Friday Harbor High’s “Little Women” runs Thursday through Sunday this week….

Posted January 10, 2012 at 1:19 pm by

Isabel, Fiona, Libby & Sarah are the "Little Women".....

Don’t want to miss this one – here’s more from Jan Bollwinkel-Smith at the Community Theatre:

High School Takes on Little Women

Friday Harbor High School students meet the challenge of character development as they bring the joys and hardships of the inseparable March sisters to life on the Whittier stage this Thursday through Sunday, January 12-15.

Director Bristol Whalen says she chose to present the classic story set during the Civil War in part because it is inspiring and takes a real look at the value of family.  Centering on outspoken Jo, motherly Meg, quiet Beth and worldly Amy as they wrestle with the problems of poverty and everyday life and wait for their father to return from the war, the play holds many messages that still ring true more than a century later.

“While there is some unbelievable humor, the play will ask the actors to dig deep and play serious roles,” said Whalen.  “I wanted to do more character-driven plays at the high school.”

The business partner for this performance is Kings Market.  Tickets are $16 for adults and $8 for student reserved.  $5 Student RUSH will be available at the door.

The SJCT Box Office is open Tuesdays-Fridays, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and one hour before any performance.  Call 360-378-3210, or surf to www.sjctheatre.org.

EMS gets grant from the Rotary Club…

Posted January 10, 2012 at 11:06 am by

Presenting the check: (from left) Lainey Volk, Director of Education EMS, and San Juan Island Rotary Club members, Dick Shorett, Mike Griffin past president and Carol Linde, Secretary

Just heard this from Janice Peterson:

Emergency Medical Services Receives Rotary Grant

Representatives from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Headquarters in Friday Harbor, and the San Juan Island (Friday Harbor) Rotary Club, have announced the successful completion of a District Grant from Rotary District 5050 to the EMS San Juan Island Education Vocation Center Outreach Program.

The grant was the culmination of combined efforts from the Friday Harbor Rotary group and local emergency services personnel to provide needed equipment in challenging economic times.

The funds enabled EMS Friday Harbor to purchase new and more technologically sophisticated overhead projection and the associated sound system for the EMS teaching program.

This teaching aid provides community members and others with specific skills and knowledge that will better position them in emergency situations.

In 2010 over 1200 community members and others have taken part in some type of education connected with this program.

Examples of programs offered include: Teaching AHA First Aid,  CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, Basic Life Support, Pediatric First  Aid, Family and Friends course as well as programs presented for students in our local schools.

Snowy owl at Boundary Bay (story below) at 4pm last night...photo by Jim Maya

Let’s see what’s going on around the island…

• Pretty exciting stuff at the gym this afternoon, as LaConner comes a-calling. The Braves boys (11-2, 6-0 in league) kick it off at 4 with the Wolverines (8-3, 5-1 in league)…LaConner whipped Concrete 85-42 last weekend in their last game

Meanwhile the LaConner girls will put their 7-3 record on the line (5-1 in league after a dominating win over Concrete last Friday) against the Wolverines (8-2, 6-0 in league). The girls play after the boys, at approximately 5:30pm.

Pizza (yum!) with Hobbes....

• Pretty good eating with Hobbes…have you been following his blog? If you’re looking for ideas for dinner tonight, this is a great place to start….he just posted a recipe for Pizza With Three Cheeses and Prociutito this morning. Scout it out!

• I asked Jim Maya over the weekend if he had seen any of those snowy owls everyone’s talking about, and he said no, but he went and checked them out yesterday, going on the ferry to Anacortes, then the border, then around to Boundary Bay, just past White Rock. Here’s his report:

I’ve been reading about and seeing photos of the Boundary Bay, BC snowy owl invasion. Finally today (Monday), I just couldn’t stand it any more.

I grabbed my camera bag and headed to the ferry. Of course it was late and I started worrying about the light. I finally got there around 4:00pm, at the end of 72nd, near the Boundary Bay Airport, near the Tsawwassen Ferry Dock, BC. There were well over twenty of them, just sitting along the path, watching their admirers walk by.

It was pretty amazing for me. Akin to my first bald headed eagle, or my first resplendent quetzals in Costa Rica or my first wild orcas.

• You heard about the wedding show that Scott Hale’s putting on at Islands 123 West for future brides & grooms, on the 27th-28th? Here’s the scoop.

San Juan County Park, Sunday morning. Update photographer Tamara Weaver notes: "Don't you love the off-season? When I first moved here just three years ago, I learned to say 'What a lovely gray day.' And, you know, I meant it this morning.

Moonset…

If you haven’t already, look west & see the beautiful moon as it sets in the sky as it lightens…

G’morning to you!

Around our island….

Mary-Brooke & Paul demonstrate ballroom dancing at the Open House for XYZ Movement Arts last Saturday...

Bunch of one-liners for you today:

Lost - yours?

• Someone on Craigslist (here’s the posting) found a lost dog – here’s what he says:

Cattle male dog with caramel/auburn coloring found on Roche Harbor Rd. not far from cow statues 1-7 Saturday at dusk. No collar and friendly. Wandering in ditch and on road. I have him, please email if this is your dog or you know who it belongs to.

+++++++++++++++

Full moon tonight! Here’s the place I look to find out stuff like that (besides looking out the window).

++++++++++++++++++++

• What if (dreaming, which is where we get our better ideas) we could just buy straight from our food providers? A township in Maine has passed a law allowing just that…check this out & see if this isn’t a step in the right direction, in a small place like ours.

Instead of saying “It’s just a dream” it’s time to start saying, “I had this GREAT dream last night – let’s do it!”

+++++++++++++++++

So, while the Yakima is getting fixed (it's been down since last Thursday), the 64-vehicle MV Chetzemoka will be pulled from the Keystone/Port Townsend route & the Evergreen State will take over the Anacortes/Friday Harbor route. The Chetzemoka was launched in late 2010, and will look after the interisland run....

++++++++++++++++

• Remember the Twelve Days of Christmas deal that the Chamber of Commerce & Wolf Hollow sponsored last month, where 12 stores around the island were the twelve days? Folks could visit them all & fill out a thing that said they did, and submit it for a $300 dollar basket of stuff from the participating stores. The winner was announced Saturday: Nakiya Scott (seven years old) and her mom (didn’t say) won and received their prizes. Congrats!

Tamara Weaver reports: The fox in the juniper visited our yard last week--so elegant with chocolate brown socks and golden cat-like eyes. Mythical, with a sense of humor.

New storefonts around town, and more….

Posted January 9, 2012 at 1:45 am by

The IMA (Islands Museum of Art) is moving across from Market Chef & next to Gallery San Juan this week (with a show opening in a couple of weeks!) Director Jennifer Elise (left) and Board member Marilyn Luckman could use a hand setting things up, if you have some extra time this week...

Lots of changes in town – do you know where everybody is?

• Closed for the month – Cotton Cotton Cotton, Pablito’s, and Backdoor Kitchen.

Also, Island Studios is now closed Monday-Wednesday for the winter, except Monday, February 13 (the day before Valentine’s Day, sweetie.)

• After nearly 16 years, Mi Casita moved the week before Christmas into the old Homesteaders spot at the Best Western. Gregg & the gang are off to a great start in the new place – it’s awesome! Be sure & swing in & check it out, and watch out – it’s been pretty crowded!

• The IMA (photo above) has moved into the vacant spot where Jenn Rigg’s Loea Design shop used to be (she’s set up in the Whidbey Bank building now…)

Lavendera Day Spa is moving into & remodeling the place where the IMA was last week, next to the Little Store…they have an off-site place for appointments this month, so you can still get services – be sure & call at 378-3637.

• Meanwhile, Carolyn & Brian are closed at the Sandpebble as they take the month off to re-model – it’ll be great to see what it looks like when they’re done!

Closed for January - the Sandpebble is being remodeled.

Orcas in the news….

Posted January 9, 2012 at 1:14 am by

The transient orcas were out in Speiden Channel yesterday...here's one, in a a photo courtesy of Jim Maya

If you’re keeping up with our orca friends, here are things you’ll want to know:

• The transients were out in Speiden Channel yesterday. Jim Maya caught some amazing photos of them capturing & eating a Steller sea lion, since they eat mammals, unlike the resident orcas (you can see them on his Facebook page – search: James Mead Maya).

• There’s this cool NPR report about Tucker, the poop-sniffing dog who is invaluable as a researcher ’round here…here’s more.

• If you liked that, you’ll love this article about Tucker by Lisa Lorden.

• Finally, I am so proud to share with you Spring Street International School junior Melisa Pinnow’s incredible video about Lolita, the orca from our waters who was captured by the folks for Sea World in ’76, and who is way overdue to be freed. She makes the case here (she did an amazing job, don’t you think?):

Who is YOUR favourite?

Posted January 9, 2012 at 12:47 am by

Fun little video…not related to the island exactly, except that every mom to whom I’ve shown it responds, a bit smugly, “Well, what did you expect?” Enjoy….

What’s up….

Whales in our mist....photo by Jim Maya

Let’s take a quick peek around & see what’s next:

• Great night to catch our high-flying Wolverines at the gym, with basketball games tonight at 6 & 7:30 (love that late boat!) as Friday Harbor takes on visiting Cedar Park Christian…see you there! The girls scored 11 in OT to win earlier this week & the boys are working hard – they rock!

++++++++

A sampling of nuts from Tim Dustrude's photo of the day earlier this week - nice balance of color & shadows...photo by Tim.

• I know of three folks who are doing picture-a-day blogs for the year – the deal is, you gotta take a photo a day & post it, till New Year’s Eve 2012. I know people who have done it before, and it’s tough!

The San Juan Islander (Sharon & Matt) are doing it, and so are Val Curtis & Tim Dustrude. Besides the challenge, it’s cool to see such cool photography!

Catching the little moments between people - this is siblings, foot to foot in Val Curtis' photo of the day earlier this week...

++++++++++++++++++++++

• Wondering what the next two months look like, weather-wise? So was NOAA, and they wrote it up.

+++++++++++++++

• Here’s the word from Teri at BeChic Boutique:

With the new year comes our annual inventory!

In order to lighten our load before Sunday, we decided to have a 2 day SALE! We are offering 30% off of everything except jewelry and consignment items.  As a bonus, this will include an extra 30% off the already marked down prices on the sale rack. Friday, Jan. 6th and Saturday, Jan. 7th from 10am to 5:30pm.

Note:  We will be closed Sunday, Jan. 8th for inventory

++++++++++++++++++++

• I have to read & interact with dozens of people a day…this little flow chart helps keep me sane, or some approximation thereof….

A little friendlier goes a long way…

Posted January 6, 2012 at 12:22 am by

The Sidney, BC terminal welcomes folks with signs the speak to the friendship between the US & Canada, and have a visitors' center right there in the terminal...it feels like they're glad to see you!

You know, one of the things I love about living here and having friends & family visit here is how friendly it can be.

I mentioned to you a couple of years ago that I believe a person needs twelve hugs a day to be emotionally healthy, and it’s easy to hit quota here. People like each other, and it’s not uncommon to see people visiting in Kings for long stretches in the produce department, catching up & laughing & digging each other.

Pretty sure we can do better than this, as the first sign visitors see at the Anacortes toll booth....

And…we like our visitors. They’re great to have around, we like showing off the island & its waters to them (and telling them how we love & care for the creatures & wildlife around us), and they bring a good energy to us each year when they come see us, mostly because they’re coming for a good time.

So, I guess I’d like to propose that we put more energy into welcoming them with our signs in Anacortes & on the boats. Other marinas & ferry terminals do…I spend a little time in others, and frankly, they’re smokin’ us.

Most of the folks I’ve asked about this here say, “It’s not us, it’s WSF.” I suppose, but what if we ask them to brighten up the welcome to our island? I’ve met WSDOT Ferries Division Assistant Secretary David Moseley & some of the other WSF bosses & they sure seem like nice folks – I’ll bet if we mention this to them, they’d do something.

Mention it to them. I guess I just did.

Hey, guys, help us make our visitors feel welcome!

Kari rocks!

Posted January 6, 2012 at 12:02 am by

Kari has made Soundwatch what it is. As she steps down from running the program, there is much to celebrate in what she's achieved....way to go, Kari!

Jeff Hanson from the MRC has more:

Kari Koski Honored by the Marine Resources Committee

Kari Koski, who is leaving her role as the Director of the Whale Museum’s Soundwatch Boater Education Program program after 18 years, was honored by the San Juan Marine Resources Committee (MRC) with the Master Steward Award Wednesday, just the second such award presented by the group.

The vice chair of the MRC, John Aschoff, has been a volunteer on the Soundwatch boat for four years and he spoke about Kari’s work for the southern resident killer (orca) whales. “It’s important to note how special these whales are,” he said. “They are residents and we’ve had a chance to observe them and know them, their family relationships and their culture. This is a rare thing. And they are truly endangered. We hope not, but it’s quite possible that they may not be here in 50 or 100 years due to limited food, toxins and vessel traffic.”

Kari has been involved with Soundwatch since nearly its inception and because of her work, what could be chaos out on the water around the whales is instead something quite different.  Whale watch operators, fishers and recreational boaters have learned how to conduct themselves in the whales’ presence, and that has helped protect these wonderful endangered animals. John credits Kari’s passion, but also her multitasking ability for this accomplishment. “She works with everyone and everything including the whale watch industry from both sides of the border, recreational boaters, wildlife agencies, boat drivers, interns, volunteers, fundraising, and more, and she does all this with diplomacy and a cool head. She defines grace under pressure.”

Kit Rawson, MRC member since 2001, added a few words. “The Soundwatch program embodies all of the principles the MRC is trying to promote, particularly volunteerism and personal responsibility. Of course, Kari was way ahead of us, and she helped developed the Marine Stewardship Area and get it right,” Kit said. In an interview last year with People for Puget Sound, Kari said that upon her arrival in the San Juans, she “fell in with a whale crowd.” Kit added “All of us here, whale crowd members or not, are very fortunate that she did.  Kari’s dedication and integrity are unmatched.” He noted that she has stood up for her beliefs and the MRC and the whales have benefitted.

Kari proudly donned her new Master Steward cap and will soon have some time to pursue other interests. When asked what they might be, she said, “I’m sure there’ll be a lot, but, who knows, I might find time to volunteer on a Soundwatch boat!”

Passing: Elizabeth Welch

Posted January 5, 2012 at 11:05 am by

Elizabeth

I love what Elizabeth did for our island…she’ll be much missed…

Elizabeth Madge Welch Ballesteros died on January, 1, 2012, New Year’s Day evening at her home in Friday Harbor.  At her side were Elizabeth’s daughters Raquel Cook and Rebecca Allen along with her sister Judy Welch. She is also survived by brother Robert C. Welch, Jr. and children Samuel Ballesteros, Jr., Matthew Ballesteros, Daniel Ballesteros as well as her 10 grandchildren.

Elizabeth had retired from 15 years of teaching in Chula Vista, CA and moved to Friday Harbor, WA to be near her sister Judy.  She became a contributing member of the community by singing in the San Juan Singers, a volunteer with the San Juan Library and the fundraising Library Beading Group.  She was a great lover of music and played the organ.  Elizabeth Welch is known by many locals and artists for serving as the recent President of the Island Arts League on San Juan Island.

During her teaching years she helped develop a drama program where her 4th and 5th grade students presented rather sophisticated productions wearing costumes cleverly crafted to fit her young actors.  She was greatly admired for her creativity and dedication to her students. At the same time she completed her Master Degree in History at San Diego State University.  Before becoming a teacher, Elizabeth served as a missionary to Colombia with her husband and family for seven years.

She is greatly loved by her family and community and will be remembered fondly by new friends and old.  A memorial service will be held at Chula Vista Baptist Church on January 14 and she will be buried near her parents at Glen Abbey Cemetery in Bonita, CA.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elizabeth M. Welch Fund at Wells Fargo Bank, P. O. Box 189, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
