Concientious Projector

Posted October 7, 2017 at 10:41 am by

Rob Simpson is back with a new installment of the Conscientious Projector Series. Here he is with the scoop…

Extraterrestrial Contact > The Evidence

This Monday, 7:00 PM (Oct. 9th) in the library Conference Room, Conscientious Projector invites you to discuss a forbidden topic.

Have we had contact with extraterrestrial civilizations?

Mainstream media makes the subject a mockery. Our own government says, “No… No… NO. No contact”; Declassified documents from our own government say ” Yes…..Yes……YES. Lots of it. “

Let’s stop the merry-go-round.

Come examine the government documents (available through the Freedom of Information Act).

Dr. Stephen Greer’s research over the last 30-years is the subject of a new film… UNACKNOWLEDGED.

We’re going to watch it. And then we’re going to talk about it.

Because, if extraterrestrial contact is true, ……well, THAT would be… like the most important thing in… like, ever….dude.

(That was just in case a millennial reads this. Wish more would show up.)

For sure, I don’t want to miss out on world-changing history in the making.

Shakeout In The San Juan Islands

It’s just two weeks until the 2017 Great Washington Shakeout drill on October 19th. You can join the growing number of islanders who are preparing for “the big one” by signing up for the Shakeout Drill.

So far, nearly 1100 people in the islands are involved. This includes two school districts, a day care, county government, local businesses, and household participants.

It’s quick and easy to sign up at: http://shakeout.org/washington
.

When you register you’ll receive Shakeout news and preparedness info, and be counted among those making preparations.

The recent hurricanes across the South and the Caribbean have provided plenty of examples of the consequences of natural disasters – imagine if the San Juan Islands are subjected to the same isolation from supplies that Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands are currently suffering?

You can help prepare your family and community by participating in the Great Washington Shakeout drill.

If you have questions or would like help getting started, contact the DEM office at, 370-0587, or email [email protected].

Park Announces Visitor Center Fall and Winter Hours

Posted October 6, 2017 at 5:41 am by

San Juan Island National Historical Park announces its change of visitor center hours of operation for the fall and winter seasons. On Saturday, September 30th, 2017 fall hours went into effect. During the fall season:

  • English Camp Visitor Center will be closed until the summer of 2018.
  • American Camp Visitor Center will be open from 8:30am – 4:30 pm, Wednesday through Sunday and closed on Monday and Tuesday.
  • All grounds including trails, beaches, and day-use facilities will remain open to the public from dawn until 11:00pm.

Fall hours will be in effect through December 10, 2017. On Monday, December 11, 2017 winter hours will be implemented. The American Camp Visitor Center will be closed for the winter season and will re-open in the spring on March 7, 2018 under the same operating hours as the fall.

The change in hours for visitor center operations reflects the current and forecasted financial landscape for the park. These decisions will allow staff to be most effective in allocating resources to reach the greatest amount of park visitors throughout the year. Due to historically sharp decline to few visitors in the winter months, the park finds it most sensible to focus staff availability to periods of higher visitation. The staff is resolved in providing sound stewardship of the finances it is given and in serving the public.

BLM Advisory Committee to meet in Friday Harbor

Posted October 5, 2017 at 8:45 am by

The Bureau of Land Management today announced it will hold a meeting of the San Juan Islands National Monument Advisory Committee, demonstrating that partnerships and inclusion are vital to managing sustainable, working public lands. The public is welcome to attend the meeting which will occur on Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Friday Harbor Grange, 152 First St., Friday Harbor, Wash., from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Planned agenda items at the meeting include the potential impacts of the Monument Resource Management Plan’s alternatives to recreation, to vegetation communities, to cultural resources and to wildlife. Potential impacts to socio-economics, tribal interests and lands with wilderness characteristics will also be discussed.

“The San Juan Islands National Monument Advisory Committee is an important forum for the community conversation that is a key component of public land management,” said Linda Clark, BLM Spokane District Manager. “By having the public participating in that conversation, we ensure the advice we get reflects a variety of perspectives on land and resource use issues.” Continue Reading

Angel or Witch?

Posted October 4, 2017 at 5:54 am by

It’s time for the October edition of the SJ Historical Society’s History Column…

That’s no angel, it’s a witch.

Each month the Historical Museum shares a photograph that has some kind of tie-in with that particular month. It could be an event, a person, a community milestone, or a holiday.

This month’s photograph of Middleton’s Market, formerly on Spring Street where Kings Market is today, was nearly passed by when it was first viewed as a small snapshot. At first glance, the 1940s/1950s decorations in the front windows appeared to have a Christmas theme. The flying figure on the right looked like an angel with a halo. But thanks to the modern technology of digitization, one could see when zooming in on the image that it was no angel. It was a witch, flying in front of a full harvest moon. And this photograph is suddenly seen as a great choice for the October column.

What else do we see in the photo? There’s a Skagit Maid Ice Cream sign. Now we want ice cream and Halloween candy. What we can’t see is what’s next door, further down the street. We know that Kings Market was there at the same time and would eventually take over the whole block many years after Middleton’s Market closed in 1957 and Blair King bought the building. But before that side of the block would become all King owned businesses, there would be (at various times) Roberts Furniture Annex, The Mode, Malloy’s Hardware, and others.

Some islanders will remember Vivian and Alfred Middleton, not only for their market but also for starting the Fribor Theatre, now known as the Palace, back in 1915. The Middletons were not only entrepreneurs, but also involved and generous community members for decades. Their stamp on island social life continues not only with the movie theater, but also Harrison House B&B. Its corner building was once the Middleton home.
