Friday Harbor High School Students named World Champs at the 2019 International Space Settlement Design Competition World Finals

Last weekend, the Friday Harbor Aerospace Design Team, also known as Island Orbital Technologies (IOTech), became World Champions, at the 2019 International Space Settlement Design Competition World Finals. IOTech, alongside assigned teammates from four other schools that created one 60-person aerospace corporation, won this year’s world finals of the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC) at the Kennedy Space Center, Center for Space Education.

This year’s world finals of the ISSDC asked the Friday Harbor team to combine ranks with four other schools in order to create one 60-person aerospace corporation dubbed “Rockdonnell”. This corporation included teams from India, Uruguay, Canada and the US.

The competition was a 42-hour design challenge. Beginning at 2pm on Saturday, teams received the RFP from the competition, which asked teams to propose the future construction, operations and maintenance for a settlement of 16,000 on the far side of the lunar surface. The ISSDC slated this scenario to take place in the year 2053, so part of this design competition is predictive, but based on current and projected developments. Continue Reading

We support Elizabeth (Liz) Lovelett for State Senate. We are impressed with Sen. Lovelett’s accomplishments in her first legislative session. We especially appreciate the bills she sponsored that improve services across state agencies for children, youth, and families; and improved boater education requirements regarding Southern Resident orcas.

Sen. Lovelett is the best candidate to enact the just transitions needed — from today’s dependence on fossil fuel based industries to a future based on renewable energies and carbon reductions that include family-wage jobs.

Finally, Sen. Lovelett’s experience on the Anacortes City Council gives her a local government perspective that’s needed in Olympia.

Please join us in voting for Sen. Liz Lovelett.

Isle (not) be Jammin’

Kirk takes down the signs on the front of his store – SJ Update photo

Kirk Fuhrmeister has closed the doors to Isle Be Jammin’ for the last time. After having liquidation sales a couple weekends in a row, the few remaining items went to Cecil’s Electronics and Kirk cleared out the store.

Originally called Mellowoods & Music, it first opened on Nichols Street in 1991 in the building where Funk ‘n Junk is now. After about 10 years at that location, Kirk changed the name to ” Isle Be Jammin’ ” and moved to Argyle Avenue, next door to Radio Shack (now Cecil’s) and was there for about 7 years, then over to Spring Street next door to Christy’s Island Hair Salon. And he was there for about 7 years, and then finally to the space shown in the photo above at Surina Business Park where he’s been for about the last 4 years.

Kirk will still do musical services out of his home. He repairs wood instruments and he teaches students how to play Guitar, Mandolin, Ukelele, Bass, Trumpet and Harmonica. If you’re interested, give him a call at 378-5151.

2019 International Space Settlement Design Competition World Finals

The Friday Harbor Aerospace Design Team, also known as Island Orbital Technologies (IOTech), has just completed their 42 hour design challenge and is now preparing for their design brief, scheduled for 10:50 am. This year’s world finals of the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC) asked the Friday Harbor team to combine ranks with four other schools in order to create one 60-person aerospace corporation. Dubbed “Rockdonnell”, this corporation included teams from India, Uruguay, Canada and the US.

On Saturday morning, Rockdonnell elected a number of Friday Harbor students to leadership positions. Notably, Arlo Harold (’20) was elected to be Vice President of Engineering, Joely Loucks (’19) was elected the head of Automations Design, Brandon Payne (’19) was elected head of Operations and Lucy Urbach (’19) took the post of Systems Engineer.

The Whale

Posted July 29, 2019 at 5:50 am by

The Orca Survey Outreach & Education Center at 185 S. First Street is doing our Monday Movie Night again on July 29th. Doors open at 6:30 and the film will start at 7:00. We are doing a very special screening of “The Whale” – the touching story of a little orca named L98 Luna.

When Luna became separated from the rest of his L Pod family, he ended up alone in Nootka Sound on the west side of Vancouver Island.

This film beautifully tells the story of this special little whale, the friendships he shared with the people of Nootka Sound, and the controversy that surrounded his presence.

We are very excited to announce that the filmmakers Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit will be attending this event and a Q&A will be held after the film. Please join us!

Free admission and snacks will be provided. Doors open at 6:30pm and the film will begin at 7:00pm.
Seating is limited.

Pick of the Litter

Posted July 29, 2019 at 5:47 am by

SJCT’s Summer Film Series continues this Tuesday with this Dogumentary…

Pick of the Litter
Not Rated (but OK for everyone)
“Dogumentary“ 81 minutes

Pick of the Litter follows a litter of puppies from the moment they’re born and begin their quest to become guide dogs for the blind. Cameras follow these pups through an intense two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm.

Along the way, these remarkable animals rely on a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, life-changing things in the service of their human. The stakes are high and not every dog can make the cut. Only the best of the best. The pick of the litter.

This family friendly film is recommended for dog lovers of all ages as well as those interested in how guide dogs are trained.  After all, who doesn’t like adorable puppies and kind hearted people?  Teenagers and younger children will love this story.

Please remember that no admission will be charged again this year but we do ask that you consider making a donation to the Theatre in appreciation for sponsoring these films.  Also note that $2 bottomless popcorn will be available, this year with a variety of exciting new toppings.

Fiddler on the Roof Jr.

San Juan Community Theatre and Theatre Arts for Kids present Fiddler on the Roof Jr.!

The young “campers” at SJCT’s Musical Theatre Camp this year get to bring a beloved story to the stage. The three-week day camp for experienced young actors culminates in four performances of Fiddler on the Roof JR.

This special adaptation of the nine-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Fiddler on the Roof JR. follows Tevye the milkman as he tries to protect his daughters and his way of life from a changing world. Created by Broadway legends Jerome Robbins, Harold Prince, Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein, Fiddler on the Roof JR. tackles the universal theme of tradition in ways that reach across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion.

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to marry off his daughters and instill in them a sense of tradition in the face of growing anti-Semitism in Czarist Russia.

Update on Mi Casita

Carol Ford from Mi Casita writes to share this update on the quest for a kitchen vent hood that has forced the unfortunate temporary closure of the restaurant. Luckily, there’s light at the end of the tunnel…

The range hood is scheduled to arrive in Bellingham Monday sometime! Gregg is not taking any chances so he will be in Bellingham waiting to pick up the precious cargo and bring it home himself.

Jim will install it Tuesday morning (Yay for Jim’s Heating!)

If all goes according to plan, Mi Casita will be open for business at 4:00 on Tuesday!

“A Republic, if You Can Keep It”

Posted July 29, 2019 at 5:43 am by

Insights from David M. Kennedy, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University

Join the San Juan County Democrats for an evening with David M. Kennedy, Donald J. McLachlan Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, to be held from 5:30-7:00 pm on August 8, 2019 at the San Juan Island Grange (152 First Street North, Friday Harbor, WA 98250). Q&A to follow presentation.

The title of Professor Kennedy’s presentation recalls one of Benjamin Franklin’s most famous quotes. At the end of the Constitutional Convention, he was asked what type of government had been adopted. Franklin responded: “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

More than two centuries later, Franklin’s warning about the fragility of the American experiment is more compelling than ever. In a wide-ranging discussion, Professor Kennedy, long-time San Juan Island summer resident, will explore the complicated historical dynamics that have brought the Republic to its present pass. APSFH Sends Gratitude For Support

Posted July 25, 2019 at 5:47 am by

The Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor sends warm thanks to Bella, the granddaughter of APS-FH supporter and animal lover Daryl Grazia, for her hard-earned June gift.

Bella, while visiting San Juan Island for a couple weeks this summer engaged in entrepreneurial activity; opening a lemonade stand to raise funds for the APS-FH. Following her first week of operations, Bella and her grandmother brought into the shelter a donation of $30 in lemonade stand proceeds, followed the second week with her grandmother Daryl returning to deliver an additional donation from Bella of $20.

Bella, who had already returned home, left a lasting impression on us at APS-FH for her impressive entrepreneurial spirit and generosity to the homeless animals at the shelter while visiting Friday Harbor. The lemon obviously doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to Bella and her grandmother Daryl.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of shelter pets!
