“It takes 15 million barrels of oil per year to make all of the plastic water bottles in America, according to the Container Recycling Institute. Sending those bottles by air and truck uses even more fossil fuel. Meanwhile, it takes 1,000 years for plastic bottles to break down.”

The prom was great….
Posted April 26, 2009 at 9:09 pm by Ian Byington
Nothing but good… FHHS principal Fred Woods told me late Saturday night that this year’s prom was a delightful, mellow affair with as many as 150 kids coming for a good time.
You probably saw the kids out on the town (like Cody Price and Megan Cuomo, who had dinner at Vinny’s) all dressed up with somewhere to go…the event at the Friday Harbor Yacht Club brought the students together with flowers, done-up hair, pretty dresses, and a lot of smiles.
Here he is….Mr. San Juan!

I checked in about how the Mr. San Juan contest at the Roche Harbor Pavillion went, and there are four things to report: John Sable (photo, at Rocky Bay Sunday, with the sceptre you get for being king) won the coveted title; the fundrasier made some $8600 for the Friday Harbor PTA (which means: for the kids); and that everyone had a great time in the event emceed by Boo Boo. Way to go!
Flowers get delivered in time…

You thought YOU had a busy Saturday… Julie & Lisa at San Juan Florist were up till midnight the night before, getting corsages & lapel flowers (how DO you spell boot-en-neer, anyway?) ready for the annual Fridy Harbor High prom on Saturday night. I love the little touches they put in each arrangement… and they deserve a break, as well as a pat on the back for a job well done.
Sports update….

Saturday was a beautiful sunny day to get out & see our kids at work – besides the kids’ baseball & teeball games at the elementary school, four varsity sports were on-island – tennis, soccer, baseball, and softball.
The softball girls put together two ten-run shortened games as they blew past the Darrington Loggers 10-0 and 22-2. That’s Kerri Goff pitching (photo) as all the girls did well at the plate. The Logger boys fared similarly with the FHHS baseball team, as they lost two ten-runners as well.
Meanwhile, the FHHS soccer team lost 7-0 to visiting Lynden Christian; they reload for their last home game on Thursday this week with Cavalero Mid-High at 4:30.
Dragons pull off last minute win, 9-8, pick off Lynnwood

Saturday’s lacrosse game had a fourth quarter worth waiting for, as the San Juan Dragons allowed three goals to lose a one-point lead, only to score three of their own for the one-point win. It was an insprired comeback, the kind that champions pull off. Way to go! (That’s Forrest Dayton at right.)

Welcome, Rider!

There were, of course, TWO signs at King’s Market – Katie & Logan Luft brought Rider into the world on the 18th…another new islander!
Welcome, Henry!

It was great to hear about Libby (Howard) Oswald’s new boy, the way we hear about things on the island sometimes – with a sign in the window at King’s. (Henry John was born on the 21st).
Congrats!
This is Dollars for Scholars week…eat out!
Posted April 26, 2009 at 8:13 pm by Ian Byington
Deb Nolan tells me – we gotta eat out! Here’s the deal – when you eat out at the places below, FHHS students get a chance at scholarship money to help get that first year of college off to a good start.
The last couple of years, kids have received $1K scholarships, if they do 80 hours or more of community volunteering. This is a program that rocks! Good for the community, good for kids, good for you (if you’re hungry.) Here’s more:

New owners at IPS

Ran into Jim and Kate Schuman the other day on the ferry, and they allowed as how they’ve gone & bought Island Petroleum Services (IPS) from Lynn & Charlie Meyer. Saw Jim yesterday tending to things at the Port’s marina fuel dock, and that reminded me. They took over the operation on April first. -oo-

Keep your eye on the…tent
Posted April 26, 2009 at 7:16 pm by Ian Byington
A modern parable. Or metaphor. Or story…about the way we do things, sometimes.
The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.
Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, “Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see? ”
The Lone Ranger replies, “I see millions of stars.”
“What that tell you?” asked Tonto.
The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, “Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.
“Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning.
“Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.
“Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.
“What’s it tell you, Tonto?”
“You dumber than buffalo shit. It means someone stole the tent.”
Kinda like Wrigley Field…
Posted April 26, 2009 at 3:19 am by Ian Byington
In Chicago, they schedule Cubs games at Wrigley in the middle of the day for two reasons: One, that’s when baseball is supposed to be played, and two, then people can skip work & go watch ’em.
Today, you can too – the Friday Harbor Wolverines baseball team plays at 2:45pm here against Orcas at Hartman Field, while the softball girls take on the Viking girls at the elementary school at the same time. Unlike Wrigley, our game times were set because of the ferry schedule, but like Wrigley, it’s a nice reason to see our kids do what they do well. Play ball!
