Phonathon's next week, but you can donate now!

Posted October 14, 2009 at 1:17 pm by

Look – I’ll make this easy for ya. Just go to the Schools Foundation webpage (it’s here: http://www.sjpsf.org/) and look on the left side at that button that says “Donate Now!” Click it, then check your home budget & see how much you can spare.

Or wait till next week when the Phone-A-Thon folks call. And this year, there’s a chance to double your donation – here’s the scoop:

The San Juan Public Schools Foundation will hold its annual Phone-A-Thon on Monday, October 19 from 5:00 to 8:00pm. During this time, volunteers will be calling Island families to invite them to contribute towards the Foundation goal of over $50,000 to be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Kings Market and Friday Harbor Marketplace’s corporation, Valmark. This total of $100,000 will be used for textbooks and equipment. Continue Reading

Midfielder Alex MacDonald (3 in white) runs down the ball for FHHS....

• The Wolverine volleyball team made visiting Shoreline Christian sit up & notice last night in one of the more exciting games of the season, losing 3-0 but with each game a close one: 29-27, 25-23, 25-22.

Co-captain Jenny Gustafson says the spirit of the team is high. “We’ve had a lot of changes – a couple of girls left the team, a couple are sick, one’s hurt – but we hold together. We’re scrappy, and we love the game.” She and co-captains Kayla Short & Ali Wade work to keep things positive and fun at practice, and she hopes that will pay off at Orcas on Thursday. “We took them to five games last time, early in the season. We’re playing better now – it’ll be fun to see how it goes. We’re pretty hopeful.”

• Meanwhile, the FHHS soccer team started slowly with North Sound Christian, but turned a 0-0 halftime score into a 4-0 victory, which didn’t include a couple that were called back. The 8-3 Wolverines return to action Thursday at Orcas in a game that will help make the season for whichever of the interisland rivals that wins. The girls are definitely on a roll, and are fun to watch.

Larissa Nash controls the ball to stop the North Sound Christian attack...the Wolverines beat NSC 4-0 last night at FHHS.

The Calendar, in action....

The Calendar, in action....

What’s going on around Town and on the island:

• The San Juan Island Community Events Calendar just added a new part… this should really help event planners as they figure out where to hold their show:

The link from the community calendar listing alternate meeting spaces is officially live: http://www.sanjuancalendar.com/planners.php. You can also get to this by clicking the ‘for planners’ button on the main page of the calendar.

As you will see this is an alphabetical listing of spaces for meetings that the public can use. Information included is venue name and location, capacity, charges, and contact. We’ve already referred folks to this listing and they say it’s pretty useful! And…if you know of any place else we ought to add, just drop me a line at ian (at) byd2.com.

Here’s more about that, from Derek Sivers. You’ll be glad you read his remarks.

And…if you’re setting up a program to do your e-mail blasts, be sure and check out Constant Contact – you’ll love it. (It’s what I use….)

Open sewing….

Posted October 13, 2009 at 12:01 am by

When Kay Kohler told me she & the kids have “open sewing” going on at the high school tech building each Tuesday from 3-4:30pm, I wondered what the deal was – she says anyone is welcome to drop in: they have 8 new Babylock sewing machines from a Gates Grant, so they do mending and practical sewing, as well as prom dresses and pillow cases!

Questions? Drop Kay a line at mermaidk (at) interisland.net.

Married last summer….

Holly & Ryan

My good friend Nancy Raichlen and I were visiting about how nicely her daughter Holly’s wedding had gone last summer, and we agreed it would be nice to tell you a little about it. It was, of course, during the summer in August (Holly’s a teacher) – here’s the scoop:

Holly Raichlen and Ryan Wehner were married August 8, 2009 at the home of the bride’s parents in Friday Harbor.  Parents of the bride are Steve and Nancy Raichlen.  Parents of the groom are Jack Wehner and the late Jody Wehner of Fairbanks, Alaska.  Maid of Honor was Kristy Raichlen of Friday Harbor and Best Man was Scott Wehner of Fairbanks, Alaska.  After a honeymoon in Maui Hawaii the couple are making their home in Kirkland.

The Safety Fair was great!

Presley Clark was one of several hundred kids who liked the Safety Fair.

Fire Marshal Bob Low and the fire department’s Carolyn Hudson both told me the Safety Fair was the biggest & best yet…and they weren’t the only ones. Every mom & dad I got a chance to talk to said it was awesome, with all the activities & presentations, as well as the positive way that safety was stressed & modeled (like the phone, where kids could practice calling 911 with someone on the other end)…all without scaring & spooking the kids.

Good food, good weather, and a good show – way to go!

Jill Hopkins & Larry Greene come to watch Wolverine #1 singles player Zack Milkus with coach Dick Barnes (right) on Saturday at FHHS.

Let’s catch up  a bit here:

• The football guys had an easy time a week ago with Seattle Lutheran, winning 56-0, then traveled to Lynden Christian last Friday for a draw at 20-20, which was settled in overtime when they made a field goal for the 23-20 win. The Lyncs come here on the 30th for a re-match…should be a good one. In the meantime, this week our Wolverines travel to Nooksack Valley for a rematch with the Pioneers this Friday, then have Meridian visit for Homecoming on the 23rd.

Senior Trevor Youngquist plays hard at the net during Saturday's match.

• The FHHS soccer girls (7-3) got back on the winning track at Concrete last Thursday, knocking off the Lions 3-0. They play North Sound Christian here tomorrow (Tuesday), and have won 7 of their last eight, with six to go.

• Tennis had a good time on Saturday, playing in the sun with Coupeville here. This weekend’s matches and this week’s will help determine seeding & placement in the district tourney, coming up soon – I’ll get you the word on who’s in & who’s promising a little later this week.

• Volleyball is back in action Tuesday night, when Shoreline Christian comes to visit.

• It was a busy weekend for the Tigers (football) and the youth soccer squads, all over the place…it’s cool to see so much activity in our little community, with all the football teams (three of ’em) and soccer squads (over 200 kids play). The football guys have the playoffs coming up at the end of the month, while the older soccer teams end in either early November or early December, depending on the team.

San Juan's U-14 girls (in red) lost to the visiting Mt. Baker squad Saturday, but played hard even in the last minutes of the game.

Rebecca, in the sun on Saturday....

Rebecca, in the sun on Saturday....

On Saturday I ran into Rebecca Barnard & asked her how her new job – selling her invention, Limba Slim & related products – is going. She says it’s going great, and there’s this chance to participate – but you gotta sign up this week, ’cause it starts Friday. Here’s more:

Free Weight Loss, Fitness Motivation and Smoking Cessation Trials on San Juan Island
Limba Systems, LLC, of Friday Harbor, will be conducting a 6-week trial of a series of motivational systems based on the new science of olfactory hypnosis. Olfactory hypnosis, invented by hypnotherapist Rebecca Barnard of Friday Harbor, combines hypnosis with aromatherapy. By sniffing a new fragrance while listening to a 10-minute hypnosis CD for weight loss, fitness or quitting smoking, the listener establishes a brand new olfactory memory of the hypnosis that can be activated again anytime by taking another quick sniff of the same fragrance.

The phenomenon of olfactory memory is scientifically proved and commonly experienced as a profound feeling of nostalgia triggered by a whiff of a familiar fragrance. Olfactory memory is centered in the brain’s limbic system – the same part of the brain responsible for memory, emotion and addictions. After listening to the hypnosis CD for 21 days, the listener will find herself automatically making health-conscious decisions, without even thinking. As Rebecca says, “It’s like willpower, only easier.”

The Limba Systems trial is absolutely free, for the sole purposes of gathering testimonials and before and after photos. Each participant will receive a LimbaSlim, LimbaFit or LimbaQuit System and group support in a fun weekly meeting, led by Rebecca Barnard. Participants must commit themselves for six weeks beginning the week of October 12 (on Friday, the 16th), attend weekly meetings and be willing to have their photograph taken. If you are interested in losing weight, getting motivated to exercise or quitting smoking and would like to participate in this study, please call Rebecca at 378 6355 or visit LimbaSlim.com/TRIAL.
