A familiar sight on the west side...Granny at the end of a breach...

Most researchers around here agree (after looking at photos from the 1910s) that Granny was born in 1911, which puts her at 98 years old this year – and still flying high. The picture above was shot by Jim Maya this weekend….

Yesterday afternoon at Fairweather Park...

Days like yesterday make it feel like a great idea – the Music in the Park at Fairweather Park at the Port overlooking the marina is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon – the music continues this month each Friday (5-7pm) and Sunday (2-4pm)…plan on dropping by! Here’s more.

She gives all….

Carol, giving...

Carol, giving...

One of the most giving people on the island is Carol Capps…seems like you see her everywhere, including giving blood last week (the blood drive was in the air-conditioned Mullis Center rather than its usual spot in the Grange, which was maybe 180 degrees), or dressed up for the 1910’s in the Soroptimist part of last month’s parade on the Fourth (that’s her to the left, in pink – it was warm THAT day, too!)

Thanks for everything you do!

Most of you know I don’t watch tv (except during the World Cup), so I don’t know much (or care much) about the Big Switch that I understand is afoot…so a friend of mine sent me this easy-to-understand graphic so I’d get it.

For many of us, water simply flows from a faucet, and we think little about it beyond this point of contact. We have lost a sense of respect for the wild river, for the complex workings of a wetland, for the intricate web of life that water supports.

At a wedding out at Roche Harbor's Lady of Good Voyage Chapel...You know, I've been to a lot of weddings on the island (I sing & dj at 'em), and I've seen Archie Brooks at more than a few, and I always enjoy the way he conducts a ceremony.

Hey, when you drop by Wells Fargo & notice Carolyn’s away – here’s why: she’s having knee surgery this Tuesday (like, tomorrow, calander fan) and is gonna be laid up for a while.

Good luck! It’ll be good to see your smiling face when you’re back!

Swimming lessons….

Posted July 31, 2009 at 11:04 am by

Hey, it’s not too late to get into the pool! (Ya live on an island, rookie – gotta be able to swim!) Here’s the word from head swim instructor Amy Wynn at San Juan Fitness:

Ian, thanks for your help in spreading the word on this one.  For what it costs for a movie and snacks a kid can have a great swim lesson and some extra lifeguard swim time to practice what they’ve learned–and the special is for adults, too.  So no excuses for not learning how to swim.  People should get in on this soon because private lessons go back up to $25 a half hour after Sept. 1.

Now through the end of August, half-hour private swim lesson at San Juan Island Fitness are just $20—a five dollar savings off our regular lesson price.  Admission to the pool and an hour or more of  lifeguard swim on that day is included in the price.  Want to save some money and double the fun?  Take your lesson with a friend of similar ability.  Two can share a semi-private1/2 hour lesson for $20 total.  What a deal!

Art on display…

Beth from the Library says now you have a chance to look at the library’s art:

Art from the permanent collection on display in library

The San Juan Island Library currently is exhibiting a portion of its permanent art collection, donated by various island artists. The name of the exhibit is San Juan Summertime. The art committee is looking for new members to help set up art exhibitions throughout the year. Persons interested in volunteering should call Diane Martindale at 370-5814.

The library will again start exhibits throughout the year. The schedule and themes of each exhibit will be announced in August.  Input from artists as to what might shows might be of interest will be considered in planning the schedule.
