Quick notes: The baseball express rolled on, as the boys thumped Granite Falls Friday night 9-0 before sweeping two at Orcas on Saturday.

The softball girls lost their doubleheader at Orcas Saturday, while the soccer boys nearly jumped Washington High in Tacoma Friday night, riding Conor Lanphere’s goal to a 1-1 tie till the hosts scored twice in the final seven minutes to end the Wolverine upset bid.

New stewardship fund set up, this past weekend….

Posted April 19, 2009 at 10:42 pm by

The good folks at the Community Foundation have good news for the continued greening of the island – here’s more:

The San Juan Island Community Foundation (SJICF) has established a new fund to promote local non-profit and public organizations and their projects that foster the education and practice of community stewardship of our environmental resources.

The Environmental Stewardship Fund is a membership fund open to all San Juan residents and organizations and will, through a collective review and voting process, advise the SJICF board on how to prioritize grant requests.

“The San Juans are a unique island community, offering unmatched opportunities and challenges to restore, protect and preserve our natural environment and to thoughtfully consider the impact of the use of our precious resources,” said Charles Anderson, Foundation chair.  “This fund allows members to support the growing number of environmental stewardship programs through a combination of giving and decision making.”

The fund has, within weeks of its founding, raised and funded its first project: the Sustainable San Juans Earth Day Celebration which took place this past weekend, on Saturday (see: www.stewardshipsjc.org).

There are no fees applied to the Fund, 100% of every donation will go to support local projects.

The Community Foundation serves as a non-profit philanthropic umbrella organization helping donors, non-profits and public organizations to achieve their goals through direct grants, organizational assistance and philanthropic resource management. The work of the SJICF is supported through individuals’ direct contributions to the SJICF Operations Fund.

If you would like to join with others in supporting Environmental Stewardship in our community or support the general work of the Foundation, please call Susan Matthews, SJICF Program Coordinator, 378-1001.

Orbison show online this morning….

Posted April 19, 2009 at 10:22 pm by

Since Pat O’Day used to set up dances with Roy Orbison’s band back in the 1960s (with a group called the Wailers, featuring a guy named Kent Morrill), it was only natural he’d set up Sunday night’s show.

Last night’s show in the Community Theatre is already online…an outfit called Tour TV Online filmed the two shows featuring Kent Morrill’s Tribute to Roy Orbison, and you can get a taste of the show (which was great, by the way!) by clicking here: look for the Seattle Channel, then click on “on demand” under the main picture for a list of shows, including this one. See what you think!

And thanks to Pat O’Day for helping bring this national tour-level show to our island!

Poisoned waters…keeping yourself informed….

The equivalent of an Exxon Valdez dumped off our cars into Puget Sound from traffic every couple of years…does that get your attention?

I got a note from the People For Puget Sound about a don’t-miss show on tv tonight…here’s more:

Please take the time tomorrow night at 9 PM to watch the KCTS-9 special Frontline telecast of “Poisoned Waters,” a two-hour examination of the threats facing our Puget Sound and Chesapeake Bay.

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Hedrick Smith interviews Kathy Fletcher and many others in examining the rising hazards to human health and the ecosystem and the difficulty of keeping our waters clean.

According to Smith, “I could not have imagined that there was the equivalent of an Exxon Valdez dumped off our cars into Puget Sound from traffic every couple of years. (Runoff from roads and parking lots funnels at least 6.3 million gallons of petroleum into the Sound every year.) I knew something about dead zones (areas like southern Hood Canal, where marine waters starved of dissolved oxygen essentially suffocate fish and plants). I didn’t know dead zones occupy 40 percent of the main stem of Chesapeake Bay every summer in hot weather, that dead zones are doubling every 10 years in the world, that there’s a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico the size of the state of Massachusetts.” [Seattle Times, 4/20/09]

“Poisoned Waters” underscores the urgency of the work in education, advocacy and restoration People For Puget Sound does on behalf of its supporters and the critters of the Sound. Thanks to your support, People For Puget Sound gets solid results in making the Sound safer and healthier.

Our children deserve clean water. Please watch “Poisoned Waters” and join our campaign to Save Our Sound with a donation to support our education, advocacy and restoration programs.

New gas station…at Roche!

The new station at Roche Harbor....

The new station at Roche Harbor....

There’s a new little place to get some gas at Roche Harbor…it’s located at the top of the parking lot way in back of the hotel (like, up the hill) – you’ll see it when you first come to the resort.I saw it last week, but wasn’t sure it was open…it is.

Far as I know, it’s the first public place to get gas on that end of the island, besides the fuel dock, which is kinda hard to drive your car to…

Thanks to Chris Watling for the tip!

The Community Foundation begins its grant cycle…time to apply!

Posted April 16, 2009 at 11:01 pm by

I love what our Community Foundation does for our island…take a peek at their website (it’s here: http://www.sjicf.org) and you’ll get the idea (I love their website, by the way…it makes understanding what they do really easy.)

Well, it’s time for the annual request for grants – here’s the info from SJICF’s Susan Matthews:

The San Juan Island Community Foundation is accepting applications for the 2009 grant cycle.

The Community Foundation supports Island nonprofits working in the areas of Arts & Culture, Basic Needs, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness, and Community.

Grants are awarded through a competitive process that strives to address the broad needs of our community. Projects that provide partnership opportunities among more than one organization or that leverage new resources or have long-term impact are of particular interest. Recipients will be notified in early September and grants will be awarded at the annual Breakfast of Champions event held at the end of September.

Grant application forms can be downloaded from the San Juan Island Community Foundation website, www.sjicf.org. Additional information about the process and procedures can also be found on the website.

Completed applications must be postmarked or received no later than June 15, 2009. The mailing address is San Juan Island Community Foundation, ATTN: Grants Committee, PO Box 1352, Friday Harbor, WA 98250. The office is located in the Technology Center, 640 Mullis St., Suite 104, Phone 378-1001.

The Community Foundation serves as a non-profit philanthropic umbrella organization helping donors, non-profits and public organizations to achieve their goals through direct grants, organizational assistance and philanthropic resource management.

Restorative yoga…ahhhhh….

Stephanie works with Adam in the restorative class....

One of the great things about Stephanie Hubber’s yoga place at Shantaya Yoga (next to the airport, above Ravenhill Construction) is all the different kinds of yoga classes you can take, offered by different instructors. That’s Stephanie getting Adam Saccio ready for the next pose in Restorative Yoga, which the Shantaya website describes like this:

Restorative Yoga: A supported, conscious body/mind relaxation practice, usually deeply supported by blankets, blocks, or other props and are held for several minutes at a time with effects that have the ability to leave us nourished and well rested. When supported with props, the body relaxes and opens, releasing tension and stored-up toxins that can cause illness. Restorative poses offer benefits to both the body and mind, for conditions ranging from insomnia to asthma to chronic pain to migraines to depression.

Check out what Shantaya has to offer on their website at http://shantayayogacenter.com. You’ll like what you see. Beginner? A great place to start!

One of my favorite photographers on the island showed off his photos from his trip to Antarctica at the Whale Museum last month. The crowd that night for Bob Stavers included folks that got turned away for lack of room – it was packed.

In the spirit of showing them & you what you missed, and also simply showing off some awesome pictures, I asked Bob if I could post his online gallery. So click here to see what his camera caught down there, in the cold.

Whimsey, on the run

Whimsey, on the run

One of the cool things about reading the Update is helping your neighbors…remember about three years ago when Francesca’s dog was missing, we posted it on the Update, and found that he had swam to Brown Island?

Is this important news? Sure – to the folks missing their pet. So here’s a cat you might see tomcattin’ around Town:

Whimsey is a 7-year old neutered male cat, long-haired, white with caramel markings, ear tattoo TT313N, approx. 12 lbs. He’s been missing since Monday evening, April 13, 2009 from 28 Apple Tree Lane, near Cedar Street, off Argyle just past the Fairgrounds in Friday Harbor. Please check your shed & garage.

If you see him, please call Josie at 298-1054 or 378-3597. Thank you!!
