Johnny Moe

Johan Elias Moe (Johnny) passed away January 7, 2010 at the age of 81. He was born in Seattle, WA to Elias and Dagne Moe on January 29, 1928 and grew up in Mount Vernon and Stanwood, graduating from Twin City High School in Stanwood.

Johnny played football in high school but excelled in music, playing the coronet. He formed Johny Moe and His Orchestra in Snohomish and entertained in Washington for many years. He served in the US Marine Corps and the US Air Force both in France and Germany as well as in the US. In the 1960s he entertained in Friday Harbor and spent three years living here after 2000. Hey! Josh (who used to work at the Ale House till they closed) and Natalie (who works at Griffin Bay Bookstore) are getting married on Valentine's Day!

Hey! Josh (who used to work at the Ale House till they closed) and Natalie (who works at Griffin Bay Bookstore) are getting married on Valentine's Day!

What’s happening as we head into the weekend:

• He who hesitates is lost – Jan from the Community Theatre tells me: “All of the shows for Peter Pan this weekend are sold out!  People can come an hour before each show (6:30) or (1:00 on Sunday) and get on a waiting list to try and get in. Thanks for all your help!”

• At Kings Market, they have Joe Friday’s (you know, the shirt shop below Kings Marine) closed for the season. Don’t worry – they tell me the stock will be moved upstairs so you can still get Friday Harbor clothing as gifts for yourself or others!

Ron & Marie...

Ron & Marie...

• Ran into Marie & Ron DiCristina (right) at Costco yesterday, buying maple syrup. Keeping things sweet.

• Just heard Katie Leed is having a baby later this year – congrats, Katie!

• Reading with dogs…this is an awesome idea! The Animal Shelter is working with the Library to pair up therapy dogs (what dog isn’t a therapy dog?) to help relax kids when they’re reading…awesome idea. They’re calling it Island Tail Tutors. Here’s more about the kick-off.

Proud mom Mandy & Livia....

Proud mom Mandy & Livia....

• You remember Mandy Richardson, who starred for the FHHS soccer (she scored our last goal in 1997) and basketball teams in the 1990s…saw her & her beautiful baby Livia on the ferry last night.

San Juan Wireless announces that Denyse Davis was their Customer Appreciation Drawing Winner. Joy tells me Denyse received a Toshiba Blu-ray DVD player.

She & Denny wanted to say “Thanks!” all of their loyal customers for supporting San Juan Wireless for the island’s cell phone, satellite television, and wireless broadband services.

The true believers were there...

The true believers were there...

• It was fun to watch the Universities of Alabama & Texas in the championship game at Haley’s last night….but, far as I can figure, most folks watched the game at home.

Probably get a bigger crowd if the Huskies get back in it. (I graduated from Alabama, by the way, so I was there, since we don’t have a tv at home….)

More about meningitis…..

Posted January 8, 2010 at 4:34 pm by

Stan Matthews from the County says there’s a lot of interest in the death of an islander this week of meningitis – here’s more:

County Health Officials Following up on Meningitis Death: San Juan County Health Department is following up with relatives and others who may have come into contact with a 54-year-old Friday Harbor man who died of meningitis in his home on New Year’s Eve.

The victim, identified by the County Coroner as Mark Ambrose Trahan, had reportedly complained of earaches and headaches, but had not sought medical attention and had felt well enough to be active until at least two days before his death. Continue Reading

Mary Jane Leche

Mary Jane Leche

David Bentley of St. David’s Episcopal Church sent over this writeup about Mary Jane Leche, who passed away this week… she was married for 55 years to Father Leche, who was the long time Vicar of the Episcopal Mission here that became St. David’s Parish. The Requiem Eucharist will be at 2 pm on Saturday, January 9 at St. David’s.

Mary Jane Leche (June 13, 1929 – January 5, 2010), 80, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, died at her home in Friday Harbor, WA on January 5, 2010. She was born at home in Wickford, Rhode Island on June 13, 1929 to Basil K Major and Helen J (Cartmell) Major.

She graduated from North Kingstown High School in 1947 and then went on to graduate in 1950 from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York, NY. She worked as a head nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City and it was there she met Edward Leche, a young seminarian and her future husband of 55 years.

They married in St. Mary’s Church in Lakewood, WA on February 19, 1955, where they began their 35 years of active ministry serving congregations throughout western Washington.  In 1967 the family was assigned to the San Juan Islands Mission in northwest Washington State. There Mary Jane and Edward raised their family and made their home for over 43 years.  Affectionately known as “Little Rhodie” she will be remembered for her “Yankee Spirit”, her devotion to husband and family, and spontaneous fits of laughter.  She was a Christian woman who unselfishly embraced the role and ministry of priest’s wife with grace, generosity, and hospitality.

In later years....

It's fun to sit in on the sessions during Camp Week....

Dan Paulson just told me the Irish Music Camp is in its ninth year (wahoo!) and that this year the camp will set up at Roche Harbor from March 8-13th. Previously, the camp has convened at the Marine Labs (the dining hall is a great place to dance, with that nice old wood floor), but this year will take over the village at Roche Harbor.

Here’s more about the camp, which is awesome & world famous & way cool.

All you need is love….

Posted January 7, 2010 at 12:12 am by

The folks at Starbucks are doing an awareness-raising campaign for AIDS/HIV in Africa that involves folks from 156 countries singing the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.”

We need more, actually – a bunch of research, materials, medicine, and a much bigger chunk of political will – but love is a super place to start. See what you think – it’s pretty inspiring:

Sealth bites it, ferry service for Wednesday disrupted….

Posted January 6, 2010 at 1:24 am by

Just got this note (Tuesday evening) from WSF about the ferry schedule for tomorrow – read it & start planning:

On Tuesday, January 5th, the MV Sealth was taken out of service to assess mechanical damage. After troubleshooting, engineers have found damage to the engine output shaft, requiring the vessel to be out of service for an extended period of time.

For Wednesday, Jan. 6th, the 6:20 a.m. sailing from Anacortes to Lopez is canceled. A late 7:10 a.m. sailing from Lopez to Friday Harbor will be made by the Inter-island ferry. Also canceled is the 8:05 a.m. sailing from Friday Harbor to Anacortes, the 9:25 a.m. sailing from Anacortes to Lopez and the 10:20 a.m. sailing from Lopez to Anacortes.  The 11:20 a.m. sailing from Anacortes to Shaw and Orcas Island is also canceled as is the 12:20 p.m. sailing from Shaw and the 12:55 p.m. sailing from Orcas to Anacortes.

Updates will occur as an alternative service schedule is developed.

• It was January 6, 1930 when John Dustrude was born – Happy Birthday! Congratulations, John, & many happy returns!

• As you know, I supported the ban on styrofoam here in the County, and wahoo! The County has passed it! Here’s more from Stan Matthews at the County:

The San Juan County Council today adopted an Ordinance banning food service businesses from using Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene) containers for take-out or eat-in packaging. The ordinance mirrors an ordinance passed last year by the Town of Friday Harbor and will take effect on the same date: April 22, 2010 – which is Earth Day.

Supporters of the ban point out that polystyrene does not biodegrade in landfills and it can leach carcinogenic chemicals.

San Juan Island resident Doris Estabrooks, initially raised the issue publicly in 2004 and has worked steadily to enlist community support, persuade local businesses to move stop using Styrofoam containers, as well as urging both the Town and County Councils to enact the ban.

The state's count of homeless folks is later this month....

Stan Matthews from the County tells me there were 73 folks identified last year, and the number is expected to rise….here’s more from Stan:

Homeless Count Scheduled for January 28

San Juan County Health & Community Services will participate in the state’s annual Point in Time Count of Homeless Persons (PIT) on Thursday, January 28th. Prior to that date it will contact and enlist the cooperation of local agencies and organizations that come in contact with homeless members of the community.

The annual count was mandated by a state law passed in 2005 which seeks to reduce homelessness in the state by 50% by the year 2015.

The first survey in San Juan County, performed in 2007, identified 28 people as homeless, but last year’s PIT count totaled 73, and it is expected that number will be larger this year due to the difficult local and national economic situation.

Last year’s survey found that a significant number of San Juan County’s homeless were families with young children and teenagers; Continue Reading

You probably heard about it – Matthew Gray Palmer’s sculpture of an elephant was leaving the island, so I went down & shot a photo of it. Wow! He did an awesome job! Look closely & you’ll see the individual butterflies in the design… the driver said the pachyderm is gonna end up in Virginia…
