt & pepper
pinch cayenne pepper
splash of red wine
1 c beef stock
1 T flour

Add your favorite pie crust recipe.

Using a heavy saute pan, place the butter into the pan over medium high heat. When the butter starts to foam add the veggies and cook, don’t get too much color on them, they just need, to be soft. Set aside in a bowl when done, and then brown the bacon, set aside when done along with any of the fat. Now brown the beef. Transfer the meat to a bowl when done. Return the pan to the heat and add the wine, reduce until it’s almost all gone, then add back the bacon fat and stir in the flour, using a whisk, toast the flour to get some color on it, the longer you cook the flour the darker it will get, then slowly stir in the the stock and whisk. Cook the stock down a little, then add all the ingredients together – the meat, bacon, herbs and mix well.

What you need to end up with is a somewhat wet mixture that has a little body to it. Sounds complicated but it’s not really. Place the mixture into a 9″ oven pie dish, and cover with your favorite pastry, making sure to seal the edges and cut a hole in the pastry to allow the steam out. Place on a baking sheet and cook in a 350* oven for about 20-30 minutes or until the crust is golden.

Bon Appetit! Chef Hobbes

Posted October 21, 2013 at 5:45 am by

SJI Cheese is hosting an event this coming Friday. Here’s their announcement:

GreenVineCoverDear Friends,

We are excited to introduce writer, poet, and wine educator Shannon Borg and her new book: The Green Vine – A Guide to West Coast Sustainable, Organic, and Biodynamic Wines.

“…more and more people are thinking about where their food comes from—and wine is food, too. At root, it’s an agricultural product that faces many of the same industrial, environmental, and economic issues as that sustainably-raised steak or fresh home-grown salad on your plate.”

She will discuss her book and we will be pairing cheeses with wines from her book.

So, please join us!

The SJI Museum of History & Industry

Posted October 21, 2013 at 5:42 am by

Here’s an excerpt from the latest Historical Museum newsletter:

historical-museum

Work has begun on building our dream! The recent history of this project has been described in newsletters for some time. Now the vision is taking shape. Walls are going up, materials are being sourced and we are raising dust!

The last newsletter described the plans for creating a proper museum in our barn. It introduced the concept that San Juan Island developed through industrious work in the areas of fishing, farming, logging and lime.

If you have seen our displays at the Pig War Picnic and the County Fair, you know that we have followed up on that description. We have rolled out our image of the Museum of History and Industry and have also initiated the fund-raising program that will be needed to achieve it. Click here to read the newsletter (PDF).

Book Talk & Slide Show With Seattle Author Leslie Helm
Griffin Bay Bookstore
Saturday Evening, October 26, 7:00 Pm

Griffin Bay Bookstore & the San Juan Island Library are excited to co-sponsor an evening book talk and slide show with Leslie Helm, author of Yokohama Yankee: My Family’s Five Generations as Outsiders in Japan on Saturday, October 26, 7:00 pm. Make sure to attend this special event and hear Leslie Helm talk about a remarkable story: his family’s long and ambiguous ties to Japan.

Leslie Helm’s decision to adopt Japanese children launches him on a personal journey through his family’s 140 years in Japan, beginning with his German great-grandfather, who worked as a military adviser in 1870 and defied custom to marry his Japanese mistress. The family’s poignant experiences of love and war help Helm embrace his Japanese and American heritage. Yokohama Yankee is the first book to look at Japan across five generations both from the inside and through foreign eyes. Continue Reading

SJI Real Estate Market Summary

Posted October 18, 2013 at 5:40 am by

It’s time once again for our local real estate summary, brought to you by Merri Ann Simonson of Coldwell Banker. Here she is with this year’s latest report:

merri-annIn reviewing the year-to-date volume for 2013, the real estate market volume on San Juan Island reflects an increase of 9% for the period of January through September as compared to the same period in 2012.

Most of the gain was actually in the third quarter where the volume was 59% greater than the third quarter of 2012; this is a great improvement considering we were down 23% at the half way mark on June 30th. As for the number of transactions, the gain over the 2012 January through September was 9% as well.

Scenic Byway Summer Shuttle Bus Report Released

Posted October 18, 2013 at 5:39 am by

scenic-byway-logoThe San Juan Islands Scenic Byway Partnership recently released the final report on a two-year National Scenic Byway grant project to reduce vehicle traffic on the ferries and county roads during peak summer travel periods.

The report summarizes promotion and operation of the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway Explorer Bus on Orcas and San Juan Island Byway routes during the past two summers. The grant allowed for a shuttle bus, operated by San Juan Transit, to provide service on the entire San Juan Island scenic byway route and to serve most of the scenic byway route on Orcas Island for 10 weeks both summers.

During summer 2012, 415 potential visitors completed a survey and downloaded a 2-for-1 shuttle pass; 46 of the passes were redeemed on both islands. This summer, 686 passes were downloaded and 186 were redeemed. Between June 21 and Labor Day this summer, San Juan Transit carried an average of 127 passengers per day on San Juan Island (the highest day was 264 passengers and lowest day was 68) and an average of 9 passengers per day on Orcas Island (the highest day was 59 passengers and lowest was 2; two factors are important to note: the shuttle schedule coincided with the inter-island ferry, and a majority of riders were boaters mooring at Deer Harbor or Rosario who wanted to visit Eastsound). Soccer Referee Clinic

Posted October 18, 2013 at 5:30 am by

Here’s a note from Travis Ayers, President of San Juan Soccer…

soccer-ballDear Soccer Fans,

We have the possibility of conducting a referee clinic on SJI during the 1st weekend of November. With a few hours online and 8 hours on Saturday or Sunday, you could become certified to referee soccer matches and get paid for doing it! As before, SJ Soccer has agreed to refund the cost of the clinic for anyone who gets certified.

You can also just use this opportunity to learn more about the Laws of the Game without getting certified. Please let me know if you are interested by Wednesday 23Oct13 so I can see if it can be arranged.

Thank you,
Travis Ayers

Thanks!

Here’s a thank-you letter from the mailbag:

Dear Editor:
Many thanks to the San Juan County Land Bank and the San Juan Preservation Trust for sponsoring the timely Conservation Easements seminar for lawyers and lay members of the community. Nationally recognized for his expertise in this area, Seattle attorney Konrad Liegel did an outstanding job of covering the fundamentals, drafting and ethical considerations of creating and administering conservation easements. This kind of added value is just one more reason to love living and working here. On that note, we would be remiss not to mention that San Juan Fire District #3 hosted the group and Doug Strandberg furnished a tempting assortment of doughnuts and muffins!
