Open House and Grand Opening

Posted April 23, 2019 at 5:46 am by

Please spread the word! Rex and Lisa Guard owners of The Web Suites and Heather Munro owner of ALTAR Movement Studio located at 80 Web Street are inviting you to a day of celebration and community connection.

Date and Time: Friday April 26th from 10 am to 3 pm, The Web Suites, Open House and then from 5pm to 8pm, ALTAR Movement Studio’s Grand Opening Party.

In July 2013 the Guard’s building caught fire and the damage was too extensive to make repairs. The next five years would be an incredible journey of learning and planning. In July of 2018 Rex & Lisa were finally ready to begin rebuilding. In collaboration with so many local talented craftsmen, what seemed to take so long is now finished and fully operational. We have 3 vacation rentals on the 2nd floor and commercial space on the main floor.

ALTAR Movement Studio is located on the ground floor of 80 Web Street. We are a community dedicated, exploratory movement environment weaving together functional movement, yoga, meditation and mindfulness. ALTAR was born out of a desire to create a sacred practice space where ALL bodies are welcome and where we explore the ideas and practices that contribute to WHOLE SELF HEALTH.

Please come help us celebrate, enter drawings, purchase discounted class passes and private sessions and join us in giving back to the community through your participation. For every raffle entry received, Rex and Lisa will make a donation to the Family Resource Center.

OPALCO Apprentices at the 2019 Annual Meeting aboard the Tilikum – L-R: Ken Bair-Lopez, Kyle Hofmann-Orcas and Rio Black-San Juan Island – Contributed photo

OPALCO has hired three new linemen apprentices – one for each of the crews on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Island. These local linemen will keep the lights on for the next generation of islanders!

“With some of our linecrew hitting the 25-, 30- and even 40-year mark in their careers with the Co-op, we have to plan for future,” says General Manager, Foster Hildreth. “These guys are the key to the work we do at OPALCO.”

Becoming a Journeyman Lineworker is no small task. The apprenticeship is a structured four-year program that includes bi-monthly trips to the mainland, testing every six months, after-hour studying and boot-camp style training courses at a specialized camp in Oregon. Journeymen Lineworkers must be prepared to work outside in all weather conditions, keep themselves safe in a high-voltage environment and make the commitment to stay focused on this intensive program over four years, while working. Living in the Future’s Past

Can looking at evolution help us predict the future of humanity?” – Jeff Bridges

Friday Harbor Film Festival invites you to a free screening of the award winning documentary, Living in the Future’s Past narrated by Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges on Friday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm at Brickworks.

In this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking, Academy Award winner, Jeff Bridges shares the screen with scientists, profound thinkers and a dazzling array of Earth’s living creatures to revel eye-opening concepts about ourselves and our past, providing fresh insights into our subconscious motivations and their unintended consequences.

Living in the Future’s Past shows how no one can predict how major changes emerge from the spontaneous actions of the many. How energy takes many forms as it moves through and animates everything. How, as we come to understand our true connection to all there is, we will need to redefine our expectations, not as what we will lose, but what we might gain by preparing for something different “What kind of future would you like to see?” Continue Reading

WSDOT Active Transportation Plan Survey

Posted April 21, 2019 at 10:25 am by

Washington State Active Transportation Plan Survey Now Online

The Washington State Active Transportation Plan update needs you to connect people with the process. Tell your friends and neighbors, share links in social media, forward this notice to your contacts.

The public opinion survey is now available online in English, with other languages to be added as we have it translated.

What you’ll find on the ATP information page:

  • Survey in English and other languages as translations are complete: Take this by June 30.
    • If you want to share this with people as a print version you can create a PDF copy at the link. Mail completed surveys to: Active Transportation Division c/o Jan Spaar, WSDOT, 401 2nd Ave., Seattle WA 98104
  • ATP E-News subscription link: Occasional emails about what’s happening in the planning process
  • WSDOT Walk and Roll subscription link: 2-3 emails/month on topics related to active transportation in Washington state including grants, trainings, technical information, local/regional news round-up in addition to Active Transportation Plan news
  • Link to request electronic materials or ask if a speaker can come to your event

Why your input matters:

  • Because decisions about how our streets and roads can work well for everyone start with your involvement.
  • Because nothing gets funded, designed, and built without being in some plan, somewhere. (This means you need to get involved in your local and regional plans, too—we start with those.)
  • Because our state plan shapes how we work with our partners in the towns and regions where you live and move around every day.
  • Because good connections for people walking and rolling make the system work better for everyone, including people who drive.

Shareable text for social media (a quick copy/paste into Facebook and/or Twitter and you’re helping the plan):

If you live and move around in WA state take the survey for the State Active Transportation Plan. In English http://bit.ly/WSDOT-ATP2019-Engl; other languages will be linked at http://bit.ly/WSDOT-2019-ATP and you can sign up for ATP news there. #WSDOTactive #WAtranspo

Thanks for activating your connections.

2019 Airport Honor Wall Ceremony

Posted April 18, 2019 at 11:56 am by

Dennis Willows mentoring youngest grandson Sam, age 8

The Port of Friday Harbor and the San Juan Pilots Association are pleased to recognize our 2019 aviation honoree. This joint effort features a different pilot every year.

The Honor Wall at the Port of Friday Harbor Airport commemorates the history of aviation in the San Juan Islands since the early post World War II years when Roy Franklin first established scheduled air service linking San Juan Island with the mainland.

The selection committee this year has chosen Arthur “Dennis” Willows, recognizing his long service to our Friday Harbor aviation community. In addition to his serving as Director of the University of Washington’s marine laboratory, Dennis has been a tireless ambassador for general aviation in the San Juan Islands. He has inspired and mentored many aviation enthusiasts, taught high school students how to build an airplane, championed STEM education at our schools, and supported scholarship programs for aspiring young aerospace professionals.

Please join us at the Friday Harbor Airport Terminal Building on Saturday April 27th at 2:00 PM for the presentation ceremony and light refreshments.

The Field Project

Posted April 18, 2019 at 5:49 am by

Spring Street International School Presents:

The Field Project
Directed by Krista Strutz

The Field Project consists of a play and a comedy sketch: The Wolves and Who’s on First?

The Wolves, by Sarah Delappe: Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girls indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals.

Who’s on First? is a comedy routine made famous by Abbott and Costello. The premise of the sketch is that Abbott is identifying the players on a baseball team for Costello, but their names and nicknames can be interpreted as non-responsive answers to Costello’s questions. For example, the first baseman is named “Who”; thus, the utterance “Who’s on first” is ambiguous between the question (“Which person is the first baseman?”) and the answer (“The name of the first baseman is ‘Who’ “).
