Backswimmer...photo by Cyndi Brast

I asked Cyndi what kinda bug that was in the picture she took – she gave a complete answer:

This kinda bug is called a Backswimmer…in the family of Notonectidae.  Here is some neat info on them……”Backswimmers are predaeceous, feeding on other insects and occasionally on tadpoles and small fish.  They frequently attack animals larger than themselves and feed by sucking the body juices from their prey….These insects will bite people when handled (look out!) , and the effect is much like a bee sting. ” Borrer Triplehorn Johnson, An Introduction to the Study of Insects, 6th Edition.

Great to see Michael & Sandy the other night...

Killer whale on the west side of the island this week...photo by Jim Maya

The pictures on the side of Ace have a party to go with ’em – here’s the word from Annie:

Hey Ian, I hope you can make it to our celebration this Sunday at 2 o’clock, we are closing off the street, the grill will be going and music by the Tritone, aka the Duotones with special guests……

Here’s more about the project:

San Juan Island Mural of Commercial Fishing
Ace Hardware building, at 195 Nichols Street

Fine arts painter and former commercial fisherwoman, Annie Howell-Adams, unveils a monumental mural portraying one hundred years of commercial salmon fishing in the San Juan Islands. The mural, located on the north side of the Ace Hardware building, at 195 Nichols Street, will be introduced to the public on September 12th at 2 PM. A dedication and celebration will follow.

The idea of a public arts project gained momentum as the island community became involved. Historic glass plate negatives, hand colored photos, and scrapbooks were gathered from fishing families.

The artist has given visual expression to important local history, showing the pride Friday Harbor has with it’s long connection to salmon fishing. The project was realized by Danmoor LLC, who made their building available and privately funded the mural. Twelve feet by sixty, the mural is painted on a series of aluminum panels. Each panel tells its own story, collectively portraying the island’s fishing heritage. Howell-Adams sees this process as the best in a community arts project, a way for Friday Harbor to tell and share its fishing story.

Glad ours aren't like THAT.

• Have you been to South Beach lately? Glad it’s not like that here (above).

In October, the Chamber of Commerce is putting on this show, but you need to sign up sooner than that – here’s the deal, from Vernadel:

• The Visitors’ Information Center run by the Chamber of Commerce needs a bit of help – here’s what Vernadel’s looking for:

Are you willing to share your cheerful, helpful attitude with visitors and your community?  Do you enjoy helping people and want to learn more about your community?  The San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Information Center would like to discuss how you can assist visitors with directions, phone numbers, Island information and much more!  Come be part of our Volunteer team,  working a few hours a week or on a on-call basis.

Skagit Valley College/San Juan Center - a shining light upon the hill, if you ask me....

School got underway for almost everyone the past couple of weeks – now there’s a chance for you to sign up for your classes at Skagit Valley College (including those computer classes I teach!) Randy Martin reports what the coming term looks like:

Study Locally with Skagit Valley College San Juan Center

It’s not too late to register for Fall Quarter classes and workshops at Skagit Valley College San Juan Center.  Fall Quarter begins Monday, September 20 at SVC San Juan Center in Friday Harbor.

Academic transfer degrees, GED prep courses, English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, career training, computer workshops and community education courses are offered at the center. In addition, students can study anytime, anywhere with online courses from a variety of disciplines through the eLearning program.

“You can study locally and learn about the world from top-notch faculty who teach here in the islands and online,” stated Randy Martin, SVC San Juan Center Director. Prospective students can call for an appointment with San Juan Center Advisor/Counselor Sandy Harold. Sandy is available to assist any potential student with guidance through the admissions and registration processes, as well chart and plan an educational journey.

Interested students can apply and register in person or phone Program Coordinator Jennifer Krajack at the San Juan Center in Friday Harbor (360-378-3220).

Give yourself a treat!

• You gotta pay more at the transfer station – here’s the report from the County:

Effective October 1, 2010, people bringing only recyclable materials to solid waste facilities in San Juan County will pay a flat $5 fee. Recyclable materials include co‑mingled recycling, batteries, oil and antifreeze.

The fee will not be charged to people who also bring garbage or other types of waste for which there is already a fee. For instance, customers disposing of small amounts of trash will continue to pay only the existing $12 minimum garbage fee whether or not they also bring recycling. Continue Reading

Tonight at the Rumor Mill….Gertrude’s Hearse

Posted September 10, 2010 at 12:39 am by

Gertrude’s Hearse

Peggy & Oren have a show tonight – here’s their report:

Friday Night, Sept. 10th, the Rumor Mill welcomes back to the island Gertrude’s Hearse, “putting the FUN back into Funeral”!

Gertrude (grrr-trood) – An old-time name representing the style of music from which the band bases its sound. They are equally comfortable playing acoustically, around a single can microphone, or plugged into a PA on-stage. Versatility has been an important factor in their early success as a band.

Hearse (her-sss) – A car used to transport a coffin to a burial site. It is also a somewhat taboo word in the English language, not often used and retaining a sort of mystery. The name of the band is hard to get out of the heads of those who have said it aloud or read it in print. It also offers a theme for the bands logos, artwork, and trademark. This too has played a key role in the bands early notoriety in the area.

The undertakers and country-rock-folk-grassin’ singers gaining quite a reputation in the Pacific Northwest are commonly known as Gertrude’s Hearse. They are fast becoming legend, often imitated, and never reproduced. Look for them makin their way through your town soon. Mothers watch yer daughters, fathers git yur guns, brothers watch yer tounges, and everyone git ready for a shin splittin good time when Gertrude’s Hearse rolls into town!

Hope to see you there,
Oren & Peggy

Remembering 9/11…

Posted September 10, 2010 at 12:07 am by

The Island Guardian’s Jack Cory (on behalf of the American Legion) says there’s an event planned for Saturday:

9/11 remembered...

9-11 Memorial Planned In Friday Harbor

On September 11th there will be a memorial ceremony at 09:11 hours. to honor the memory of the civilians and members of the uniformed services who were killed by the September 11th attacks.

The uniformed services will be representing by local fire fighters, police, emergency medical services, Home Land Security personnel; and the American Legion Honor Guard will represent the military.

The ceremony will be held on San Juan Island at the foot of Spring Street at Memorial Park.  There will be a speaker’s spot in the park, and emergency vehicles in the east half of the circle.

It is expected the Town of Friday Harbor’s antique fire engine will be located in the center of the arc of emergency vehicles, with the audience assemble on the sidewalk to the east of the park, looking westward toward the speakers with the antique fire engine between them. That will allow for the use of the fire engine’s bell for a “Last Alarm” ceremony to honor the fallen.

The Town of Friday Harbor will lower the Town flag to half mast, and read a proclamation recognizing the 9-11 anniversary.  The public is encouraged to attend this annual event to honor the victims and heroes of the 9-11 attacks.

Fundraiser: The Kiwi Classic Golf Tournament is Saturday!

Posted September 10, 2010 at 12:02 am by

Phil

Shoot, seems like just about everybody knows Phil McKee…he’s been dealing with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and Laura tells me it’s going pretty well, as such treatments go.

His friends & family (that would be the entire island, I believe) are putting on a golf tourney that starts at 1pm Saturday, which will include an auction, and music (The Sliders & The Rhythmatics) late into the evening. Laura said to be sure & tell you there’s no charge for the dancing & music & to be sure and come!

Check the Facebook page for details – see ya there!

The runway is done!

Posted September 10, 2010 at 12:01 am by

Airport manager Dave Ryan says the job is complete – the runway has been closed since Tuesday….here’s his update:

Crack sealing, asphalt repairs and fog sealing is complete on the runway and taxiway “Alpha.”

It looks great! We re-opened at 6:00 am this morning. Construction crews will continue to fog seal near hangars and perform clean-up and striping through Saturday, so please use caution for personnel and equipment on and around the airport. There may be some areas that will require a few more hours to dry especially those around the south hangars and leeward hangars.

I’d like to remind everyone that we are required to wait 30 days for the coating to “cure” before final painting and striping can be accomplished. This will require a couple of nice sunny days and probably a one night only closure around the second week in October.

Thank you so much for patience during this project. Your airport is a jewel and this maintenance helps keep Friday Harbor Airport in top shape! As always, if you have any questions, please contact me.

Thursday’s news call…

Found an abandoned mailbox on Pear Point Road last week as we were walking around the loop...these yellowjackets had set up housekeeping inside. Reckon that's why it's abandoned...photo courtesy of San Juan Update Wildlife Photography, long as we don't get stung.

Sunny day ahead…let’s see what’s up!

A zeppelin, over the island....photo by Erin, I think

Erin Ancich sent over this photo of a blimp over the island from yesterday – with a bit of a question…what’s up?

Here’s the rest of the story, from KPLU.

• When the One More Time Jazz Band plays tonight at the Rumor Mill, they’ll have Jill Urbach along for vocals, as well as rising star Hanna Burke (FHHS ’07)…Hanna’s headed back for her second year to that dramatic arts school in LA next month, so this is a nice chance to catch her – she’s an awesome singer! Show starts at 7pm.

• If you haven’t seen Chamber Music San Juans lately, this weekend is the time to do it – here’s more from our friends at the Community Theatre:

Chamber Music San Juans’ ensemble favorites are joined by internationally-acclaimed tenor Benjamin Butterfield on Saturday, September 11.

Canadian tenor Benjamin Butterfield

Butterfield is considered one of Canada’s most successful and sought-after artists and has performed throughout North America and Europe as well as Israel and New Zealand. The San Francisco Chronicle proclaimed Butterfield a “musically arresting presence.”

Butterfield’s operatic credits include debuts in The Barber of Seville under Carlo Rizzi at Welsh National Opera and The Magic Flute with New York City Opera. In concert he has appeared in Britten’s War Requiem with the London Symphony Orchestra and the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki. Butterfield’s wife, soprano Anne Grimm performed with CMSJ in 2007.

CMSJ Artistic Director Patricia Kostek says Butterfield’s Friday Harbor appearance will feature composter Gerald Finzi’s A Farewell to Arms, in remembrance of September 11. Other works will include Mozart’s sublime Quintet for Clarinet and Strings and works performed by ensemble members violin/viola duo Ron and Roxanna Patterson, cellist Doug Davis and bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann.

Brightening up town on Nichols Street...hanging the pieces which depict a century of commercial fishing on the island. Way to go, Annie!

It was fun to see the colorful pieces go up, one by one, yesterday in the sun on the side of Ace Hardware. Annie Adams has another masterpiece, and it’s great that Lynn Danaher & Ace gave her a place to hang it….here’s a little note I got from Lori Stokes this morning:

Ian, I hope you can get to Nichols Street really soon to see (and photograph!) the truly wonderful mural that Annie Howell-Adams painted, with the help of Lynn Danaher and Dave Moorhouse. Our little town doesn’t have nearly enough public art, and this mural will help to fill the gap. I was truly blown away when I walked by the mural this morning and could look carefully at how creatively Annie captured this important piece of island history.  – Lori

Wolverines power past South Whidbey soccer team 4-0

Posted September 9, 2010 at 4:58 am by

Freshman defender Emma Brand cuts off the passing lanes in the penalty area. A strong defense allowed few shots in the Wolverines' 4-0 victory.

Friday Harbor has usually had their hands full with South Whidbey, but in this year’s season opener things went FHHS’ way as they shutout the Falcons 4-0 Wednesday afternoon.

All smiles after the game - Hannah Starr contributed two scores in the victory over South Whidbey Wednesday.

Things looked pretty even in the first 20 minutes or so, as both teams probed for weaknesses, but senior midfielder Hannah Starr struck a bullet from 25 yards out to beat the Falcon keeper to the low right corner with 22 minutes gone. Starr struck again eleven minutes later from 30 yards outside the box, hitting the top left corner for a 2-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, sophomore forward Miranda McPadden and sophomore midfielder Teagan Serna added a couple to put the game out of reach, as junior goalkeeper Rhiana Franklin and her defense recorded the squad’s first shutout of the year

It’s still early in the season, but there appears to be a lot to like with this team. They were looking for each other, and showed patience as they made passes. Throughout the game, it seemed to me that the midfield tightened up defensively, which effectively kept the Falcolns out of the penalty area. The defense earned the shutout with tight, smart marking of the opposing forwards – all in all, it made for a fun night to watch Wolverine soccer.

The girls head to Port Townsend for their next game this Saturday.

Where DID “Elwha on the Rocks” go?

Posted September 9, 2010 at 12:27 am by

Keith Loree wrote & asked a good question:

What happened to your mp3 of Elwa On The Rocks? That’s one of my favorite songs of all time and I can’t find it anywhere else, and now it’s no longer available thru your site.

Well, thanks, Keith! I like it, too – it was posted back in 2007, and the song itself is here (click this link to hear the song.) Here’s the writeup that went with it, in case you missed it (from the Update at that time):

Meanwhile, I found this little mention about the Elwa’s occasionally sullied rep (although when she whacked into the Orcas dock & caused a six-week suspension of service & three-quarters of a million dollars in damage – well, sometimes you deserve what they say about ya). Anyway, on a site called evergreenfleet.com here’s a bit about the boat ….

Unfortunately it was in the Islands that the Elwha would began to develop an unsavory reputation. Perhaps the most famous incident for the vessel happened in 1983 when her captain “discovered” an uncharted rock in Grindstone Harbor while showing a female passenger what her home looked like from the water. The event, while hardly comic as it resulted in a tear in the Elwha’s hull did have some soap opera-like qualities to it.

Soon thereafter the woman in question began being referred to as “the Siren of the San Juans” and local bars began selling a drink called “Elwha on the Rocks.” A local band in Friday Harbor cut a 45 with a song of the same title.

Oliver’s passing…

Posted September 8, 2010 at 9:40 am by

Oliver

Just got this sad news from Leslie at the Animal Shelter:

Last night was a very sad day at the Friday Harbor Animal Shelter.  Oliver, a 22 year old tabby cat and longtime shelter resident, passed away due to age and progressing illness.

Oliver was well known by all who came to the shelter, as he frequently greeted visitors in the parking lot.  Oliver came to the shelter as a stray in August of 2005 and has been the shelter mascot and front office cat ever since.  He frequently sat in on monthly board meetings in his own chair enjoying good conversation and cheesy popcorn.

He even had his own commentary section in the shelter newsletter called ‘Oliver’s Corner’.  The shelter staff was with Oliver during his peaceful passing.  We will miss you, old friend.

Around the island….

Popeye has a new baby down in the Friday Harbor Marina...photo by Kevin Holmes (thanks, Kevin!)

Kind of a lot going on! Let’s check in:

• A killer whale died in San Diego’s Seaworld prison yesterday at the age of 12. Captured at the age of four months, it’s worth noting that killer whales can enjoy a near-century in the wild (Granny turns 100 next year). It’s time to let them go. Here’s the story.

Kayla (left), Khaili and Kerri are heading off to university later this month - the three have been working at Haley's this summer, which is why it's known as a friendly place. They're going to Western Washington, Central Washington, and Eastern Washington, in that order.

• At the Fair, Jim Ricks told me he was stepping down from his board position with Island Rec…if you’re interested in serving his unexpired term, check in with Sally Thomsen at 378-4953. And…thanks, Jim, for serving so long & so well.

Last year’s show was awesome, and this year’s is gonna be great – here’s more from Penelope Haskew:

Come out and audition for the San Juan Community Theatre’s Fall Family Show, Stars Lore: A Mythological Musical!
Monday, September 13 at 3:00 at the Elementary School.

Sing, laugh and have lots of fun in this musical that helps us travel through the stars to enchanting places like Ancient Rome, India and Slovakia!

Island playwright Penelope Haskew has gathered the songwriting help of island composers Teddy Deane, Ian Byington and Richard Hieronymus to tell us the story of Camp Estrella Bonita, where children tell us stories from around the world and throughout time about love, courage, generosity and patience.

Stars Lore: A Mythological Musical will be performed at the San Juan Community Theatre, Friday November 19 and Saturday November 20.

This is not Lisa's cat. I checked.

Lisa Schreiber was wondering if you’ve seen her cat in the past week or so:

Our super loving, big, orange tabby cat is missing.  He is very loving and will go into anybody’s house if you let him.  He is a little overweight (or he was) and will often drool when you pet him.

He lives on Sunday Drive and his name is Blocky, and we miss him very much. Please contact me with any information about him – 378-7548 – thank you!

• Just checked in with Wendy at Friday Harbor House about the new hours at The Bluff Restaurant:

We are open 7 days a week

Sunday through Thursday
Lunch – 11:00am – 2:00pm
Dinner – 4:30pm – 9:00pm

Friday and Saturday
11:00am – 10:00pm

That's our former library director Laura Tretter (in white) being welcomed at her new job at Bayfield Library in southwest Colorado - that's Board member Tim Telep, staff member Cathy Moats, and library patron Hallie Hallberg helping welcome Laura.

In a couple of weeks, this meeting will discuss some of the issues connected with the CAO – here’s more from Minnie:

What is Best Available Science and how can it affect your property?

Dr. Paul Adamus, the consultant  hired by San Juan County Council to determine the Best Available Science for the review of the Critical Area Ordinance will be the speaker at a public meeting to be held at the Grange in Friday Harbor on Sept. 21, 2010.

Using the example of buffer widths required by the State to protect wetlands, Dr. Adamus will explain the challenges in defining, locating, and using the best available science to inform land use regulations.

James Barkshire and the Fabulous Rhythmatics rocked the Port last Friday evening as the music program for the summer wrapped things up for the season on Sunday. Coordinator Chinmayo said it was one of the best received & best attended...wahoo!

If you have questions about how changes to the Critical Area Ordinance will affect your property you will want to hear what Dr. Adamus has to say.

He will describe how this was done in neighboring Island County and how he is assisting San Juan County with this task currently. This will be an opportunity to ask questions about the science behind identifying and protecting wetlands, and will be followed in future months by several County-sponsored public workshops.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 PM.  Coffee, tea and snacks will be served.
Seating is limited.  Please RSVP to 378-7040 or [email protected]

• There’s still room, according to Torrey:

Lighthouse Preschool has two openings for the two year old program an two openings for the four year old program.  Please call 378-4885 if interested.  You may also visit the website fridayharborpresbyterian.org to connect with the preschool link for more information.

It was fun to catch up with Adrienne and baby Atticus at the Fair at the Library's booth - Adrienne organizes the programming at the Library, and keeps everybody smiling. Personally, I liked "Eat Pray Love," by the way.

It’ll be an interesting discussion next Monday:

On Monday, September 13th, the League of Women Voters of San Juan County will be hosting a program devoted to a discussion of the Citizens United vs. FEC Supreme Court decision which was rendered in January of this year.

This is the decision in which the ban on corporate donations during the last days before an election was overturned.  There has been much public outcry over this decision.  You may be surprised at some of the players!  The meeting will be held at the Library conference room from 12:00n until 2:00pm.  The public is welcome.

I checked with Matt (he sells his salmon at Compost It!) to see how his supply was holding out – he reports:

Look for the sign next week...

Fresh silver (coho) salmon, and maybe a few kings (chinook) will be available at Compost It (65 Nichols Street in Friday Harbor) on Tuesday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They are caught by Matt the Fisherman, are cleaned and cared for aboard his boat, and brought back to San Juan Island for you.  They are $6.00 per pound.
THANKS!

• You’ve seen the garden across from the high school – well, here’s the scoop (and cool pictures) about it, from Slow Food Land & Sea.
