Perham Black is heading to Florida for sailboat racing – Contributed photo

Perham “Per” Black, a senior at Spring Street International School in Friday Harbor is one of 18 youth sailors headed to Florida to compete in the Cressy Cup Laser Radial Division.

This competition is considered the United States high school national championships for singlehanded sailing of Laser Radial sailboats.

Per Black earned his place to compete in the nationals in a regional competition held at Seattle’s Shilshole Marina September 23rd and 24th racing against the best high school sailors from around the Northwest.

At the Shilshole Marina races Per joined his fellow competitors who were greeted by a light southerly on Saturday morning. This proved to be quite stable and peaked around 8 knots by noon. The breeze then began to fade, and by 3pm it had shut off completely. The wind never really materialized Sunday, and only one race was completed in very light winds. Per and Owen Timms, of Olympia, consistently finished ahead of the pack, and ended first and second, with Owen recording 12 points, and Per 14. Continue Reading

Fall Farm Parade – SJ Update file photo

San Juan Island Grange is pleased to announce the 8th annual Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade on Saturday October 7th. The parade will stage from 1:30 to 2:30 at the Fairgrounds, and start onto Argyle Avenue at 2:30, heading down Spring Street and turning onto First Street to go to the Grange Hall. This year’s theme is “A Community of Growers”, referring to our local Grange’s slogan, “a community of growers since 1931”. Parade participation is open to all. We welcome farm trucks, wheelbarrows, tractors, horses, other livestock on leads, marchers with signs, and groups with banners.

The Grange Hall will be open after the parade, with a ribbon-cutting for our new deck “with the million-dollar view” occurring at 4:30. Participants are invited to stay for a farm-to-Grange dinner starting at 5:00, with main dishes provided by local farms and side dishes brought potluck by island residents.

September EMT of the Month

EMT of the month, Robin DelaZerda – Contributed photo

We would like to congratulate Robin DelaZerda for receiving the honor of EMT of the month. If one thing can be said about Robin, it is that she stays busy. Along with being a mom, Robin is a full time 911 dispatcher, volunteer EMT, and volunteer EMT Association Treasurer.

Robin’s kids are the most important thing in her life. She has a Friday Harbor High School Senior at home to keep track of as well as a couple of dogs and a recently rescued King snake named Houdini for his “great escapes”.

If there is any time left in the day or week, Robin likes to decompress with a run. Thank you for your dedication and service Robin!

Mrs. Bave Presents the Pig War

Posted October 3, 2017 at 5:42 am by

Coming to San Juan Island, One night only! Saturday, October 7th

The almost true story of a play that nearly happened about a war that never occurred, as told by the mannequins who were there!

The intersection of two true stories: the inspirational story of the battle between the United States and Britain over the San Juan Islands and the wacky story of Emelia Bave who, for twenty years, presented a play about the Pig War on San Juan Island using a cast of mannequins, because no one on San Juan Island wanted to be in her play!

Zylstra Lake Update

Upper Zylstra Lake – Andrew O’Neill photo

From the San Juan Preservation Trust, here’s an update on the Zylstra Lake purchase…

Legislative Impasse Puts Major Funding Source in Limbo

When the state legislature adjourned in July without passing a Capital Construction Budget, all funding for the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) was put on hold—including a grant that would have allowed the San Juan Preservation Trust-San Juan County Land Bank partnership to complete its $3 million acquisition of Zylstra Lake Preserve on San Juan Island.

Now that this funding source is on indefinite hold, where does that leave the project?

A Successful First Annual Bike n Brew

The Fairgrounds Crew for Friday Harbor Bike n Brew – Marie DiCristina photo

A letter of thanks from the Lions Club…

Dear Editor,

Thanks to all who made possible the first annual Lions Club Friday Harbor Bike-n-Brew. Many Lions Club and individual volunteers, generous sponsors, enthusiastic bicyclists, and locals made this fund-raising event a ‘roaring’ success!

Early-rising cyclists began at the Fairgrounds eating a hearty breakfast served up by the Cutthroat Pirates. Following a safety briefing, the participants, escorted through town by SJC deputies, took to the road via three pre-planned scenic routes. There were cheerful volunteer-supported food stops along the routes and thanks to Meat Machine Bicycles, roving volunteer mechanics to help with any problems. Continue Reading

Letter in Support of Anna Lisa Lindstrum

Posted October 2, 2017 at 5:47 am by

Dear Editor,

Ballots will be coming out this month. I urge you to consider voting for Anna Lisa Lindstrum for the public hospital district board. Her views on the important district issues — quality local health care at affordable rates, support of the hospital and our local EMS service, community involvement in decisions regarding the future of the local convalescent center, plus strong support of women’s health care issues — all add up to a very positive addition to an important local board. Please join me in supporting Anna Lisa Lindstrum.

Pet of the Week

Peanut is this week’s Pet of the Week – Contributed photo

Today I will live in the moment. I will embrace truth and beauty. I will contemplate the meaning of life. I will make sure my chakras are aligned and be one with the universe. For about five minutes.

Then I’m gonna run around Kamp Kitty, chase my tail, climb the chain link fence, pounce on the other cats while they’re sleeping and knock the water bowl over. It’s going to be hectic, but I’ve got a plan.

My name is Peanut and I’d love to help you occupy your days… You should come to the animal shelter to meet me. I’ll pencil you in.

Silver Swan Ballet Classes

Posted October 2, 2017 at 5:42 am by

Jeanne Peihl at Salish Sea Ballet in Friday Harbor will be delivering Silver Swans Ballet Classes. Silver Swans is a pilot project delivered by the Royal Academy of Dance, featuring branded ballet classes created specifically for people over 55 and taught exclusively by Silver Swans Licensees. Specially designed for mature dancers, classes help improve mobility, posture, coordination and energy levels and, most importantly, impart the sense of wellbeing that dance brings.

Jeanne Peihl is a Silver Swans Licensee – meaning she has undertaken the training delivered by the Royal Academy of Dance in the US. There are just over 100 Silver Swans Licensees taking part in this pilot project, who trained either in the UK or the US. The training focuses on how to safely adapt ballet techniques for older adults and deliver a high quality ballet class for learners aged 55 and over, equipping teachers to recognize and respond to the different needs of participants of a broad age range.

Jeanne’s Silver Swans classes are every Friday 12:30 to 1:30 and you can find out more about Salish Sea Ballet here: http://www.salishseaballet.com/about/

Nancy Spaulding is 001SJ!

Nancy’s license plate design

The Terrestrial Managers Group and the Madrona Institute are thrilled to announce the winner of the San Juan Islands Specialty License Plate Design Contest: Nancy Spaulding! A local artist, Ms. Spaulding’s entry, “Evening Passage”, garnered the most votes out of the 47 entries. And as the winning artist, Nancy will be treated to the ownership of the 001 San Juan Islands license plate, but we also thank all the talented local artists who submitted designs – the competition was fierce!

When will the plate be available to purchase? Once the required 3,500 signatures of Washington state residents are received, Senator Ranker will submit the license plate bill to the legislature. The campaign is about half way there, with 1,700 signatures on file, so be sure to keep a look out for signature sheets at local upcoming events, like October’s Green Home Tours and Fall Farm Tours, or even more convenient – sign online today at madrona.org.

The San Juan Islands Specialty License Plate will generate grant funds for the conservation and stewardship of natural, agricultural, historic and cultural resources in the San Juan Islands. For more information contact Tanja Williamson at 360-378-4402 or email [email protected].
