Moving up & over to Anacortes…

Eli & Ann out on the town...

Eli & Ann out on the town...

It was good to run into Ann Larsen & Eli Bailey the other night at Haley’s….Ann tells me she’s switched jobs lately – she has been serving as County Council clerk, but has lately agreed to look after Kevin Ranker’s Anacortes office now that he’s state senator for Skagit, San Juan, and a chunk of Whatcom County (here’s the map). She gets to commute to Anacortes each day from here, so she’s getting a lot of reading done.

Meanwhile, Ingrid Gabriel has filled her spot at the County…we sure have good people working for us.

If you're not adverse to verse...

Tonight at the Naked Bean, Billy will be hosting an open-mike Poetry Reading starting at 7pm…I’ve already heard from several poets around here who are dropping by, so it should be a nice evening.

Ian sings for you....

Ian sings for you....

Bring your latest poems by to share, or come to listen. See you there!

Then, Saturday night, I’ll be singing from 7-10pm – come on by! It would be great see you!

So, you need a cat….

Josiah has his hands full...

Josiah has his hands full...

Po Powell tells me she remembers when she was a child on San Juan in the summers, “we would sit in front of Kings Market with a box full of kittens and they would all be gone by the end of the day.” Now she & Josiah are wondering if you’d like to help them find good homes for these sweeties…a home like yours, perhaps.

Call 472-1538 and they’ll tell you more.

Cell phones & cars…

Both hands on the wheel...

Both hands on the wheel...

I thought it was a good idea when the state passed that law saying you can’t talk on the phone while you’re driving.

The other day I was on the mainland coming up I-5 when I noticed the car in front of me had a decided weave to it…since it was going kinda slow, I decided to pass her. When I did, I looked over to notice the woman who was driving was texting & driving.

Guess we got another law to pass.

John Simon wrote to tell me:

After living on San Juan Island for over 5 years, I finally landed a salmon…thanks to Jim Lawson of Puget Sound Anglers!

Can’t miss it now…that’s a nice new wooden sign Michael Horn has in front of his office on Spring Street, across from Spring Street International School & Harbour at the Village.

Music on the Lawn went great…

Dancing the night (and the rain) away.....

Dancing the night (and the rain) away.....

It was fun to drop by the Music on the Lawn at the Historical Museum on Wednesday & see all the folks dancing….here’s more from Recreation Director Sally Thomsen at Island Rec:

Hi, Ian!

Despite the dreary weather over 150 people attended Island Rec’s Music on the Lawn free concert last night. The crowded enjoyed the music of the Jim Basnight Band and the enthusiastic dancing of a group of students visiting the island from Centralia College Upward Bound program.

We are expecting a clear, warm evening next Wednesday along with more dancing to the sounds of the 9-piece swing jazz band, Easy Street.

I hope to see you there!

Sally

You already know that Mike Vouri is doing his final performance at General Pickett this weekend (a few tickets remain – call now at the Community Theatre), but there’s more – here’s more from Oren at the Front Street Ale House for Saturday night:

10% discount Friday evening for The Life & Times of General George E. Pickett Show ticket holders.

Front Street Ale House, the official home of Battery D Foundation, is offering a 10% discount Friday evening to everyone attending the final island performance. Stop by for dinner before the show, or join us after the show for an informal celebration with Mike Vouri at the pub.

On tap Friday will be a special brew of Pickett’s Special Ale, an Ale House original, first tapped May 22nd, 1993. The Front Street Ale House is a sponsor of Battery D Foundation, a local 501c-3 sponsor of living history programs at San Juan Island National Historical Park. Battery D organizes and underwrites the Elliott Bay Pipe Band’s appearance each spring at the Memorial Day Parade in Friday Harbor, as well as the Memorial observances at Roche Harbor each year.

Battery D’s next big appearance will be in conjunction with all the Island and visiting re-enactors celebrating the 150th anniversary of the commencement of the Pig War at the park’s Encampment Friday & Saturday July 25th & 26th. Battery D’s 1850s mountain howitzer will sound the answering salutary rounds to the arrival of the Lady Washington & the Hawaiian Chieftain, as they visit Garrison Bay to help celebrate the weekend.
