Third Saturday Contradance

Posted October 17, 2017 at 5:48 am by

Please join us at the Grange Hall in Friday Harbor for the monthly Saturday contra dance, Saturday October 21st. from 7:00 til 9:00. Our caller will be Judy Zeidel, from Bellingham, and the band will be JP and the OK Rhythm Boys, from Orcas Island.

As always with contra, every dance is taught by the caller, and you do not need to bring a partner, we all take turns partnering each other, one of the friendly features of contra dance. No need to have contra dance experience either, since our caller will be sure you know what to do every step of the way.

Contra dancing is traditional folk dance form which originated in New England, bringing its style from the British Isles. The music has roots in the Celtic countries, and as much in common with music from our southern states. Live music is always a feature of contra dancing and brings an extra element of enjoyment.

This is an opportunity to mix and socialize with friends and family and have a good old time!
Suggested donation of $10, $5 students.

Schools Foundation Phone-A-Thon

In the SJ Update mailbag today, it’s Barbara Bevens writing to urge you to donate to the Public Schools Foundation…

Please give generously when the Public Schools Foundation calls you. Every penny counts toward books, supplies and classroom items that aren’t normally covered by school district funds. As you all know money is tight since the Legislature did not fully fund public education. We are facing a tight school year.

I’ve decided to do something to help. I’ve had lots of people ask me how my campaign for School Board Director is going. I attended both of the League of Women Voters Forums, but I hadn’t really decided what to do otherwise. I researched how much yard signs and digital and prints ads would cost. It made me crazy!

So, my solution is to give it to the kids! I’m donating to the Public Schools Foundation the amount I could have spent on campaign ads and signs.

That’s my campaign! It’s ALL about the kids.

Please DONATE, then VOTE.

Thank you!

Summer is this week’s Pet of the Week – Contributed photo

YOU try being five months old and keeping the schedule I keep. You’d be exhausted too!

Being a kitten is hard work and here at the animal shelter there is so much to do. My schedule is jam-packed with playing, sleeping, eating, playing, cuddling, knocking things off the desk onto the floor, looking for fish in the toilet bowl, playing, chasing my tail, climbing on things, playing, and – trying to get adopted!

My name is Summer and if you need someone to help keep YOU busy, I just might be the girl for you! Stop by the animal shelter soon to meet me!

Healthy eating webinar: Make mealtimes a piece of cake

Do you have little ones in your family who are finicky eaters? Do mealtimes often turn into battles that begin with kiddos taking negotiated bites, and end with parents holding up a white flag and surrendering in complete exhaustion?

If this scenario sounds all-too familiar, help is on the way.

Two of PeaceHealth’s experienced nutrition experts hope to take some of the stress and frustration out of planning meals and packing lunches and snacks by empowering adults with tips and strategies that can be used to persuade youngsters — from toddlers to teens — to eat healthier.

The Sciences to a Peaceful Mind

Posted October 14, 2017 at 5:48 am by

Rob Simpson invites you to the next Conscientious Projector series…

Isn’t it about time we focused on some good news?

This coming Monday, Oct. 16, 7:00 PM, Library Side Door, at our October Conscientious Festival, we will begin exploring pathways to a quiet mind from
the view point of the latest scientific research.

Sages through the ages have told us a quiet mind expands our intuitive capability. Intuition has always been our best guide. And we need it now more than ever. All the great scientists testify… intuitions provide their biggest breakthroughs.

These days with the world going crazy… a quiet mind is a rare thing. And that’s why we’re going to look into it.

These are not woo-woo speculations. This series is based completely on peer-reviewed research. But, it will seem new to us. Most of our scientific education is decades old. We will be pulling research together from many fields of study, so it will be a real film festival of consciousness. Gregg Braden calls this series MISSING LINKS, for the way it pulls information together with one focus.

Join us next Monday, 7:00 PM for our first installment. Isn’t about time we heard some good news?

She is a trained CNA having worked in the health care field, she has volunteered on other local boards, and she is the general manager of an island business so understands the budgeting processes. Anna Lisa is running for the seat vacated by Barbara Sharp.

Anna Lisa is committed to working with Peace Island Medical Center for the delivery of quality health care. In conjunction with Peace Health, she is a supporter of, as well as has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood, to deliver important women’s health care, birth control, family planning, etc. at sliding scale rates. She is an advocate for the continuation of our outstanding EMS services on the island, knowing how important these life saving services are to our community. As well, Anna Lisa has become involved with the situation at Life Care Center. She understands the need for this facility in our community.

Please join me in supporting Anna Lisa for commissioner of the San Juan County Public Hospital District #1, she has the best interests of the entire community in mind regarding the “overall health of our community”.

Preliminary County Budget Published

Posted October 13, 2017 at 7:05 pm by

2018 Preliminary Budget for San Juan County Published

The 2018 Preliminary Budget for San Juan County has been published. With a theme of “Budgeting for Uncertain Times,” the 2018 budget has been the most challenging to compile in years. Revenues are projected to be flat, while expenditures continue to increase. Uncertainties at the federal, state and local level impede planning efforts and challenge reliance on conventional budgeting methods.

In addition to budget detail, the Budget Book includes a complete picture of the purpose and mission of San Juan County. The Overview section includes the Budget Message, as well as general information about the County. Sections organized by function (Legislative & Administrative, Financial Services, Community Services, Law & Justice, and Public Works) follow. Within those sections, each department describes its individual missions, accomplishments of 2017, and goals for 2018. Finally, the Department Requests section includes detailed descriptions of every request for new or increased funding.

The Preliminary Budget is compiled by the Budget Team following budget review meetings with all departments. The Budget Team is comprised of County Auditor Milene Henley, County Manager Mike Thomas, Chief Deputy Auditor Kim Herrenkohl, and Health and Community Services Director Mark Tompkins. The budget now goes to County Council for review, amendment, and eventual adoption.

The Budget can be viewed at:
